OSU been playing solid as of late and we have no one to guard Liddell.
Hopefully Trent is okay. Need to get others going this game outside of Ayo and Kofi.
Must win game. Illini are -5 today
-
Don’t have a good feeling about this matchup but thankfully someone is posting in something besides Rob’s bizarro balls thread. Go Illini.
-
Yeah not sure who we put on Liddell and don’t think we can stop him. Looks like a really bad matchup, but think we pull it out. I’ll say Illinois by 2.
And Rob’s one weird dude. Btw my answer to the poll was “your mom” and “I’m not obese.”
-

If only there was someone with the power to go in and change the title of that thread to Rob’s Bizarro Balls Thread.....
-
Yet another god awful start
-
Illiniois is never going to win The Learfield Director's Cup, is it?
-
Well this sucks.
-
The NCAA drought very well may continue this year...
-
Wtf was that?! I’m driving to St. Louis Aquarium to spend the day with my daughter, listening on the radio and they are playing terrible! Why do we continue to dig such a deep hole all the time?!
-
Sounds like Judy has hot balls today. Unfortunately, so does EJ Liddell.
-
Lots of bad defense and no shortage of bad offense. We have two studs and just a bunch of guys with major limitations.
-
This team was way too overhyped
-
Liddell is one cool cat and a grown-ass man!
-
Sounds like we need to go zone because we can’t guard worth a shit.
-
This announcing crew is even worse than the Illini
-
this team is more frustrating then Frankie's junior year that lost 3 straight
-
Traveling and possibly stepped out of bounds and no call?
-
Just not that good.

B1G scouting is real.

Indeed. Hopes for a deep tourney run are dissipating quickly.
-
Kofi let refs get under his skin.
-
Traveling and possibly stepped out of bounds and no call?
Why can't we get homer calls? There were 4 other pivotal calls. We actually could have easily had the ball, down 2, late in the game.
-
I thought the refs were decent until the last couple minutes. No excuse for missing that step out of bounds. Damonte still looks dinged up to me. His D has suffered.
-
Brad is mad
-
ChicagoFan right about Underwood. Tempo right about the Mack trade. Just need Trump to hit the button before Tuesday to complete the Apocalypse.
-
Outshot at home = loss. Hold the presses.
Curbelo should be our starting PG and playing 30 mpg on the promise that he drives when he's clear instead of launching from downtown.

LOL.
Agree we are a better team with Curbelo in the game.
-
The NCAA drought very well may continue this year...
If that happens, Underwood needs to be sent packing ASAP. No excuse for us to miss the tourney outside of getting decimated by COVID or whatever.
I still think we get in, but we look like an 8 or 9 seed at best right now.
-
This team has a lot of upside.
Obviously not on a path yet for a deep run, but still time.
Defense is a real problem.
Our 5 guards who play 90% of the minutes are average to below average defenders.
The idea that DW or TF are lock down defenders is a myth. Too small and not athletic enough. AD is barely average defender and Miller is a statue.
Curbelo is just OK.
Kofi is limited. Georgi is limited.
Until we fix the defense we are just a pretty good Top 20 ish team.
-

Partially this is an issue with running 6'3" guys to guard 6'7" guys. We should have a size advantage since we have the 7'er, but we neutralize it when the next tallest guy on the floor is either 6'5" in shoes or can't guard the perimeter.
-
O$U was making shots and we weren't... I still don't think we're as bad as some of you say

Agree. We are small and lack length.
We have a 6'3 guy playing the 4 except when Georgi is in with Kofi which creates a host of other issues, or when Hawkins sees the floor which is rare.
We are not very mentally tough either. We never start games ready to play.
We were a lot better last year on D.
-
Our next 6 games will not be as kind as our first 8. We could easily drop 4 of our next 6.
PSU
@MSU
IOWA
@IND
WIS
@MICH
-
We have 6 away games left that will be very tough and Iowa at home.
We could finish 5-6 or 6-5 and end up 16-10 heading into BTT.
Could win anywhere from 3 to 8 of the last 11 depending on the D.
-
Da'Monte has a 6-11 wingspan; which allows him to check 4s. I'd rather have a 6-8 combo forward with Monte off the bench though.
-
Having a tight end/fullback at the 4 would knock some double-teamers off Kofi's back. That would be useful.
Tom Izzo has had a lot of brutes play that role.

