The Deuce / Re: wtf is wrong with the right?

Apparently the President immediately offered assistance to Ohio, but Governor DeWine declined. DeWine later changed his mind, and the Feds were sent to East Palestine.

Republicans are whining that the White House did not act sooner.

Trump is saying they acted because he plans to visit.

Apparently a large percentage of residents rely on public assistance. This disaster happened just as pandemic aid expired, resulting in a large reduction in food assistance. Meanwhile, Republicans are pushing for more cuts.

But, what about missing balloons?

I hope Norfolk Southern is sued to the moon and back.  Likely won't happen but one can hope.  I read tonight that the idiot CEO is offering everyone in that zip code $1,000 which I guarantee is tied to a promise to not sue upon acceptance.  Slimy fucks.

Both sides of the political aisle have really let down both rail workers and the citizens of East Palestine and the surrounding area.  Basically because 99% of the political spectrum is tied directly to the economy and not what's best for people in general.  That fucking idiot Dewine getting up there and talking about how safe the water is - ok dickhead go ahead and get a nice big pitcher from a tap and drink it.  The other entirely messed up thing is that like 70 percent of the citizens of that town are at or below the poverty level and these assholes are telling them to go buy bunches of bottled water when half the families there probably have trouble keeping a roof over their head in normal times.

Fetterman? Stoke guy? Over Lamb? Ok.... We will see how that goes.

And Warnock in a battle with Abortion Guy, but it is GA. The rest, pfft.

Fetterman is 1,000x better than Lamb.  State-wide elected official that is progressive with a blue collar streak that can appeal to a wide array of people.  Assuming he recovers from his stroke fully, and he should, he could very well be running for president in 2028.  Lamb was good for winning that one purple district he is in.  He would not stoke turnout in the major cities in Pennsylvania enough to win a statewide race even against Oz.

Here is how I handicap the close senate races:

Fetterman over Oz in PA
Warnock over Walker in GA in a squeaker because it's Georgia
Johnson over Barnes in WI even though Ron Johnson might be one of the stupidest human beings on the planet
Vance over Ryan in OH but closer than it should be in Ohio because Ryan has run a damn good campaign.  JD Vance is trash but it is Ohio after all.
Kelly over Masters in AZ because astronauts are always better than fascists, even in Arizona
Budd over Beasley in NC in a fairly close outcome
Rubio over Demings in FL because it's Florida.  They would elect Hitler if given the chance.
Masto should win re-election in NV but it looks close

I show a net pick-up for Democrats of 1 seat but there are a lot of very close races in potential pick-up states.  I just want the election done so I can start watching live tv again without seeing the same 3 political ads ad nauseum.

It was pretty fuckin cold here this morning.  Tell you what.

And it's supposed to be in the 70s over the weekend up in Chicagoland.  I am sure my sinuses are going to love that.

I concede that arguing politics rarely gets anyone anywhere, but imma still do it anyway. I refuse to sit idly by on what I feel are important matters.

I don't disagree with that sentiment but I tend to be very strategic about those kinds of debates.  If it's two people agreeing on a common set of facts and then debating how to address said facts, that can be a very good discussion.  However, if you can't agree with someone that fire is hot and water is wet, it's not worth wasting the mental energy of trying to convince them of anything.

Welcome.  Nice to have someone else in here to give and take some abuse.  Oh, and follow Illini sports, and sports in general.

If you like arguing about politics, you'll probably have a boner in here.  I personally stay away from that shit.

Arguing politics is like playing chess with a pigeon.  The pigeons will just knock over all the pieces, shit on the board and then strut around like it won.  I have my beliefs as does everyone else but at this point trying to inform or change minds is a fools errand.

Welcome to the board! Do you know Wayne?

I go way back to the old Scout board back to the Self years, but decided to rebrand and come on back.  I don't even remember my old handle.

Looks like a Twitter site for COVID frothers.  As long as the vaccine helps me avoid serious illness, hospitalization and death, I’m good.

The vaccines were never tested (for approval purposes) for 1) sterilizing immunity or 2) effect on transmission.  They were tested solely to determine whether or not they gave protection against severe illness.  It was later found, at least before Delta/Omicron, that the original round of vaccines had a fairly robust sterlizing immunity for an amount of time, which was a nice bonus.  But that was never the point.  It was to keep symptoms to a dull roar and keep people out of the hospital as much as possible.

Unfortunately we had a family friend that was from a staunch anti-vax family and as a result an otherwise healthy 35 year old woman died on New Year's Eve 2021 about 2 weeks after testing positive and left behind two young daughters.  At that point I lost every ounce of patience with the anti-vax BS.  It is a small sample size for sure but it's striking that it took a healthy 35-year-old woman (unvaxxed) in 2 weeks.  Tragic and insanely avoidable.  My wife caught it 2 days after school started this year (she is a teacher's aid) and she had very mild symptoms for about 2 days.  I got the omicron booster back in August and I had the chills and aches for a couple days but well worth it.  And my 5G has never been stronger.

The Deuce / Re: WTF are you watching today?

Given it's October I am doing horror films all month and diving pretty deep in some places.  So far, off the top of my head, I have watched:

Deadstream - fun goofy found footage film about a disgraced Youtuber that stays the night at a haunted house that ends up actually being haunted
Lake Mungo - found footage/mockumentary about the death of a teenager and ghostings
Hellraiser - new Hulu reimagining, wasn't amazing but much better than anything since Hellraiser 4
Grave Encounters 1 & 2 - more found footage, creepy as hell about an abandoned mental hospital
The Houses October Built - easily my favorite of the month so far, yet another found footage about friends traveling around trying to find the most extreme haunted houses and it gets creepy as all hell
The Houses October Built 2 - not as good as the first but still very solid and a fun twist ending

I will definitely be checking out VHS 99 when it drops on Shudder in a few days and plan to watch Terrifier 2 and see what gore Art the Clown is getting into.

I haven't been to a movie in a long time.  Although, I have been known to go into a movie theater, buy a bucket of popcorn, and walk out.  There's nothing like buttery movie theater popcorn.

Years ago I bought a movie theater-style popcorn machine and it is so much better than normal home popcorn.  I don't have the melted butter to coat everything but the popcorn coming fresh from the machine is so good.
