Oregon State wasn't even a tournament team last year until they won the Pac12 tourney. They were 14-12 (10-10) in the regular season, not like they were world beaters. They got hot at the right time.

I feel like playing in a weak conference hurts Gonzaga in the tourney. I think there’s something to be said for having no breathers in conference play. Have an off night in the B1G and you’re probably going to get beaten.

I’d argue it helps them for the fact they’re not all beat up come tourney time and can experiment with a lot of different things (offenses, lineups, defenses, etc..) throughout the season without fear of losing a game. Occasionally you’ll get a St. Mary’s type of upset, but those are rare.

Edit- then having that high seed in the tourney makes it MUCH easier to have the success they’ve had the last six years. I know, here comes the Illini-Loyola jab, but more often than not that’s an outlier.

There are pros and cons of being in that conference. St. Mary's is usually tough, same with BYU. San Francisco is having a good year. The rest of the conference is blah. So, they only have 6 tough conference games, some years just 4. It's a double edged sword for them. Gotta have talented players and coach to have success there.
