At that time, some of the names being bandied about didn’t have have college coaching experience.
"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly recalled to The Times. Kelly said he would usually quash the conversation by saying "nothing (Hitler) did, you could argue, was good," but that Trump would occasionally bring up the topic again.

I feel terrible for all the straw men who are likely to be *pummeled* if this thread continues to move forward.

John Groce was near the bottom of everyone’s wish list. And he’d just taken Ohio within a whisker knocking off #1 UNC to go an E8. Theus was a full tier below the bottom of the wishlist.

John Groce’s period of time here was the definition of mediocrity. But his record looks good compared to Theus. So I don’t buy the “Would have recruited well and played a fun style.” (Which is what we always say about black coaches, of course)

But we probably would have been funny bad.

Yeah, but the idea here that I “wanted” Theus isn’t true. I merely said at the time if we’re going to throw a dart on someone largely unproven, give me Theus. Plus, it also seemed you were using that as a dig. Which you clearly were. Which is fine. It’s been the MO for like 10 years.

Just because you were AOTC on the Mack trade does not mean you have won them all. No one ever does.

Is predicting something won’t work out well for the Bears even AOTC worthy?

There were MANY who ended up veering off the curve in that thread. MiniDitka even had an artist's rendition.

Maybe we should all fluff Tempo for a while, just to see what happens.

We weren’t “funny bad” under Groce?

I’m not saying Theus would have been good here, but I’m not sure Cal St-Northridge is a place many people will be successful. I don’t think Cal St N to Illinois is a good barometer to measure by. Bruce Weber was a fantastic midmajor coach (at a level higher that Northridge). Doesn’t translate into “high major” success. And again, I never ever once “beat the drum” for Theus, just said if we’re going to go for the desperation hire, he’d have as good a chance as any. Huge difference between that and actually “wanting” him hired.

Again, Cal St Northridge to Illinois is not an apples to apples comparison. Theus’ record at NM St. is a more legitimate comparison.

Anyone know why Theus left NM after only two years? Probably a shithole place to live for a guy used to big city life, but I honestly have no idea. His 2nd year at NM State was a good one.