We might find ourselves on the bubble if we don't shape up. We lose to PSU and the wheels might start coming off
-
How would Timme fit?
-
DMW’s wingspan and his lock down D are approaching Chester Frazier levels of hyperbole.
-
How would Timme fit?
I honestly think now and thought then that he’s our biggest miss in the Brad Underwood era.
-
DMW’s wingspan and his lock down D are approaching Chester Frazier levels of hyperbole.
He works hard and makes a few hustle plays, but regularly gets backed down into the lane and abused like all of our wings.
I don't think we have one really way above average defender and played better team and help D last year.
-
Da'Monte has a 6-11 wingspan; which allows him to check 4s. I'd rather have a 6-8 combo forward with Monte off the bench though.
I call BS. LOL. If he had that ability he should have been put on Liddell who ripped us a new asshole. Liddell is only 6'7".
-
1. EJ Liddell is 6-7 and 240 with a 7-4 wingspan.
2. If tOSU had played Key and Liddell together, I could still see DMW on EJL.
Matchups were a problem. tOSU starters were 6-7, 6-8, 6-7, 6-6, and 6-3.
Lol
-
O$U was making shots and we weren't... I still don't think we're as bad as some of you say
Yeah, this game was exactly like the NW game, where there was a stretch in the 1st half where they made literally everything they threw up and we couldn’t hit anything. Unfortunately, OSU is better than NW, and we couldn’t come back the same way.
Matchups were a problem, but I think if we played OSU 10 times, we would win 7 of them. Just not this one.
-
I'd probably switch that to a 3 out of 10.
OSU didn't have two of their guards and still handled us start to finish. Illinois only lead in the game was 2-0. They also beat us on our own floor while both Kofi and Ayo combined for 37 pts and 15 rebounds.
This team lost their 3rd and 4th best players off last years team and their replacements have massively underachieved their production from last years team. Andre was the defensive soul of this team last year. Alan Griffin despite crappy defense was still the second highest offensive efficiency player last year in the Big Ten behind Garza.
At best I don't see us being any better than 3-3 in our next 6. I hope I end up eating my own words but we are only a Penn State loss away from the sky is falling. We reek of a double digit seed/bubble team.
-
Well, until we fix the defense and get some production off the bench besides Curbello we will be inconsistent.
We have to find some minutes for Hawkins especially. It's fine to be smaller, but DW and Miller never beat their defender and attack the hole, and Trent can't finish. And the guards are all too small to stop the 6'6" to 6'7" guys other teams have.
It will take a system effort.
-
If Liddell regularly connects on 4 of 7 threes moving forward, that might be true.
But at this point, it's an anomaly.
-
Is it really an anomaly when he’s their best player and our primary weakness is not having a player at his position? It was comical watching Kofi trying to guard him on the perimeter in the early going. It was comical watching him back down DMW and anyone else we tried to throw at him. Anyone that didn’t know Liddell was going to absolutely go off in that game hasn’t been paying attention.

We do not have a longer wing to handle these 6'6"- 6'7" guys.
We have been vulnerable all year to this. In addition our guards are not uber athletic or physical. Ayo has the most tools, but he is just not a plus defender.
The threes were an anomaly from his history, but he went 6-9 otherwise. Agree, he pretty much did what he wanted.
Sgt Hulka made zero in game adjustments and we are not developing anybody to throw in there when needed.

If we had kept Griffin we would be.
I don't know all of the details about him leaving, but it should have been a huge priority.
I do like that Sgt Hulka is trying to expand the bench and used a different lineup.
That is our only hope to get better down the stretch here.
-
Yeah really wish Griffin would have stuck around. I don’t think he and his family ever were that excited about him being here but I am sure they recognized that he’d playing the 4 a lot this year with Kofi and Ayo dominating the ball. He seems to have the green light at Syracuse and be playing more of a wing role. Hard to blame him.

Well, he is doing 16/7 at Syracuse with 29 threes. Taking 13 shots a game which he wouldn't get here with the Ayo NBA audition tour offense.
He is arguably a little more athletic and longer than anybody we have on the perimeter.
Kid made some stupid plays, but made a lot of plays.

he made plenty of stupid decisions on the court as well with all his dumb T's and ejections
glad to see he has possibly matured a bit and he would be a good fit here still but I think he was a bit too far from home
-
As much as I'd love to have EJ Liddell and/ or Drew Timme, I have some doubts as to fit, based on skill set. If Liddell consistently shot well from three; he would be a nice fit at the 4. He does not. He is an undersized 4/5 with exceptional length.
I have not seen Timme play much. Based on scouting reports, he is a better version of GB. Timme would be an upgrade in terms of passing, ball handling, and midrange shooting, but he would not stretch the defense.
Playing either Liddell or Timme with Kofi could create defensive issues, much like pairing GB with Kofi.
-
I think any serviceable longer 3/4 who can either bang like a mofo, or step out and hit threes and guard the other 3/4's would make us better.
Its just a roster hole unless Hawkins and Grandison can step up and add more. They might.
We have a tough slate of games coming up.

Agreed. Definitely need Grandison and Hawkins playing in that role more. I think Underwood finally realized that as well. That’s the balance we need.

Ayo is on his game today.
-
So far, so good
-
Can they bring in Dakich for the 2nd half ?
-
Both teams playing some good D
-
Shit that led away real fast. Lazy ass defense again
-
They have been getting some open 3s all game. Lucky they didn't hit a few earlier.
-
Let's see if Underwood scripts a 2-for-1 at the end of the half. Automatic in the NBA, but college coaching...not so much.
-
Whoever plays the better d wins this. Had a couple of lapses lately
-
Out shot them 60-40% from field only have 4 pt led.
-
High fiving down 4. lol
-
Out shot them 60-40% from field only have 4 pt led.
1-6 on 3s, 4-8 FT
-
Outrebounding them 18-15. Sure doesn't feel like it.
-
Gotta dial that D back up.
-
1-6 on 3s, 4-8 FT
They've hit 6 threes. Ayo's looking solid. But feels like we should be easily up double figures. 2nd chance pts. And perimeter Defense have to improve this half.
Hopefully Trent can help lock that down this half. He did have 2 fouls limited pt.
-
Illinois is getting the ball to Kofi when he has established good position down low and he's finishing. That's the key to the postseason for the team. If the Illini do that in the 2nd half, they'll win this game.
-
Gonna have to play a better 2nd half. It won't end up 60-40 shooting.
-
Kofi is completely out of gas
-
My fault. We were up by ten when I turned it on.
-
osu up 10 pts over last 10 minutes. 19-9 run
-
Damonte for 3! We needed that big shot
-
This will go to the wire. Hope we can hit some FTs.

