I think we used to call these Alberta Clippers around here.  They're saying it's our coldest temps since 1990.  It won't save me from in-laws though.

IIRC 2012 was notable for winter drought.  We usually get a couple of these types of fronts a season.  This week's is supposed to be very intense but fast moving,  50 today, high of -4 on Thursday, and then back to 50 for Christmas.  Drastic fluctuation is not uncommon but the trees hate it.

That's why I remember 1990.  My first was just born and I returned from a work trip right before Christmas to spend 2 hours with a hair dryer in my crawlspace defrosting pipes.   Unforgettable.

I've driven through and worked in some brutal winter weather; Alberta Clippers, near blizzards, ice storms.
