Republicans problem is envy/jealousy. They are scared to death someone might be getting free stuff from their tax dollars..
This really is the heart of it, and I think what the Democrats miss. Not necessarily because they are bad communicators, but maybe they don't understand it.
The GOP has run their whole premise on nobody should get away with anything, period, no matter the cost. And it works.
They have created in the mindset of people that our utility function is to have the lowest amount of waste possible. If we didn't waste this money, we'd have more money. This is a false premise.
A huge chunk of Americans have money in S&P 500 mutual funds. Every year, some of those companies have stock prices that go down. In a Republican mindset, you should take your money out of the S&P and put it in cash. That way, you will make no bad investments. But by doing so, you exclude yourself from more investments which return more money. At the end of the year, you are worse off for being more worried about a few investments that went south than understanding that on the whole, the good investments swamped the bad ones.