Trent has 0 points. We could use a little something now.

Shit defense. Open 3 after open 3 after open 3.

Trent has 0 points. We could use a ittle something now.
There it is!

Damonte's D on Liddell :-*
-
And now the much anticipated, who-gives-a-shit-but-espn-has-been-hyping-all-week UNC/Duke game.
-
Curbelo with 19 pts, 5 boards and 6 assists.
-
Before tip-off, I thought Illinois would win by 7. The Illini are the better team; the only question was whether they would play to their strengths. Opponents can drive on Ohio State because the Buckeyes don't have a shot blocker.
Very good win for Illinois.
-
Three straight road wins @Wisky, @Mich, @OSU.
#roadkill
-
And now the much anticipated, who-gives-a-shit-but-espn-has-been-hyping-all-week UNC/Duke game.

Zoro dosunmu leads us to victory
-
Winning at a lock #1, then winning at what was, was, a good chance at a #1 seed is impressive.
-
We're playing like a Final Four team, like a 1 seed, and I'll stop there to not jinx anything. Let's keep the ball rolling.
-
28 pts, 15 boards, 6 assists from the bench! We sure know how to spread it around. Don't think anyone wants to play us at this point. Hats off to Brad! This team keeps improving.

Near as I can figure .....
We get the winner of 7-10 seed game Fri night on BTN.
Assuming Wisco, Md and Rutgers end up 10-10. Wisco still gets the #6 seed due to head to head and Md gets the #7 and Rutgers #8.
If Md loses to PSU, then Rutgers gets the 7 seed.
Indiana gets the #10 seed.

Damonte's D on Liddell :-*
This whole team has found another gear defensively. We are not the same team we were at the beginning of the season, and it’s going to be tough for any team to beat us if we get a fairly officiated game.
Underwood might not be the greatest Xs and Os coach, but he sure knows how to teach people how to play basketball. Kind of similar to Self in that regard, actually.
-

Agree that defense intensity has improved a lot in recent stretch. It was not very good early in year and inconsistent a lot until last few games. It is a game changer.
-
It’s not really surprising in retrospect that in the Covid era it took a while for a team that relies heavily on two freshmen to really come together. The high early ranking really set our expectations higher than they should have been based mostly on Ayo and Kofi coming back. Veteran teams like Tennessee and Mizzou started hot this year because they didn’t have to overcome assimilating new pieces with limited prep time to build chemistry and such. And now other more talented teams have passed them up as the season has worn on. We’ve also seen the gap close tremendously between Gonzaga/Baylor and the next tier of teams. And as always getting high level D out of freshmen usually takes some time.
-
All true, but the entire team has made a commitment to guarding harder.
It is a lot more effort.
The close calls vs shitty teams and the slow starts due to not guarding were a problem even a month ago.
We still have some things to clean up but it makes us very dangerous and capable of winning vs anyone now even when we are not hitting shots.
We didn't let OSU pull away even though we were cold most of second half and Kofi was nonexistent.
-
Yes more effort and more understanding of where to be and how to hedge. Playing smarter without fouling. Good adjustments have been made in our ball screen defense drop coverage as well.

Liddell’s playing. Hope he doesn’t go MJ flu game on our asses.
Just heard about his flu. My first thought ? A big game for him.
-
This game worries me.
Don't worry till it's time to worry.
-
Plummer with the bomb!
And another!
And another!
-
Two quick threes already for Plummer
-
EJ sucks chant :D
-
Damned nice save by Kofi to Grandi for the running hook.
-
Goode grabbing the tough rebounds. Love to see it.
-
Plummer is on FI-YA!!
-
That's definitely flagrant 2. Jeez Damonte.
EDIT: Flagrant 1 they say. Lucky.
-
Payne knows BBV can't play, yet he picks up 2 fouls reaching in from behind in 3 minutes.
Then DaMonte, on offense.
-
Now Trent has 2 fouls. Not good.
-
That was unnecessary Globetrotter shit by Curbelo. Damn sweet result though.
-
Payne knows BBV can't play, yet he picks up 2 fouls reaching in from behind in 3 minutes.
Then DaMonte, on offense.
Paine is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, Williams got to be smarter than that.
Curbelo with a great save that ends in a 3 for Plummer!
-

