For an NFL charter team that set a franchise record for consecutive losses, I'm not sure that I expected the 'Belichek talked to Eberflus post-game' argument and a continuation of 'ESB dropped the perfectly thrown spiral costing the Bears a victory because everyone knows he would have ended up in the end zone but they couldn't win anyway because they have no talent and it's part of the tanking process' arguments. In May.
There’s about 6 ways in which you’re being obtuse or flat out wrong here.
1) “NFL charter franchise record losing streak” is a strawman. For several of reasons. One, they’ve had a couple of worse or just as bad seasons. They also played more games which allowed them to set the record for losses. They also weren’t prioritizing winning (for the 30th time). Are you really going to fault Poles for trying to clean up the mess left behind by Ryan Pace? Could you not see that he was tearing the whole thing down on purpose? I could spend 5 minutes on this first strawman alone.
2) I merely pointed out that Belichick was clearly impressed by what Ebeflus is doing. Why? Because Belichick is smart enough to know that Eberflus didn’t beat him with the better/more talented team. The fact that Belichick took time to speak to Eberflus after getting his ass kicked by him was a clear sign of respect. It guarantees nothing. Just shows that some smart football people like what they see. And of course, you ran hook, line, and sinker with PAMan’s unclever bit.
3) The ESB drop isn’t the one alluded to here. It was Mooney’s bobble at the goal line. PAMan said “if JFC were a little better at quarterback perhaps they could have eeked out a win against the Commanders.” Well I showed him a video that proves the opportunity for a win was there and it wasn’t botched by Fields. Also, no one is saying the Bears win the (other) game if ESB makes his catch, but it was 4th down and did end any chance the Bears had of winning that game. So clearly Fields wasn’t to blame for everything that went wrong as you guys like to claim.
4) Again, for the slow-learners here. As evidenced by the lack of spending, trading away of best players, lack of draft resources, and lack of NFL quality depth and starters; “winning (with a rookie HC, OC, DC, and 2nd year QB) was not a realistic goal. They were competitive in most games. That was by and large a success given all that they were dealing with.
5) The Franchise is unquestionably better off having gone 3-14 and getting multiple high value draft picks and a legitimate #1 WR rather than having gone a meaningless 7-10 and merely getting the 13th pick to show for it. Only a legitimate moron would argue differently. Purging the roster of bad contracts and saving that coin for years 2 and 3 was unquestionably the right move. Just because there are guys out there with the letter C on their helmet doesn’t mean they can realistically be expected to “win.” Ryan Poles and Matt Nagy were fired for a reason. They lost too much and their roster largely stunk. That can’t be fixed in one off season. Especially when the organization is cash strapped and draft capital deficient. I could easily go on, but should i need to?
