Thought this article was super fair - anybody who looked at the game today and thought Fields was the ONLY problem on offense is just as full of shit as the people who want Fields to be immune from all criticism. He wasn't the only problem, and I never said or implied he was (you treat me like I'm saying that, though). The running game wasn't good, the playcalling was bad - no doubt. There was a reason I mentioned the playcalling first, and in more forceful terms, when I listed the 'reasons' for the loss today.
But among the very biggest problems with the offense, as your article seems to acknowledge (but you never do) is that
Fields was mediocre. Again. This is the third week in a row you've had to try to put lipstick on a pig in the passing game, and a big thing I wanted to see this year given the potential to pick a top QB was to see him be better than that as a passer
consistently. Given that he's basically played anywhere close to the level I'd like to see from him consistently only a few times all year - and frankly, not for a few weeks now - it's going to be hard for him to pass that 'consistency test'. I thought this week was a great test re: Fields, to play against a talented defense that actually hasn't been playing all that well the last few weeks. But here I am again, with you explaining to me Fields played poorly because of other people.
The Tonyan drop sucked today. That's a tough one. They happen to everyone sometimes, but that's a tough one. It's an opportunity Fields took advantage of, but that was lost through someone else's poor play. But he also had at least two balls today that looked like easy picks and were missed. He fumbled twice. He made the Jameis Winston "just launch it in the air while you're wrapped up" play that drives me so crazy at least once. Those were mistakes of Fields' that weren't taken advantage of, that were lost through someone else's poor play.
I'm not okay with as you say "expecting perfection" from the receivers (i.e., 'what are his numbers and the score like with an 80 yard TD added?') while not also "expecting perfection" from the defense you're hyping up so much (i.e. 'what are his numbers and the score like with at least one pick six and another INT with a long return?'). Either add both hypotheticals, or neither.
