Struggling is fine and expected. Being unable to do basic NFL QB stuff isn't.

I doubt I’ve ever seen more free shots on a QB than I have this year. And they only throw it 20x a game.

I went and listened to it, Hub was actually positive he can figure it out. That was not enough for the JFC Zealots Parkins and Cover Band Boy.

Hopefully he figures it out. There are 3 more years left on the contract. If he does not figure it out, he will be Mitch Trubisky Part 2.

You haven't watched Bengal games the past couple of years then.

I’ve conceded many times Fields needs to improve in the passing game. But it’s hard to expect him to be highly proficient when they rarely do it. It’s either a RB run, QB run, or 5 step drop (which they can’t block). They need to run more quick hitters and work on the timing stuff.

There are reasons they are not doing that. Yes, the line is one of them. Yes, the receivers are another. And, again, the draft pick out of OSU is another.

I have advocated throwing 50 times a game so the kid can learn. I understand the perils of that. I also understand the perils of him continuing to run the current offense. Cam Newton took a beating and didn't last as long as he could have.

He needs to get better, particularly on the lateral throws. I’d love to see some slants, crossers, and RB/WR screens. They just don’t seem to run many of them. Just 3 step drop stuff where he’s required to get rid of it quickly. I don’t expect him to ever lead the league in snap to release time because that would be negating a skill he is very elite at. But he needs to improve on the short stuff, and he clearly has done so (still room for more improvement), but according to the VeryReasonableMan he’s shown no improvement at all. That’s blatantly false.

He and Cam aren’t directly comparable. Cam was basically a goal line back. They aren’t using Fields quite like that. Fields has actually taken less punishment since he’s been running IMO. But I agree, he can’t/shouldn’t be running 15-18x a game. That’s on the coaches, not him.

It’s also on the coaches when Cole Kmet is on an island against an elite pass rusher.

I don't think that Straw Man said that. He said the Packer game was his best game passing to date.

Point is that Cam was a big man who took a ton of hits, either running or in the pocket, and it shortened his career.

Fran Tarkenton ran around a lot and played like 18 years. In an era where you could do whatever you wanted to a quarterback.

Also; the position is changing. Brady and Stafford aren’t the model anymore.

True, but guys were not as big and fast when Fran Tarkenton was running around as they are now. Cam took a beating. He paid the price for it. Could not throw at the end.

Aren’t Brady and Stafford the last two QBs who won Super Bowls? The only “modern” QB to win a Bowl the last 8-9 seasons was Mahomes. I wouldn’t say that mold is dead just yet.

Sure, if literally everything else is in place you can still win with a highly proficient stationary quarterback. Look how they both did this year.

People have been saying for 20+ years now that dual threat QBs were the way of the future yet traditional QBs have won 8-9 of last 10 Super Bowls. And it’s always the same old story. Guy comes in and runs like crazy and people talk about how he needs to develop as a passer but most of the time they get wrecked before they ever get to that level of development, and the cycle continues. The ones that have succeeded in any kind of longish term way have been the ones that were either complete freaks of nature, were smart enough to not take as many big hits, or both.

I’ve said in this very forum that you have to be able to throw from the pocket when the game is on the line (and that’s why I think Lamar is a slightly flawed quarterback). Can Justin Fields get to the level of Mahomes or Allen? I don’t know. I hope so. Fields and Allen were not dissimilar their 2nd year. People like TheDipshitMan tend to forget that quarterbacks like Allen and Hurts needed some time to develop.