So what was the reason Melendez being unable to play?
-
PLUMMER!!
-
So what was the reason Melendez being unable to play?
Appendicitis. I think the announcers said out 10-12 days ?
-
Appendicitis. I think the announcers said out 10-12 days ?
Bummer. Hopefully it's only 12 days.
Thank goodness Plummer is on fire so far.
-
Typical Illinois game these days…
Start big…Take the foot off the gas and let the other team back in…
Can’t wait for the 2nd half of can Illinois hang on…
Story of the entire season…
-
Kyle fukkn Young. He's hurt us in the past.
Liddell with 17 minutes.
-
And that’s why we’re Illinois…
Not Arizona, Duke or god should I say it Gonzaga…
Yeah I know Gonzaga is good these days but come on…
I would rather watch the 2005 illinois/Arizona game, then sit thru this…
-
I’ve sat thru barely 20 win seasons before…
But the games were interesting with intrigue…
This team was preseason top 10, embarrassed by Cincinnati who can barely beat directional university these days…
Should’ve beat Arizona and Purdue at home but claimed moral victories instead…Yeah, we took the foot off the gas…
-
Get it together, boys. WTF.
-
There is no way an NBA team is going to waste a draft pick on Kofi.
-
37-18 run OSU.
-
We are so fucking overrated
-
Underwood does not know how to stop the bleeding. Ever.
-
Pathetic. This team blows
-
Underwhelm just didn't get red face yelly enough
-
🚬
-
Pathetic. This team blows
Will he ever learn to not bring the ball down to his waist?
-
Will he ever learn to not bring the ball down to his waist?
nope....nba....no fucking way.
-
Will he ever learn to not bring the ball down to his waist?
He kept it up once and got called for a flagrant 1. Then Jackson said that's the problem with being too tall. Elbows are up around the defenders chin. Lol.
-
Green light, Plummer.
-
Underwood does not know how to stop the bleeding. Ever.
A press.
-
and Grandison
-
Jeez Hawkins, can you make it a little more obvious?
-
Horse bleep offensive foul call.
Branham is rippin us a new one.
-
Where's tempo to tell us that's a bad look?
-
What’s the excuse gonna be this time…
E.J. Liddell was too good again???
-
Might as well put Kofi back in.
-
We might get to the 1 and 1 soon.
-
And the other thing we do well…
Make average players look like nba stars…
OSU player avg 11.8 ppg…
Dude goes for 30 against us because we’re Illinois…
-
Here comes the late token rally for the moral victory…
PAman and Spark must be jumping for joy…
-
OH SHIT
TWO POINT GAME
-
Am I gonna jynx it???😳😳😳
-
OH SHIT
TWO POINT GAME
Keep getting stops!
-
Damonte with the rally killer…
One question…
Why is he even playing???
He can’t score anymore…
-
Damonte is the biggest liability on this team.
-
Where's tempo to tell us that's a bad look?
Obsessing over me is a bad look.
-
Hell of a comeback, probably going to come up just short though. Need a small miracle.
A lot to hate, and some things to like about this game.
Only way this team is making a deep run is if our guards are drilling 3s.
-
26-32 on free shots. We don't do that.
-
No foul? total horsebleep!
-
Obsessing over me is a bad look.
Obsessing? I mention you once in forever. Get over yourself, white boy.
-
Kofi can be neutralized by guys with size who guard. Can’t run good offense in the half-court without Kofi or 3s. Guards too small to stop other potent guards.
Running out of excuses. This team is underachieving, and could be playing themselves into a 5 seed.
Hopefully that last 6 minutes was a team unifying moment. They’re barely scratching the surface of what they could be, but at a time they should be getting better, they are not.
-
We have the worst fucking officials in the Big 10. How did they miss that call on Frazier? Good lord this is maddening!
-
Obsessing? I mention you once in forever. Get over yourself, white boy.
I’ve posted like 3x since before the Super Bowl. Yet my name tumbles from your lips at a moment of high intensity. I can guarantee you this is the first time I’ve ever typed “chickengeorge” in a post.
-
We have the worst fucking officials in the Big 10. How did they miss that call on Frazier? Good lord this is maddening!
He was out of control, but clearly hit with the body.
-
We have the worst fucking officials in the Big 10. How did they miss that call on Frazier? Good lord this is maddening!
It's the "we don't want to decide the outcome of the game" crap. By not calling it, they do decide the outcome.
-
Underwood shit the bed tonight. He has to be better.
-
I think Trent for sure got bodied on the turnover. Leave it to the idiot officials to swallow the whistle. You know if that was Liddell or Branham, that's a foul with the death penalty following suit.
We didn't lay down and lose by 25 like I thought it would end up. Credit to the kids for not quitting and giving themselves a chance at the end at least.
But it continues to be a recurring theme for us: we build a early double digit lead, lose focus, commit a flagrant/technical and breathe new life into the opponent. We cannot continue to have those runs where we get blitzed and the game gets away from us not long after. Just can't happen.
-
32-17 WAS THE FOUL DIFFERENCE...so much for home cooking???
ILLINI fouled alot, but hell the Buckeyes did as well....call it both ways is all.
ILLINI have to be stronger with a lead, BU, has to find a way to keep energy level high.
Hawkins came on late, maybe a plus moving forward, defense should have at least sporadically pressed way earlier, Ohio St. guards are garbage except for the freshman pro that lit us up.
-
Underwood shit the bed tonight. He has to be better.
I don't know why the fuck Underwood takes eternity to stop the bleeding when we're getting blitzed. It's maddening.
Getting the boot was the best thing he did all night. That was the just the spark they needed to almost pull it off.
-

Other than being stubborn, I dont think it should be that difficult.
Change defenses up. Get them out of their comfort zone.
It doesnt always work, but .....

