For those of you who didn't expect this, is there an Illini win, in any sport, that was this surprising ?

I gotta admit I did not expect this at all. I assume we'd lose and just hoped it would be competitive. Especially without Ayo. Man, I am so impressed with the guys right now.   #1 seed locked in.

The football win over Wisconsin a few years ago. That was a bad team that beat a great team.. This is a great team that beat another great team.

Maybe the 2004 beat down of #1 Wake Forest and Chris Paul?

If you told me before the game that our walkons would be in late because we're up by almost 30, I'd have laughed in your face.

Who in the sam fucking hill could have predicted this?

Guys stepping up in these games without Ayo makes this a much more dangerous team.

The Michigan State game that year also impressive.  I think we scored on like 16 straight possessions at one point in the game.  We didn't beat them as much as we did Wake Forest, but MSU was better that year than Wake.

Those were good, but we just dominated #2, without Ayo.
If we would have done it with Ayo, I can see that.

Cant argue that. I was just trying to think of a result that shocked and delighted me at the time.

Wow. Best defensive performance by an Illinois team in memory.
Did not see this coming at all.

I just had a calm feeling about this game. Maybe because I knew if we lost it wasn’t a big deal. But I also felt Michigan hadn’t really played a team of our overall caliber that has a legit big man to neutralize Dickinson and their offensive/rebounding attacks on the glass.

As has been discussed before the absence of Ayo has allowed other guys to step up and shine. In these situations sometimes guys step up and sometimes they don’t. We’ve seen no fewer than 4 individuals elevate their respective games since the MSU debacle.

We definitely don’t seem as stagnant in the half court as we did with everyone deferring to Ayo. We know at times that we tend to play down to our competition and I’m left to wonder if the deference hasn’t been the primary reason for that.

The game plan tonight was fantastic. The Illini took them out of everything they wanted to do defensively. We attacked the basket and got whatever we wanted on the offensive end.

I was convinced they were going to make a run between the 15 and 10 min mark but the defense actually seemed to ratchet up another level at that point. Forced them into a ton of bad shots and contested everything at the rim and did so mostly without fouling.

Some fantastic individual performances but most importantly just a complete team ass-kicking. With COVID and the weird schedule imbalances and playing fewer games than normal it seems somewhat surreal. Regardless I am trying really hard to soak all this in...because having growing up in the 80s and attending UI in the early 00s I took being respectable for granted.

When you have all your starters and they play well, there's always a chance.

Tonight is why we put up with the misery.
