That’s an interesting take on our most prolific offense in 35 years.

It’s the lack of a true cold blooded lead guard that really kills the offense at the end of games when the other team ratchets up the defensive pressure and the half court O stalls out. We saw that on display last night.

Purdue can be a really good defensive team, and having Edey takes away a lot of what Shannon normally does at the end of games.

And again, we got some good looks and just missed them. They made theirs. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm only referring to our seemingly common end of game woes, obviously the rest of the game the offense is working just fine.  And true about Shannon's driving is negated by any good shot blocker but you could have him drive and dump off to the guy behind edey for an easy 2

We can run iso and be more active doing it.
We can also run iso and be less active doing it. The less active is, imo, less productive and it's more of a beat your man 1 on 1.
Be active and toss some nice passes like PU did. It was nice watching their 2nd half offense.

I’m not really sure why he was so passive in this game but have seen some comments about a left wrist issue floating around out there. But yeah the lack of a true lead guard—Brad’s offseason failure whether he wants to admit it or not—has come back to haunt us many times this season.

At the same time, for perspective, we were preseason borderline top 25 and Purdue has spent the entire season ranked 1-3.

We have a lot of good pieces and have had good success in conference but it is arguably weaker than normal BT.

    L at Penn State (90-89): 0 FG in the final 2:30. Penn State ended the game on a 20-7 run, erasing a 12-point lead in the final 8:00.
    W at Maryland (85-80): 0 FG in the final 1:53. Illinois blew a 7-point lead and let Maryland tie the game twice.
    L at Michigan State (88-80): 1 FG in the final 7:38. Michigan State ended the game on a 24-8 run, turning an 8-point Illinois lead into an 8-point Illinois loss.
    W vs. Nebraska (87-84 OT): 0 FG in the final 3:29 (of regulation). Timeout heard around the world. Underwood calls a timeout to “set the defense.” Nebraska closes regulation on an 11-1 run to force OT. Marcus Domask made one free throw after Nebraska “fouled” him with under five seconds left.
    L at Northwestern (96-91 OT): 1 FG in the final 3:29. Domask missed a 10-footer to win the game at the buzzer. Could not stop anyone in OT.
    W vs.Michigan State (71-68): 1 FG for the final 5:29. No Terrence Shannon, Jr. for this game. Illinois gutted out a win.
    Loss at Purdue (83-78): 0 FG in the final 3:06. Fake rally comes up short.

Total damage: 27:44 of game action - four total field goals made.

Add the 5 points and one field goal in 3:25 in the PU loss. (I made error- we were up 66-64 with 3:25 left).

So total of five (5) field goals in 31:09.

Agree with all the comments. It is coaching, and it is a lack of roster construction.

They need to find a simple approach that gets us points at end of games.