Yep. Agree completely. Last year I really liked the team and their potential and that came to a screeching halt two days into the tourney.
This team is above average but not much better than that. Things really need to click cause talent alone isn't there and won't win us tight games.
At this point my only goal is a sweet sixteen. It needs to happen. If not, actually not going to go there. Just get to the SS after almost a few decades of not doing it.
-
We have been out of sorts for awhile. 6-5 over last 11 games. We are not coming together down the stretch like we have the last 2 years.
Not sure what the answers are, but we have the talent.
-

BU is just too stubborn to play a zone, even if it means protecting Kofi or help keep the opposition from getting offensive rebounds, possible long runs. He just isn't going to do it. As Tempo said, he's gotta get better.

Had a bad feeling about this matchup without RJ and BBV. This team continues to be less than the sum of its parts. Of course, a lot of that has to do with having precious few moments as a healthy cohesive unit, but now would be a great time for that to change.
Per usual the officiating was trash. I don’t even know what a foul is anymore. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Illinois get fucked at home more by officiating as much as this and the Purdue game. OSU got rewarded for flopping over and over again, but to their credit they took advantage of every opportunity they got to do so and we provided plenty of them. I mean, how do all these guys go to the floor with explosive flops after marginal contact and writhe in pain or lay motionless like they’re knocked out then magically return to competition moments later with zero ill effects?
Credit to OSU for a really really good stretch of basketball to open up that lead. Holtmann is a hell of a coach. Branham is a beast and a matchup nightmare for us given that DMW had to play their bigger guys.
Loved seeing the fight down the stretch. Had chances and it was heartbreaking they couldn’t close it out. Never really thought we had it even when we closed it to two with almost two minutes left or when Trent made the three. Feel for Trent, he’s probably going to be thinking about that possession where he threw it away for a while.
I’m no longer a DMW apologist. Loved his dad and DMW is a warrior. I realize he’s limited but provides a lot of value in certain ways at certain times, but have really grown tired of the cheap shots/losing his composure in big games. He can’t really control being an offensive liability—he is what he is at this point. But he can control the emotional outbursts that invariably hurt the team.
He’s lucky he wasn’t given a flagrant 2. When he picks up his monthly flagrant, it universally leads to a loss of momentum and a big run for the opponent. I have a lot of colleagues and neighbors and friends that follow the B1G and frankly it’s getting kind of embarrassing to get texts during games from multiple people wondering why Illinois is hitting people. Although I believe PAMan approves of these hard fouls. 🤷🏻♂️🤣
I don’t hate what Brad did. The officials were trash. The team and crowd needed a spark and we went on a huge run to close the gap to 2 with almost two minutes left after he was ejected. Geoff and co. did a great job in his stead.
I thought the “EJ sucks” chant was complete bullshit. He’s a good kid and a hell of a player. I’m sure he was loving it when he was knocking down those shots and FTs at the end.
I’ve said this a thousand times but why the fuck does Kofi take an hour to make a move to the basket? This HAS to be fixed. When he allows three-four guys to swarm on him he is fucked. When he catches it deep he needs to catch and immediately create space and get the ball going towards the rim. Any team with some legit size and athleticism has this scouted to death and will continue to make his life hell. Plus once he has multiple guys on him it makes getting a rebound that much more difficult.
We need to run more sets to attack the basket. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that when Kofi went out and we went small and pressured that we made a big run. It changed the entire matchup situation and allowed us to space the floor, move the ball, and get downhill. Love Kofi to death, but there are definitely downsides to having a behemoth on the floor in today’s game.
Thought Hawkins played really well tonight for the most part. Really good to see him make some strides after a disappointing season thus far. I want to see him play the 5 more going forward.
I’m guessing Brad hasn’t implemented a zone because he obviously wants to focus on being the best we can be at man D, but also because we are so small at the guard positions. We certainly could have done it last year when we had Miller and Ayo, and it probably would have helped against Loyola, but those guys were really solid man defenders so I can kind of understand focusing on being really good at what you do.
But there are times like tonight when we took a TO to draw up a play and Holtmann threw that 2-3 at us and really disrupted what we wanted to do. Would LOVE to see that wrinkle from time to time to shake things up when the other team is on a roll.
After watching the atmosphere in the Hall, the Arizona-Utah in SLC matchup looks like a mausoleum. The seating area is dark, the lighting is cold and harsh. The mics on their baskets sounds like they’re broken. Looks like dozens of people came out to see the game. Good reminder that the Big Ten has best atmosphere in the country and it shouldn’t be taken for granted.
Arizona is really good. They’re my favorites to cut down the nets come April.

There are real Big Ten villains around.

Can't let a team do this to you, and expect to win.
2nd half scoring ....
I'm not sure the 32 points on 2 assists can be right tho.

