We really are entering a new era of politics. More information is unearthed, and more information is disseminated through more channels. London Breed has caught a lot of flak in SF, but Willie Brown was re-elected multiple times and that dude was the definition of corrupt machine politics. Oakland had Ron Dellums, how in the living hell was that guy ever put anywhere near that office. DeBlasio, Eric Adams.
When you get down to it, local politics sort of is, find a way to get a little name recognition and a big patron to pump money into your campaign to get on City Council. Most voters don't know anything about any of the candidates, so signs can do the trick. Then if you avoid any major scandals and get your name affiliated with one or two good things that happen, and get the cops behind you, you can be Mayor. All this despite no real qualifications.
Really underscores how bad the Democrats botched this George Santos thing. Imagine if they had figured that out 4 weeks before the election and won that seat, McCarthy would have had a REALLY rough speakership run with one less vote.
I really disliked Newsom as Mayor. Thought he did a mediocre job, and there were way too many personal distractions with his divorce from Don Jr's wife, then he was seen out with sub 21 year old women at parties, then slept with his campaign manager's wife (which came out when she had to mention it as part of her AA/rehab). But when you added it all up, he was a generally competent Mayor compared to so many bozos who gain power in major cities. Then he got to do 8 years under Jerry Brown, learned a lot of policy and nuance to go with his hair and charisma, and boom, he's been a very good Governor. Learning some style, he's ditched his suits and goes around in a stylish fleece with the California bear on it, often a cap over that coiffed hairdo. That outfit screams crisis manager - compare that to DeSantis running around the Ian area with the big yellow boots and fake photo ops.
