There are myths about this from both sides. It would be nice to get the historical facts straight, but the important thing is where the political parties are today.

Fact: Robert Byrd was never a Grand Wizard, but was a local leader and organizer during the 1940s. He initially opposed civil rights legislation, but became an advocate. 

Fact: While only a few actual official Big D Dixiecrats ever became Republican, and details of southern strategies are contested, conservative southern Democrats began gradually migrating to the Republican Party more than 50 years ago. Others, like Byrd and Albert Gore Sr., moved to the left. Today, the heirs of demographic that opposed civil rights legislation are largely Republican.

I still have some fairly fond memories of Fox News; Tony Snow,  Britt Hume, Megyn Kelly, Shepard Smith.  To an extent Red Eye, Bill O'Reilly, Neil Cavuto,  and Greta Van Susteren. I remember when some thought FNC was going to moderate.  Instead they went all Tucker Carlson and Tomi Lahren.

In a way, Fox News is the tip of the iceberg.
