There are basically 2 demographics in the Bay Area at this point
1) Can't afford to live here, considering leaving to find a place that is affordable
2) Can afford to live here. Considering leaving to retire like a king.
McDonald's has a sign starting at $18/hour. If you have some sort of residual housing situation - long term ownership, benevolent landlord, rent control, parent's basement - you can save up some serious scratch, because while things like gas and food are a little more expensive here, they aren't well over double what they are in the rest of the country.
When Sander's talks about income inequality, he means between high earners and low earners, but the inequality between the economies in places like SF/NY/LA and the rest of the country is becoming a pretty gnarly issue.
