Having Kofi is great for winning a bunch of games in the B1G and then losing in the tourney to a team that can exploit the very weaknesses that keep him from being an NBA draft pick.

It just doesn’t matter if he can go for 20 and 10 every night with a ton of awesome dunks when he can’t pass out of the post effectively and can’t guard anyone mobile. His presence also necessitates a slowdown in both the half court and transition because so much of the offense runs though him.

I said it all of last season: Of the better teams in the nation, Illinois had one of the most traditionally constructed rosters.

If Illinois wants to compete for Final Fours/National titles we need elite guard play/three point shooting and mobile athletic bigs who can guard multiple positions without switching, protect the rim, rim run, and rebound to get the guards in a position to score in transition.

And at least one of them needs to be able to stretch the defense with the ability to shoot from deep. Giorgi and Kofi just weren’t those guys. Grandison could but he’s a liability in other areas. He’s a below the rim 3 playing the 4.

If we could add Garcia, we’d have Hawkins, Garcia, and Payne filling the roles of Kofi and  Giorgi. And Grandison is back. Our guard play should be good to great next year but lack of length will be a problem unless the lengthy freshmen step up.

The key to the season might be getting something out of Hutcherson on the wing to help that out a little.

With Garcia next year’s team may not win as many games in the B1G, but would certainly have the ingredients for a deep tourney run.

I fucking loved watching Kofi play basketball for Illinois, but our blueprint should be what Baylor put on the floor this past year. I’m all in favor in continuing to move in that direction.
All good points, but:
1. I would like our tournament chances better with Kofi and a high seed than without Kofi and a 7 seed.

2. Kofi improved a ton from freshman to sophomore year, who’s to say he wouldn’t improve a lot the next year too? He doesn’t need to pull a 20’ jumper range out of his ass, he just needs to learn how to find the open shooter when he gets doubled.

If Kofi goes to Kentucky then I hope he is prepared to show Calipari that he can defend the perimeter and pass out of double teams (or just pass in general), as well as run up and down at a higher pace than Illinois did.
Also competing with Oscar Tshiebwe would be a little more difficult than Omar Payne in my opinion.
Furthermore, Calipari usually plays 8 men at least, so his minutes would be cut on top of that.

But he can do what he wants, it is 2021, not 2001. Loyalty means nothing anymore.

I would much rather win the big ten and big ten tournament than have a sweet 16 run

The COVID has rotted your mind.

Chester Fraxier has his first 4 star top 150 recruit. Sencire Harris is currently 59 on rivals, 93 on 247, and 109 on 247 composite. Listed 6-3 160 combo guard.

Drat ......
So much for Theus getting that 3rd coaching spot.

Ex-NBA star Reggie Theus to be named men's basketball coach and athletic director at HBCU Bethune-Cookman University next week, source to @TheUndefeated.

He was in top 50 and now out of top 100. Not sure why, but it is decent get anyway for this staff. They need to try and get top 150 kids and hope for the best.

We really need somebody to play PG in 22.
Curbelo is gone if he has a good year.

Notwithstanding whether he'd be good here, that is a great get for an HBCU.

Frazier is already paying dividends for us, I believe he was a very good hire (based on what we needed/and where we were at), and Harris will be a star in the making for us. He already has a very smooth feel to his game/lefty can create and finish with both hands, and also is very explosive when attacking the rim (Nunn like imo) with better hops.

Nunn was RSCI 57 and has the athleticism to be a productive starter in the NBA. This kid will come in with 4 guys ahead of him.
Might contribute down the road. Hope he does. I would be concerned as to why his ranking keeps dropping. Not saying he can't play at this level but to declare he is star in the making is just stupid. We get it, you think Chet is the best and if he shows up for work you will tell us he is amazing.

You take a bunch of top 150-200 guys and some turn out to be a P5 starter or contributor.  Many don't. Hardly any make the NBA. Its not a bad approach and what is likely available to us moving forward. We can be decent.

Let's see him play a game before you declare he is a star.

Interesting.

"I'm pretty much open. There's a possibility I return to Illinois and a possibility I don't," he told ESPN. "I want to make a quick decision as soon as possible. I don't want to go back and forth. I'm going to take some visits, but I'm not sure where."

"He's the reason I went to Illinois," Cockburn said of Antigua. "When he left along with Chin Coleman, I decided to go in the portal to leave my options open.

"Kentucky? It's a serious option. Antigua is my guy. I'm going to consider them, but there a lot of schools. I wasn't really focused on that while I was in the NBA draft. Now I can take my time and evaluate it better."

I was pretty sure Kofi was coming back to college. The Kentucky thing has me worried though.

BU had better come up with a game plan to pitch to Kofi to get him more midrange opportunities.

The last time someone transfered after getting all American honors at their school has to be 20 + years. I might be wrong, but I can't think of the last time it happened.

Article says over 25 years, but I don't know who that would have been.

Dunno. I didn't think he would if his long term goal is to develop for an NBA job somewhere.
Hope it all works out. Imposing college player. Needs a shit ton of work to play in the league.
