Personally, I'd be willing to bet Democrats wouldn't lose elections if voters thought there were more than a dimes' worth of difference in what the parties do for working class people. Both parties are unpopular for a reason. The Republicans are just better at messaging.
Not quite.
THAT PERSON BAD, HE IS WHY YOUR LIFE SUCKS - isn't "better" messaging, it's just *Easier* messaging.
Good public policy has a lot of nuance to it. It's not easy. It's easy to just say "YOU ARE GETTING SCREWED BY THE OTHER". That works until it doesn't at which point the guillotines come out.
It's fairly common wisdom that a simple and effective investing strategy is to buy an S&P 500 index fund. Some companies will grow, some will wither. In totality, you make a good return, and you say "I made a good investment!" But some of the companies you invested in fell apart. You don't look at your 10% return on the S&P and say "that was a bad investment because Intel is in the crapper!"
The Government makes a bunch of investments, just like an S&P 500 fund, let's say in medical research. Overall, our medical portfolio has improved over time, new drugs, vaccines, surgical procedures. I have had at least 4 orthopedic surgeries that 100 years ago didn't exist and I'd be dead probably. Instead I'm very healthy. But some of that research goes nowhere, hell sometimes we even get it wrong! I used to take Vioxx instead of Advil. Now Vioxx has been removed, over time we found out it had bad side effects.
Unlike the S&P, the media - especially on the right who are run by rich people who don't want to pay taxes - they want people to get angry at every investment the government makes that goes sideways, not the fact that overall we have gotten an excellent return.
