Iowa has revenge and a tourney spot for added motivation. And they're at home. Expect them to bring everything they got.

If we can pull out a W and kill any tourney hopes for Iowa, man that would just be the sweetest fucking thing.

Yep still a lot on the line in this game. If I had my druthers we win this one, put a dagger through Iowa’s heart, then lose early in the BTT in a meaningless game for our seeding.

I fear we’ll lose to Iowa and need a deep run in the BTT to be firmly on the 4 seed line; lose early; then get matched up against Auburn in the 4/5 game. If we beat Akron in the first round.

Iowa has a week off and is playing pretty well and their season is on the line.

Just a frustrating game. 

We had a 10 point lead in the first half and lord know it should have been more if not for the bonehead turnovers.   The lack of 2nd half adjustments was glaring.  Shannon lost his defensive intensity after his 2nd foul and from that point on Smith took over and Purdue dominated us.   Combine that with Harmon choking down the stretch with mistake after mistake all along with Ty Rogers watching from the bench while we get destroyed on the glass in the last 6 minutes. 

The Defense is still garbage.  I liked the first half or so of the Purdue game but then no adjustments in the 2nd half and we watch them shoot wide open 3 after wide open three.   Even Smiths last dagger wasn't all that sick of a shot.  Dude telegraphed what he was going to do and still had easy separation to get it off.  We looked tired at the end of the game. 

Looking at all the top 25 teams now I just don't see many teams we can beat or would be favored against, hell we are 0-4 right now.  With Purdue, Tennessee, and Marquette being the only ranked teams we played, which kind correlates to why are offensive numbers are so high, we play shit ass teams.

If we get stuck with 4/5 seed we won't get out of the first weekend, but losing to Iowa and a 1 and done the BTT we will likely be a 6seed , but at the expense of a 3 game skid.

I really used to hate Iowa too. But I know people that went there, and I've visited the campus, and I didn't think it would happen but my hatred for that place diminished greatly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Hawkeye fan, and they can pretty much fuck off, but I don't hold the animosity for the place like I used to.

I was actually in a bar in Iowa City when Steve Alford was coaching. During the Pierre Pierce bullshit. I was chatting with the bartender, told him I was an Illinois guy, and just point blank asked him what he thought about Steve. Again, this was during the time the shit was trying to be covered up. He told me he hated him and needed to be gone, and most people felt the same way. He gave me a few free beers that night, and I made a friend.

So there's that...We need to go in there and fuck them up. Period

The teams we did beat eventually fell out of top 25 and the ones we didn’t beat are top 5-6 teams. We still haven’t lost a game by double figures this year. It’s not like we’ve played 10 games against top 25 teams this year. It’s a weird year in that regard.

Purdue scored less than 80 against us so I don’t think defense wasn’t the issue. Long scoring droughts and going 0-fer from three in the second half killed us. They got some open threes off of broken plays and good bounces and knocked them down.

Harmon had one in crunch time that he took with no one within 10’ of him and missed it. Domask had one from top of the key wide tf open and barely drew iron. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Purdue is one of the best 3 teams in the country, have been all year, with a freak of an NPOY that makes them really tough to play, and we’ve given them all they wanted twice. A healthy Marquette or Tennessee are teams capable of winning it all.

So yeah we have played several elite teams really close but haven’t gotten a W. That doesn’t indicate to me that Illinois can’t beat a 4 or 5 seed that would be a clear step down from those other teams we’ve lost to. It indicates to me that we are a clear notch below that level of team and would need a heroic effort and some good bounces to get past one in the tourney.

We were up 65-64 with 3:25 left.
It was 13-6 from that point on.      (EDIT:  66-64 with 3:25 left and we were then outscored 13-5).

Not sure what the answer is to close out games, but we are still searching for answers and rotations at end of games.
Not having a true lead guard has limited Illinois not only this year but for the last 20 years.
Only real point guard since Dwill was McCamey.

I really wish they would just run high pick and rolls with Shannon and Hawkins setting picks and rolling or popping out at end of shot clocks.

We have 3 top tier D1 scorers and can't figure out how to get a bucket at the end of games?  That's on the coaching.  They need to step it up and stop running this NBA iso garbage.  It does NOT WORK in college.