Also, the crowd had a spark tonight if you get what I’m saying.
-
I got to the part where you said you thought the EJ sucks chant was bullshit and I couldn’t agree more.
Orange Krush is terrible. They're unoriginal, irritating and probably do more harm than good.
Taunting the referees, for example, is unlikely to yield favorable calls.
-
All those thoughts entered my mind tonight. If I were the DIA I’d be sending a fucking directive to Krush leadership before the next game.
The very last things we need from our student section are embarrassing chants that motivate our opponents and piss off the officials.
-
How many double digit leads have we blown?
-
We have been out of sorts for awhile. 6-5 over last 11 games. We are not coming together down the stretch like we have the last 2 years.
Not sure what the answers are, but we have the talent.
It's easy we are playing our way down to a 4-5 seed so we can get upset easier in the 1st rd of the dance. The Shining Moment may just be too big for some
-
This team plain and simple has regressed since our Covid break. We have lost 3 of our last 5 and did about everything we could to try and lose the other 2. I called this out back in early February and see absolutely no reason it won't continue for these last 3 games. UM will kick the dogshit out of us.
-
4 or 5 seed my ass. Going to be tough to pull that off with double digit losses.
-
Hard to say we are better without Curbelo now

I wholeheartedly believe that college basketball officials bet on games.

Hard to say we are better without Curbelo now
Not exactly sure I understand your post, but I think you are saying that some people were thinking we were playing better without him before Xmas and right after.
And now that he is still not playing a lot we are now struggling so that idea isn't accurate?
He is playing 18 mpg this year.
He played 21 mpg last year.
His Offensive Rating last year was 101.8. (average overall really, but I am sure it was higher in last part of year).
His Offensive Rating this year is 85.9. (very bad). It is worse on team by far.
His shooting and more importantly decision making this year has not been good. (we saw that at times last year but he calmed down).
He turns it over at a higher rate than all of the other rotation guys.
I hear reports about only a limited number of practices this year.
I feel for the kid, but he is not ready for this much game play at a high level.
We have had all of the other guys struggling also after Xmas off and on. Some more than others.
Not sure if Curbelo being back and playing what I would call major rotation minutes is correlated, but I do think we do not play the same way
when he is in. The ball gets stuck with him a lot. He is a shot first mentality too often and he is not efficient at all.
It takes away shot attempts and touches from other guys who are better options.
That said- everybody needs to play better and Underwood needs to adjust better in games.
We have some time to turn it around.
And as much as we are inconsistent right now a S16 is within reach and we have not done that since 2005.
Amazingly we have won only 4 tournament games in last 16 years.
-
Orange Krush is terrible. They're unoriginal, irritating and probably do more harm than good.
Taunting the referees, for example, is unlikely to yield favorable calls.
well that explains why we get homered, at home all the fucking time
-
on a side note, we completely fell apart after Frazier picked up his 2nd foul - which was complete horseshit, he was literally frozen in place with his hands vertical
refs overall were pretty horrible, Kofi was being murdered out there, but we made a lot of stupid mistakes and O$U couldn't miss
#22 on O$U would chicken wing his way to the hoop every single drive
belo is useless, Hawkins has his moments, overall the starters only played well for about 10 minutes and that was covered up by Plummer's hot shooting
Melendez may have helped this evening with his size and length
fans were pretty good but not sure why they were booing EJ
other than that, why the hell do we lose at home so much
very frustrating
-
I wholeheartedly believe that college basketball officials bet on games.
hot take, high probability that it is true
-
fans were pretty good but not sure why they were booing EJ
They were booing Liddell because he's from Belleville. If they boo every kid from Illinois on opposing Big 10 teams, they'd be booing all the time ever since the Krush was started. In some cases that could be a "psyche up" for those players.
-
I wholeheartedly believe that college basketball officials bet on games.
I'm coming around to this.
-
I wholeheartedly believe that college basketball officials bet on games.
Ding ding ding. We have a winner!
-

Would be surprised if they didn't.

I was confused as hell by the EJ Liddell stuff. It wasn't even clever like vintage MSU student section stuff.

I stopped reading his post at “had a bad feeling without RJ and BBV.”
I mean, really? They are end of the rotation role players who haven’t even logged consistent minutes all season.
-
For example, we won the previous game on the road game at MSU in which they combined for 11 minutes and 3 rebounds. Whose first thought is “how will we win without RJ and BBV?”

I dunno. Melendez has been a nice spark off the bench. I think he and Hawkins should be 6/7 off the bench. Then the big backup of choice of the day, and then Curbelo on very very short lease.
BBV has been up and down, but he has his moments.
-
Not even arguing they couldn’t have helped, but we didn’t lose because we didn’t have Melendez available.
-
We'll just skip the 10 and 14 points from Melendez in the 2 previous games.
-
You give up a 50-21 run on your home court (from up 21-8 to down 58-42), thats a coaching issue.
You need good coaching to stop runs.
This was a loss that should have never happened. You shoot 12-25 on 3s, on your home court, and still lose. Inexcusable.
Underwood will go down as the 2nd worst coach in the history of the Illinois program, ahead of only John Groce which is a very low bar

I’m honestly more embarrassed about this game than some of the biggest blowouts we have suffered in both basketball and football over the years. That shit was trashy across the board. We’ve got guys hitting people, a student section with idiotic chants, coach getting thrown out, 20+ mins of completely impotent play, other asshole fans chiming in, all to the tune of a big fat conference title damning L on our home court.
-

What other coach has achieved less in his first 5 years on the job than Underwood? He's won 1 NCAA game. 2 season of 20+ losses, and will be bad again next year.
Slightly better than John Groce isn't something to hang your hat on

Underwood will go down as the 2nd worst coach in the history of the Illinois program, ahead of only John Groce which is a very low bar
I’m always impressed how you always, ALWAYS up your own bar of stupidity. Like no matter what. It’s incredible.

