No. It should be an anomoly NOT to make the second weekend for Illinois basketball.

When has that ever been true?

We did it 0 times in the 2010s, 4 times in the 2000s, 0 times in the 1990s, 4 times in the 1980s.

That has literally never, ever been the case for Illinois basketball.

That's untrue. I specifically mentioned the Lou years. You are not going to get away with the stuff you pull with Spark with me, Tempo.

Lou Henson made the second weekend of the NCAA tournament 4 times in 21 seasons.  He also lost in the first round to a lower seeded teams 4 times.

We put his name on the court.

It was Austin-Peay-level bad. Completely wasted Ayo's last year. But Illinois is better off without him....

And a year later, without him, there are still experts saying this team is a national title contender. That’s a great thing.

Agreed. It was HORRIBLE. But all things considered, Underwood is doing a bang up job here. He’s literally resurrected this program from the dead. I had actually given up hope of ever being in the conversation for 1 seeds. That’s how bad it was.

I’d go as fas to say that the Loyola loss was the worst in Illini history. But overall, Underwood’s results have been excellent the last three years, and his recruiting is good if not stellar. I’m willing to let this play out before getting all over the top dramatic.

I am cool with this take. I'm glad to have resurrected the old "Tempo34...."

There was plenty of kvetching about Lou's tourney coaching back in the day as well.

I’m the same guy I’ve always been. Calling balls and strikes as they’re pitched.

Who are these experts and how many The Twitter followers do they have?

You are supposed to wait until the ball crosses the plate....

There was plenty of kvetching about Lou's tourney coaching back in the day as well.

Why'd you mention the Lou years then?

Basically what it comes down to is:  your standard for what a regular Illinois season should look like is better than we've pretty much ever been.  We have never been a program where not making the second weekend is an anomaly, ever.

I honestly borderline hated Lou when he was here. It wasn’t until he was gone that I appreciated what he did. Having said that, pre-2010 that was the expectation. Anything worse than 4/5 seeds and 2nd weekend was a disappointment.

I’ll wait if and until Underwood wets the bed again in the tourney to bemoan the results.

I said I remembered them. Making the tourney should be a given. Getting to the second weekend should be standard. Losing to Austin-Peay and Loyola should be anomolies.

But again we have never consistently made the second weekend except the three years Self was here, when he did it twice.

The guy our court is named after didn't achieve it.

2005-2006 I’d have agreed with that take. Just winning a game in the NCAAs wasn’t enough. We’ve only been back near the mountain-top for one year. I’m gonna tap the brakes on where “I think” we should be at this moment.
