This was a carefully crafted very sloppy gambit. Slotkin, Rubio, Burgum - they didn't resign their current jobs pending confirmation. Just Gaetz. Who coincidentally had an ethics report on its way to be released, and then Mike Johnson says "we are closing the investigation since he's no longer in congress". But the GOP Senators can make a show of "we will need to look into this during a fair and open hearing" then Gaetz "withdraws" and the attempt to put the whole mess under the rug commences.

Rick Wilson - a sniveling weasel himself - says "This guy was a BAD dude. He did a lot of really crazy, bad, abnormal stuff"

It's so normalized that the lawyer for one of the hookers says "My client was walking past the pool and witnessed Mr Gaetz having sex with her friend, who was a minor at the time". OK, having sex with a minor is illegal, but it's so bizarro just glossing by a US Congressman at some party where he's just having sex with some woman out in the open, no matter her age.

Ref my other comment, I don't think this was about Gaetz being AG, it was about the best plan they have to try to bury the report on his canoodling, get him out of congress to kill the report but not actually have a confirmation hearing where witnesses will appear.

By nominating someone as unqualified, corrupt and unpopular as Gaetz, Trump was making a power move: "I can do whatever I want, and your aren't going to do a thing about it."  The response from a small number of Republican senators was simply, "Wrong."  It remains to be seen exactly where the line will be drawn, but it's pretty clear that the line exists.
