But again we have never consistently made the second weekend except the three years Self was here, when he did it twice.

The guy our court is named after didn't achieve it.

I understand that. But from 2001-2006 we’d reached new heights, and were on the verge of becoming elite, or so we thought. It would have happened had Self stayed. Unfortunately, we all know what happened there.

He's the guy who resurrected the program. Illinois should have buiit on what he did. Illinois was close to doing that...until Weber fucked everything up.

Why would it matter that Lou 'resurrected the program', but not Underwood?

Who are these experts and how many The Twitter followers do they have?

https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2022-02-08/mens-college-basketball-rankings-top-10-mens-basketball-national-title?amp

I know you posted this tongue in cheek, but I’ll answer anyway. Andy Katz, almost a half-million.

Having a top college analyst list us #2 in title contenders the year after losing Ayo is a huge step up from our recent past.

Why'd you mention the Lou years then?

Basically what it comes down to is:  your standard for what a regular Illinois season should look like is better than we've pretty much ever been.  We have never been a program where not making the second weekend is an anomaly, ever.

Not taking sides in this.
Underwood has done some good things.
I am not a huge fan but do give him credit.
He is a decent P5 coach. A solid B- or C+ guy.

The quote above is important. We have not ever been a consistent BB powerhouse except in our own mind.
We were getting in the conversation a little bit with Lou and Self, but really we have been just historically a pretty good program.

There are no regular S16s or several EEs and FFs in last 40 years.

What I am worried about is just how much bad the Big Ten is at masking what our true identity is.  Illinois has done little to nothing outside of our own conference.  All of our impressive feats are being heralded by what we do in Conference play.  A conference of which is unquestionably down and has been for a few seasons.

Most of the things I like about Underwood take place on the defensive end of the floor.  He has been as good or better than anyone we have had in the past in that department, but the offense is scary.  We run absolutely nothing outside of pick and roll and three man weave.  Its either throw it in to Kofi or dribble dribble shoot a contested three.

And with a team that has a small amount of room for error that is not a good recipe for success in post season play.

I thought Underwood’s post game press conference was too happy and too much of “we’re still good,we just had an off night.  We’re still best ball screen defense in the league.  Even NBA plays great defense and guys make shots”

Too many excuses.  You get blown out with no answers don’t just say “we’re still good” that’s loser talk

Sorry to be a negative Nancy, but I just don't see us making a deep run in the tourney. We can't win the big games (purdue and Arizona). I am really getting sick of these long scoring droughts in games. It's frustrating. Is it too much to ask to play 40 minutes of basketball?

Agree.  People thinking this team was better than last year are delusional.

And scoring droughts will happen if Kofi is neutralized bc we don’t run anything that gets us easy shots or drives to the basket.  We are an iso Jump Shooting team.  Miller/Ayo could drive to the basket last year or get to the line.  Grandison, Plummer, Trent, Damonte are all just spot up 3 pt shooters

Lol the Big Ten has been “down for a few years?” WTF games are you watching. When is the last time we’ve seen programs like Iowa and Purdue in the top 5? Michigan has been really good. MSU is always tough. Ohio State and Wisconsin are always solid. We haven’t lost an ACC/Big Ten challenge in 5 years. WTF are you talking about?

The good news is unless we fall to an 8/9 seed we won't see Arizona or Purdue types until the S16 or later, and we've played pretty well against other likely tournament teams in Iowa, Indiana, MSU, and Wisconsin.

Iowa and Indiana are both trash.

Your comments on offense I don’t disagree with. There’s no scripted easy baskets. It’s just toss it in to Kofi or lob up a 3, or Belo does what Belo does. There’s not much rhythm to our offense.

Iowa and Indiana are both trash.

News flash: most teams outside the top 25 are “trash.”

Yet 64 teams make the tourney.

You deserve Weber.

You deserve a lifetime of John Groce. Or Lovie Smith. That’s what you deserve.

Your history of being a coach apologist is long here.

And facts are Bruce Weber took K State further in the NCAA tourney than Underwood likely ever will.

Chew on those apples

If Underwood is here any length of time, I’d probably take that bet.

The timing of the 1966 slush fund scandal did irreversible damage on top of the self inflicted intetnal damage before and after. Boomers were coming of age, basketball was increasing in popularity, and we had a loaded roster.