😂🤣 what in the actual fuck is this shit?!
I guess we know for certain now that you’re a full-blown troll🤷🏻♂️
It’s fuckin’ Truth man, did you really just find that out for certain right now?

Did he say anything about his players flopping?

The_Truth is definitely an imposter.
Dominic seems legit but could be parody.

No, the guy named the_truth is an imposter.

Thanks for the clarification as it appears I got them confused. Either way they’re both shitty trolls.

Oh good…
The drunk is here to preach about the moral victory…

Never change man. Not only are you clearly uninformed about our team and matchups, you literally changed what I said to prop up your argument.
I quoted you almost verbatim. RJ and BBV weren’t the secret sauce to beating OSU no matter what kind of pseudo-insightful analysis you offered.
-
We'll just skip the 10 and 14 points from Melendez in the 2 previous games.
Oh, is he the reason people have called us a Final Four contender since November?
-
I’m honestly more embarrassed about this game than some of the biggest blowouts we have suffered in both basketball and football over the years. That shit was trashy across the board. We’ve got guys hitting people, a student section with idiotic chants, coach getting thrown out, 20+ mins of completely impotent play, other asshole fans chiming in, all to the tune of a big fat conference title damning L on our home court.
I actually agree with you here.
-
Oh, is he the reason people have called us a Final Four contender since November?
No. That would be Curbelo. Remember ?
-
I quoted you almost verbatim. RJ and BBV weren’t the secret sauce to beating OSU no matter what kind of pseudo-insightful analysis you offered.
It’s more intellectually honest to quote someone verbatim rather than tweak it to make it look like an entirely different statement or mindset.
Yes, being down two bigger guys that can defend/rebound when playing a team that can throw some beef at you is a disadvantage. Add in Kofi’s unexpected foul trouble, and it had a big impact on the game.
We had 6’3” (maybe) DMW playing defense on guys even bigger than usual. Hawkins was playing the five. Admittedly, he did a pretty fair job of it for a guy that started the season playing a point forward role.
And let’s just throw out the fact that RJ has emerged as a real bright spot on both ends of the floor the last few weeks.
But yeah, there’s just no way these guys could have helped us get over the hump in a game we were down by 1 with under a minute to play with our All American big on the bench most of second half.
-
Show me exactly how I “tweaked it.”
-

No one is saying “they couldn’t have helped.” But thinking “we are in trouble without Melendez and BBV” is a bridge too far. I’m sure you envisioned Branham nearly tripling his scoring average against us. And Kofi fouling out.
They are complimentary players, and that’s being generous to BBV. We can beat OSU with or without them. We just had a shit night.
-
How many games have you watched this year?
-
How many games have you watched this year?
Enough to know that Melendez and BBV weren’t the secret sauce necessary to beat OSU.
-
Over the last handful of games Melendez has apparently exceeded 11 minutes once. BBV averages 2. Spare me with the “they were critical to our success” take. We just played poorly for 25 minutes and let the game get away from us. It happens.
-
Going small worked. Kofi was ineffective against double and quadruple teams.
Did you watch the Ohio State game?

If you were surprised by Branham I question how closely you follow this league honestly.
He’s playing about as well as anyone in the Big Ten right now.
-
We had no one to stop a 6'5" Branham. A 6'7" Melendez, with his quickness, may have been able to disrupt him a little.
Going into a game with a short bench is not ideal.
-

Not that closely to be truthful. He’s had a few good games in a row. Point still stands that Melendez and BBV were not the critical links to beating OSU.
If OSU and Illinois were to meet in the BTT title game, I’d bet Melendez and BBV being out wouldn’t move the betting line even a half a point.
-

As I said, BBV is getting about 2 mpg. Melendez has topped 11 once maybe twice. Mop up players average 6-8. COULD Melendez have helped? Sure. Was him being out the reason we lost, or did we “need” him to win. Probably not.
-

He said he had a bad feeling. One sentence, that said, basically, damn, those guys are out. You are the one extrapolating shit from that.
Custard had a bad feeling about the game because we were missing a couple of players. I’ve had bad feelings about games for no reason at all. He said he had a bad feeling. He didn’t say our winning or losing hinged on their presence. He had a bad fucking feeling.
Not sure why you felt like you had to jump on that, but whatever. Carry on.
-

You’re arguing with yourself. Nobody said that. He had a bad feeling. Christ.
Nobody said we lost because those guys were out. Someone said, damn, those guys are out. I don’t feel so good about the game now. Who gives a fuck?
-
So, in a nutshell he had a bad feeling.
-
I had a bad feeling Kofi was gonna play like shit, and foul out.

