He might have, or had, the answers for your questions in life.
Why would think that? People have odd notions about Buddhism. Conflating it with Hinduism is one of those.
I have an annoying relative who always says "Buddha is the fat guy in Chinese Restaurants and you rub his belly for good luck."
I want to retort that paulist Xians seek salvation via a human sacrifice and communal ritual cannibalism, but I am too kind. I guess I should tell him the fat guy is actually Budai, not the Buddha, but I would just get a smartass reply.
Most modern Buddhists actually just go visit the clergy to buy blessings. The Buddhist churches in the west started teaching meditation and martial arts due to demand.
Buddhist meditation has nothing to do with yoga postures. Yoga and Buddhism are different systems with different goals. There has been some cross pollination due to demand in the west.
Examples: The word samadhi in Buddhism simply means concentration, to focus the mind. In yoga samadhi means some kind of supramundane consciousness. In Buddhism, dhyana is a deep state of absorbed concentration with focus on a single object. In yoga, dhyana is preliminary to samadhi.
Yogis twist their bodies like pretzels before learning to meditate. Buddhists simply sit in a comfortable position with a straight back and focus the mind.
