Other than being stubborn, I dont think it should be that difficult.
Change defenses up. Get them out of their comfort zone.
It doesnt always work, but .....
BU is just too stubborn to play a zone, even if it means protecting Kofi or help keep the opposition from getting offensive rebounds, possible long runs. He just isn't going to do it. As Tempo said, he's gotta get better.

Had a bad feeling about this matchup without RJ and BBV. This team continues to be less than the sum of its parts. Of course, a lot of that has to do with having precious few moments as a healthy cohesive unit, but now would be a great time for that to change.

Per usual the officiating was trash. I don’t even know what a foul is anymore. Don’t think I’ve ever seen Illinois get fucked at home more by officiating as much as this and the Purdue game. OSU got rewarded for flopping over and over again, but to their credit they took advantage of every opportunity they got to do so and we provided plenty of them. I mean, how do all these guys go to the floor with explosive flops after marginal contact and writhe in pain or lay motionless like they’re knocked out then magically return to competition moments later with zero ill effects?

Credit to OSU for a really really good stretch of basketball to open up that lead. Holtmann is a hell of a coach. Branham is a beast and a matchup nightmare for us given that DMW had to play their bigger guys.

Loved seeing the fight down the stretch. Had chances and it was heartbreaking they couldn’t close it out. Never really thought we had it even when we closed it to two with almost two minutes left or when Trent made the three. Feel for Trent, he’s probably going to be thinking about that possession where he threw it away for a while.

I’m no longer a DMW apologist. Loved his dad and DMW is a warrior. I realize he’s limited but provides a lot of value in certain ways at certain times, but have really grown tired of the cheap shots/losing his composure in big games. He can’t really control being an offensive liability—he is what he is at this point. But he can control the emotional outbursts that invariably hurt the team.

He’s lucky he wasn’t given a flagrant 2. When he picks up his monthly flagrant, it universally leads to a loss of momentum and a big run for the opponent. I have a lot of colleagues and neighbors and friends that follow the B1G and frankly it’s getting kind of embarrassing to get texts during games from multiple people wondering why Illinois is hitting people. Although I believe PAMan approves of these hard fouls. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

I don’t hate what Brad did. The officials were trash. The team and crowd needed a spark and we went on a huge run to close the gap to 2 with almost two minutes left after he was ejected. Geoff and co. did a great job in his stead.

I thought the “EJ sucks” chant was complete bullshit. He’s a good kid and a hell of a player. I’m sure he was loving it when he was knocking down those shots and FTs at the end.

I’ve said this a thousand times but why the fuck does Kofi take an hour to make a move to the basket? This HAS to be fixed. When he allows three-four guys to swarm on him he is fucked. When he catches it deep he needs to catch and immediately create space and get the ball going towards the rim. Any team with some legit size and athleticism has this scouted to death and will continue to make his life hell. Plus once he has multiple guys on him it makes getting a rebound that much more difficult.

We need to run more sets to attack the basket. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that when Kofi went out and we went small and pressured that we made a big run. It changed the entire matchup situation and allowed us to space the floor, move the ball, and get downhill. Love Kofi to death, but there are definitely downsides to having a behemoth on the floor in today’s game.

Thought Hawkins played really well tonight for the most part. Really good to see him make some strides after a disappointing season thus far. I want to see him play the 5 more going forward.

I’m guessing Brad hasn’t implemented a zone because he obviously wants to focus on being the best we can be at man D, but also because we are so small at the guard positions. We certainly could have done it last year when we had Miller and Ayo, and it probably would have helped against Loyola, but those guys were really solid man defenders so I can kind of understand focusing on being really good at what you do.

But there are times like tonight when we took a TO to draw up a play and Holtmann threw that 2-3 at us and really disrupted what we wanted to do. Would LOVE to see that wrinkle from time to time to shake things up when the other team is on a roll.

After watching the atmosphere in the Hall, the Arizona-Utah in SLC matchup looks like a mausoleum. The seating area is dark, the lighting is cold and harsh. The mics on their baskets sounds like they’re broken. Looks like dozens of people came out to see the game. Good reminder that the Big Ten has best atmosphere in the country and it shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Arizona is really good. They’re my favorites to cut down the nets come April.

I didn’t read this whole novel but I got to the part where you said you thought the EJ sucks chant was bullshit and I couldn’t agree more.  EJ seems like a good kid and is a phenomenal player, I’ve got nothing but respect for him and I hate that our fans treat him like a Big Ten villain because he didn’t choose us.  There are real Big Ten villains around.

Can't let a team do this to you, and expect to win.
2nd half scoring ....
I'm not sure the 32 points on 2 assists can be right tho.

Orange Krush is terrible. They're unoriginal, irritating and probably do more harm than good.

Taunting the referees, for example, is unlikely to yield favorable calls.

All those thoughts entered my mind tonight. If I were the DIA I’d be sending a fucking directive to Krush leadership before the next game.

The very last things we need from our student section are embarrassing chants that motivate our opponents and piss off the officials.

We have been out of sorts for awhile. 6-5 over last 11 games. We are not coming together down the stretch like we have the last 2 years.
Not sure what the answers are, but we have the talent.

It's easy we are playing our way down to a 4-5 seed so we can get upset easier in the 1st rd of the dance. The Shining Moment may just be too big for some

This team plain and simple has regressed since our Covid break.  We have lost 3 of our last 5 and did about everything we could to try and lose the other 2.  I called this out back in early February and see absolutely no reason it won't continue for these last 3 games. UM will kick the dogshit out of us.

Hard to say we are better without Curbelo now

Not exactly sure I understand your post, but I think you are saying that some people were thinking we were playing better without him before Xmas and right after.
And now that he is still not playing a lot we are now struggling so that idea isn't accurate?

He is playing 18 mpg this year.
He played 21 mpg last year.

His Offensive Rating last year was 101.8. (average overall really, but I am sure it was higher in last part of year).
His Offensive Rating this year is 85.9. (very bad). It is worse on team by far.

His shooting and more importantly decision making this year has not been good. (we saw that at times last year but he calmed down).
He turns it over at a higher rate than all of the other rotation guys.

I hear reports about only a limited number of practices this year.

I feel for the kid, but he is not ready for this much game play at a high level.

We have had all of the other guys struggling also after Xmas off and on. Some more than others.

Not sure if Curbelo being back and playing what I would call major rotation minutes is correlated, but I do think we do not play the same way
when he is in. The ball gets stuck with him a lot. He is a shot first mentality too often and he is not efficient at all.

It takes away shot attempts and touches from other guys who are better options.

That said- everybody needs to play better and Underwood needs to adjust better in games.

We have some time to turn it around.
And as much as we are inconsistent right now a S16 is within reach and we have not done that since 2005.
Amazingly we have won only 4 tournament games in last 16 years.
