I think it's all about feeling better, feeling like they did something about a hopeless mess. It enough people virtue signal / offer thoughts and prayers / make symbolic gestures/ spread good will, maybe things will be less fucked up.

This is what I said to my neighbor this morning after her husband was hauled away in an ambulance last night .

I have been told that. I don't ever actually ask for anything. If I need help, a close friend or family member is already there.

But if you didn’t have a friend or a family member to help, you could have called them and they’d have helped. Which is more useful and sincere than publicity stunts and platitudes.
