History has shown NFL evaluators know shit about QBs. Luck rules.

Lol ok

Are you serious?

Evaluating quarterbacks is hard. But if a new GM steps up to the podium and he’s asked about his plan to find a quarterback and he says “I hope we luck into one” he would be laughed out of the building.

That isn't the point.  The point is that history tells us that it is all luck when evaluating that position.

Why a good move for them and a bad one for the Bears?

Like PMan stated they are kinda dumb. Although a 4th isn’t bad and it’s Jerry Jones, you expected something like this from him. They aren’t sure about Dak so this is their contingency plan. It creates more of a mess with that situation. I don’t like that for the Bears. Get the new guy in the draft if Fields doesn’t pan out.
Because FOX News told me so…

And yet every franchise bends over backwards to find one. Just because the miss rate is high, doesn’t mean it’s “luck.” Almost every qb worth a damn is a 1st or 2nd round draft choice. Occasionally you get “lucky” and find a guy in later rounds.

If it was all “luck,” you’d be seeing pro-bowlers and HOFers drafted all over the board. Again, the overwhelming amount of high level starters are 1st and 2nd round talents.

Why not give up a 4th rounder for a guy who not that long ago was given 3 1st rounders for, and was held back by a serious injury. He can sit behind Fields and learn in a low stress environment. If Fields gets hurt, you’ve got a similar talent type to play behind him. If Lance develops you can either play him, or trade him and easily recoup your 4th round pick. I think the Bears were an ideal landing spot for Lance. As were the Cowboys.

Of course everyone wants one. My point is they all do a terrible job scouting and it is basically luck to get one. The GOAT was a 6th round draft pick who only got on the field because Drew Bledsoe got hurt. He was the 199th pick in that draft despite all the scouting, film watching, combines, blah blah blah, and no one had an inkling. Who knows if he ever would have played had Bledsoe not gotten hurt.

The point is, a lot of effort and resources still go into getting a top tier quarterback. I’d call what you’re talking about randomness more than I would “luck.” Most HOF caliber quarterbacks are high draft picks.

Yes, quite randomly the GOAT was a 6th round draft choice. But his rivals, Manning, Manning, Brees, Roethlisberger, and Mahomes were all high or very very high draft picks.

And just as many busts were high draft picks. They are high picks because of the importance of the position.

Add Favre, Rodgers, Luck, Rivers, Stafford, Goff into that mix if you like.

Again, “luck” isn’t a plan. What you’re referring to is variance. I’ll bet the bust rate on other positions isn’t wildly different. How many 1st round busts have the Bears had?

And Roger's got pushed down in the draft....because of all the great scouting and QB talent evaluation in the NFL. You call it randomness,  I call it luck.
