I walked through Campustown last night. Murphy's had people sitting at every table.

A block to the west is a Cafe Benne. It was full too.

San Francisco is opening indoor dining and bars, 25% capacity, must be seated, no standing room.

San Francisco County is at 2 cases/100,000 people. The state as a whole is at 5/100k, best in the US

Champaign County is at 13/100k. Illinois as a whole is at 17/100k

Oh but think of the the economy! California has a 75 Billion dollar surplus due to excess revenues because our economy has done well despite the pandemic, half of that money is being sent directly back to taxpayers as a stimulus payment. LA Times reported the other day that 40% of new jobs in the US since February have been in California.

So much for Newsom being recalled. Numbers don't lie.

The largest portion of the California economy is financial services including Real Estate
Then professional and business services, then Government, then Manufacturing, and finally Information Technology in 5th

Entertainment represents only a couple percent of our economy.

We do have a very large company headquartered in Mountain View, it's called "Google". You should check it out sometime, it's pretty neat.

The source of the surplus is still being debated, a lot of current wisdom is that there were a lot of real estate transactions, producing a lot of fees and taxable capital gains events. And the short term real estate rental market went ballistic with people spending weeks and months in remote areas. That is income, which is taxable at a state level.

Local budgets on the other hand, have been hit because sales taxes at restaurants are down, but this is mitigated somewhat in that the real estate transactions have created an increase in property taxes.

My ex-BIL had a house in Mountain View. He held on to it after they got married and moved to Belmont.

I wonder how much it's worth now.

You don't see the irony of throwing shade at California succeeding during the pandemic just because we had the advantage of growing the 7th largest economy prior to COVID. We should have been a dumpster fire instead
