I feel like playing in a weak conference hurts Gonzaga in the tourney. I think there’s something to be said for having no breathers in conference play. Have an off night in the B1G and you’re probably going to get beaten.
I’d argue it helps them for the fact they’re not all beat up come tourney time and can experiment with a lot of different things (offenses, lineups, defenses, etc..) throughout the season without fear of losing a game. Occasionally you’ll get a St. Mary’s type of upset, but those are rare.
Edit- then having that high seed in the tourney makes it MUCH easier to have the success they’ve had the last six years. I know, here comes the Illini-Loyola jab, but more often than not that’s an outlier.