Yes, that’s all he said.

Cool.

I mean, if you can tell me that he said anything different, I’m all ears.

Jobu, didn’t you once crucify me over “having a feeling” the Bulls would draft Ayo?
Not sure why you had to jump on that, but carry on.
-

Sure. I felt like your “had a feeling” was meant to say “look at me I’m a genius.” I mean, given your past history about all of the AOTC bullshit that you hang your hat on, it was a reasonable assumption. I may have been wrong. I’ll allow for that.
When Custard said “I had a bad feeling”, it felt like just that. He wasn’t trying to be a genius, or the smartest guy in the fucking room. When he said that, it felt genuine. Like, damn, no RJ or BBV. Have a bad feeling about this one.
Nothing that I read from you feels genuine. It just feels super hot takey and shitty.
I thought you going after Custard over that was weird. Just my opinion.

Branham is a potential lottery pick, so it’s obvious Tempo hasn’t watched much this year. Let alone him admitting he hasn’t watched much. YET… he CONSTANTLY comes on here and acts like he knows EVERY FUCKING THING about EVERY FUCKING THING. How is that possible when you haven’t even watched much and try to educate people who have?! 🤔 I’ll hang up and wait for you to explain…
-
I just think that to point to missing two very end of the rotation bench players as a reason to “have a bad feeling” is kind of absurd. Melendez can certainly be a useful player, but he’s not going to be a big reason this team wins or loses (this year).

Again, if these two teams were to meet for the BTT title, and Melendez and BBV were both out, it wouldn’t impact the line at all.
I also, enjoyed the movie Red Dawn btw.

Ok. So, you are essentially telling people when they should and shouldn’t have bad feelings about shit?
Why? I don’t understand that.

Custard appreciates you sticking up for him. This place needed a hero today, and you were it.

Tell me more about things you don’t know anything about. I’d love to hear more about that guy that lit us up and is also a lottery pick that you know nothing about.

Ok, I’m done. The post you quoted was about Branham. Had nothing to do with BBV or RJ.
You’re not being genuine, or arguing anything in good faith.
It’s almost like you’re a bot at this point.
Carry on, all. What a joke.

No it doesnt.
The end.

Before the game even started I mentioned this game concerned me. I didn’t have time to elaborate much because I was finishing up some work stuff. So I did so after the game.
OSU always plays us tough, they are a tough matchup for us, and Holtmann is a hell of a coach. They beat us at our place last year and took us to OT in the BTT. They present a lot of the same problems this year except for Duane Washingbeard going off for a million, but they now have Branham who is a similar type of player but with a higher ceiling. The kind of big guard that routinely gives us fits.
So then add in that we were down our own athletic freshman wing that has been playing well and a backup defensive specialist that could spell Kofi against their bigs and it tipped me from feeling like a game we should win to more of a toss up feeling.
Melendez guards and has active hands. He would have helped us, especially when Kofi was out. Throwing BBV at Liddell instead of letting him eat DMW alive could have been helpful too.
-
Every game against ranked opponents concern me.
-
I had a bad feeling when I saw there were 3 new pages to this thread.

He needs to work harder establishing better position on the low block. He is often the last guy down the floor and half the time he's getting the ball too far away from the basket.
-
I don't watch much other conference hoops, mostly due to time. But it looks like other teams have better floor spacing and don't necessarily park the big guy down low. Space the floor with Kofi's double and triple teamers farther away from Kofi, with Kofi outside the lane. Kofi can try to break to the basket with man to man, but its got to be a good pass because Kofi is not a great ball handler.
-
Our half court offense just hasn't been good. Certainly not consistent. Today we will have to be special I think to win. I know we are -4, but just doesn't feel right with me. Iowa is playing better than anyone in the conference right now Wisconsin included. Winners of their last 4 road games, and winning 8 of their last 9 by double digits. They are a match up nightmare for us on the wings. Hawkins has to have a good game today.
-
KenPom has it as Illinois (-1).
We were 11-25 from three last time in Iowa City.
Will need to do something similar.
-
Don’t feel good about this game either

Is he going to play? Kid is a baller.

No idea, but I sure hope so. His height and athleticism might come in handy vs Murray.

Game highlight said Malaki Brenham has the largest pts/game increase from non-con to conference of any major conference player.

Hopefully he brings O$U back in this game and knocks Michigan to the NIT for sure

Yep. Howard should not be coaching in an NCAA tournament game this year.
But tOSU continues the tailspin.
We beat xxxx, and Rutgers, tOSU, xxxx tie at 12-8. Rutgers is 1-0 vs both but the 3 team tie breaker kicks in. 2-0 would win that tho.

Who the fuck is xxxx?

Who the fuck is xxxx?
Iowa

The thing about Michigan is they still get more games to improve resume and have already beaten Iowa,Purdue,Michigan state, Rutgers and Ohio state and all those teams are getting in…
I don’t like Howard, but I don’t see them at this point dropping any farther then first four…

Man, Trent Frazier deserves a B1G championship! Let’s fucking do this!
