I meant is it someone connected to Illinois. You know how the system works. People are not donating to the endowment or scholarship fund for the greater good of developing  upstanding young men and women.

There are plenty of other kids on the roster also. Who's funding them ?
Fears has 21 offers. Do a bunch of donors from different schools pool their backing, or is/are there a donor/donors from just one school and everybody else is in it for show ?
Recruiting is shady. If Fears goes somewhere else, it will be said that school was behind it all.

No guarantees for any donor and the affiliated schools is my guess. I would think that beyond ante up donors to a LaLu or an AAU team to stay in the game- the larger donors do not get called unless there is real chance to land a kid. Of course there is the shoe money shit always in the background connected to different AAU teams and their schools.
There is also the possibility of benefits flowing via other avenues to and through the AAU team and then the recruit's people eventually benefit as procees moves along.
Again- no guarantees there either. Kids verbal and back out all day. There can kind of be an initiation fee to even allow real or full access to the kid/family to talk or to do unofficial visit depending on how far it gets and what the various demands are.
And it depends on the recruit. Most are probably not really dirty processes. Minimal stuff happens - AAU Team/program support in general for expenses and travel, etc.

The top 50 have a lot of weird shit going on though is my belief. And it mostly is unregulated unless somebody does something really direct and stupid.
Been like this for very long time and the maneuvering to stay ahead of any scrutiny changes. Nobody likes it, but it is the way of the world.

Hmmm. What donor is funding the ride at LaLu is the question. $50K a year.

I doubt any of the basketball players there have to pay tuition or that it’s even billed to anyone

They are playing the same game the in state Catholic schools do. Have waiver for athletes

It's not a waiver for athletes.  It's "hardship" financial aid.

These fucks have approximately 75-100 of these to use for football and basketball players.  They fill out hardship paperwork, and get in the school.  That's how they can recruit.

They're not actually, on the record, telling them that they are coming to play basketball.  Or football.  Or whatever.  They're getting a hardship scholarship.

They have both need based and merit based financial aid. I am betting athletes are more likely to receive need based aid. I am guessing merit based aid is not necessarily academic based. Perhaps it could be based on musical, artistic, athletic, or other special talent?

LaLu looks like a really nice campus and school, and has been around for 60 years.
I agree that the elite basketball players there likely pay little to nothing and receive major scholarship aide. I am guessing that type of opportunity is limited to future players in high revenue college sports and not the girls lacrosse team.
In the end, somebody foots the bill as the school isn't giving it away. I am sure there are a lot of creative gifts made to support the athletic program and a lot of behind the scenes steering.
One would guess in a place like that, there are some comparable opportunities for highly gifted students in other fields of interest.

Some of these prep schools with basketball powerhouses, however, barely resemble a real high school and they have to do unusual maneuvers and affiliations to meet basic scholastic accreditation.
Findlay Prep (DJ Richardson) was started by a car dealership guy. It closed its actual high school years ago and the players continued to live in dorm type thing I believe, and were loosely affiliated with some other school for classwork.
They shut down for good a couple years ago.

Credible source implies Illinois could probably close the deal with Jeremy Fears deal now, but prefer to wait. Indicates they are still recruiting Fears, but  he is their third choice for a  '23 pg.

There are concerns about his shot. The other two are better shooters.

Also, chatter he or his family might want guaranteed playing time / starting position.

Fears to Michigan State. He would’ve committed here it appears, but there was speculation that he and his entourage wanted some guarantees to playing time, starting, etc… that Underwood and staff weren’t willing to do. It sucks losing him, but I wouldn’t make them either, especially if the staff knows Curbelo is likely gonna be here. So 🤷🏻‍♂️

Probably didn’t want to deal another Adam Miller/Mark Smith situation again. Not really heartbroken over losing Fears if his camp was making all kind of demands like that.

I’d much rather have Kylan Boswell barring any drama. Might be a long shot, but he’s from ECI. He’s higher rated.

http://www.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/243163/kylan-boswell

Also Fears younger brother is better and a possibility because Curbelo might be gone by then. Again as long as there’s no drama. That seems to be a theme regarding almost all recruits these days though lol.

They like Dai Dai Ames too. Not as highly rated, but can shoot. Good fit with Epps and Harris.

It will be interesting to see if Izzo guaranteed time? If not, then the Fears choice may just have come down between powers in B1G.

MSU - Good Program, high level of play longterm/good to great recruitment/NCAA selections-progress/HOF Coach
ILL - Good Program, high level of play recently/above average recent recruitment/recent NCAA selections/Coach?

HOF coach and program consistancy may have been the only 2 denominations here....doubt IZZO promised anything though...so if not, and neither team promised then why not choose MSU over ILLINI?

I like what BU and Frazier have been doing so far and I think Sincere will be a great get for us....similiar to Head. Luther not Crandell.
