“You can give up certain products. You could give up pencils. Because under the China policy, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need one or two. They don’t need that many. You always need steel. You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. Two or three is nice. So we’re doing things right.”

Well…it's apparent that the Pencil and Doll Manufacturers of America have not been paying into the Trump Slush Presidential Library Fund.

I remember ranting clear back around 2012 that at some point in time consumer culture is going to have to slow down because we can’t keep making shit we don’t need out of stuff we’re going to run out of.

Being dependent on a foreign adversary that runs a huge trade surplus with us so that we can have umpteen million plastic things we don’t need is absolutely ridiculous. They need us more than we need them.

Trump was spot on.

Dunno about your kid, but my kid goes through a pencil a week, and loses 2 more.
Of course, Trump doesn't know that a lot of work these days requires computers, and those ain't cheap and unless we can maintain lower costs on them, a lot of kids just won't have that access. But they are poor so who cares amirite?

In real dollars, consumer grade computers are cheaper than they’ve ever been. A $600 laptop in 2025 has more computing power than all the computers in the world combined in 1980.

I thought you were a clean energy person? Why do you want us buying petroleum based products we don’t need from China made by burning dirty coal and then shipped it all the way across the Pacific on a boat that uses 2 gallons of diesel to move an inch?

We can make pencils just fine here and always did until very recently.

And in 1980, you didn't need a computer. My High School had six, the CS class had to sign up for time slots.
Now, I can't buy a cup of coffee without a supercomputer.

e.g. the cost of a computer for 99.9999% of the world in 1980 was zero.

Looking at China's latest trade surplus numbers, it appears they don't need us or Europe.

Speaking of clean energy?  I wonder what would create more good paying jobs:  clean energy or pencil manufacturing.

Don't worry, Trump won't let the U.S. get too far behind China in the race to generate the most heat trapping coal plant emissions.

The 2028 Democratic candidate for president should campaign on Closing the Pencil Gap.

Odds are he's doing it himself since he can't stay awake and his hand is always bandaged.

I want the next president to issue an EO, autopen or not, specifying that Trump's official portrait shall be replaced with one of him hugging Jeffrey Epstein.

Soybean association president on Trump farm aid plan: ‘A Band-Aid on an open wound’

Right, it’s just a bridge and not a long term solution. It wasn’t marketed as such.

What they conveniently leave out is that ag markets have been shit since the late fall of 2023. After the artificial commodity runup during the insanity of the pandemic, it has fallen off because supply generally exceeds demand while input prices have remained artificially high. Trying to blame the current state of the farm economy (in a multi year down cycle) on recent tariffs is disingeuous at best. The farm economy is ALWAYS cyclical.

It’s Ragland’s job as president of the soybean association to lobby and generate demand. I know Jenny Ifft (quoted at the end of the article) personally. Was a year ahead of me at UI and is from the US-24 corridor in Illinois. Sharp gal, but who knows the context of the one sentence of hers they used for this hit piece.
