I hate to say it but it is pretty easy to game plan for a 6’ guy who really can’t create his own shot, especially since we don’t seem to have designed plays to get him clean looks.
With Curbelo and Frazier out he’s going to get a lot of opportunity, but I don’t expect him to continue to play at this level with consistency.
I get it. You don't think much of him. You want longer wings who can slash and get to the hole. You always want an idealized Baylor constructed roster. But even their title team had a rotation of four guards all 6'3" or smaller taking a butt load of threes and a 6'5" guy at the 4. What Baylor did do is play great very tough hard nosed defense at all slots and shoot the ball like a bitch.
Unless somebody develops for us we don't have any true get their own guys. Hawkins or Hutch might down the road. The frosh are not athletic enough. Damonte and Grandison are mechanical. Trent never has been able to. Curbelo is out of control too much, but really attacks to pass- not score.
Somehow or other Plummer has gotten 26 looks from 3 in last three games. If it was so easy to stop him they would have. He doesn't need much room or time. He gets into his textbook one motion shot quickly with a rhythm dip and has a fairly quick release.
He is already into his shooting motion while he is catching and turning in one motion off of curls. This guy probably has the best pure shooting form and feet positioning we have seen here in years. He has range it appears out to 25 feet.
Yes, he is one dimensional as fuck. But, the game is won by who scores the most points. They have to plan for him and that helps create space and time for others.
News Alert- We don't have
anyone else who can really create their own shot off the dribble. Curbelo kind of, but too many are circus attempts. And in case you missed last season- we really didn't then either except for Ayo versus weaker defenders.
Good defenders shut him down in half court. Great guy in open court without question.
Feliz was last guy who could actually reliably create his own in half court.
Of course Plummer is not going to hit 6 or 7 threes a game. Of course he will have some games where he is 1-7.
Followed up by a game where he goes 5-8. Would be nice if these kind of guys could go 3/8 every game.
But he certainly could average 2.5 to 3 a game if given enough minutes and shots. He made 2.6 per game last year.
He shot 40% from three at Utah over 2 years in a P5 conference that made the BT look silly last March.
I would say 11-12 ppg avg is very reasonable goal. This is an experienced proven P5 scorer.
He is now averaging 12.6 ppg for us. He went for 13.6 ppg last year.
