Should be a good test for both teams.

Sounds like Frederick might be out or limited. He is really solid player and one of few guys who guards.
They were out of sorts in their loss without him, but have had a week to practice with using others in his place.
We will not be able to stay in front of Toussaint who is quicker than anybody we have if he plays more, and the younger McCaffery, Murray, and Nunge are a problem if they go bigger as matchup issues.
I have watched them a lot this year.
They have a really versatile offense, score in bunches, deeper bench than us, can shoot quickly or run solid half court sets, and will present various matchup issues for us.
Weiskamp and Bohannon are a threat to go off for stretches. Bohannon will shoot crossing half court if he starts feeling it.

On the other hand- they are not that athletic oddly.
They cannot guard an empty chair, but do not seem to care much.
I do not think they can stay in front of Ayo in open or half court at all. I expect him to have a big game against their defense, especially without Frederick to rotate on him sometimes.
Garza will also get high 20s or more. Slow as shit, but relentless worker and great footwork and can pull Kofi out on floor at will or work him over in the post.
Kofi could get in foul trouble if not careful and could get frustration fouls if he doesn't realize Garza is going to get his no matter what.
If Kofi gets 2 early fouls we are in trouble. If he stays in game, we are in it. He could make a living on offensive glass in this one.

They play some zone and have issues rebounding in it.
If we are hitting threes at reasonable rate (like 35% or more and will need 8 or 9 of them), we make them work on offense, and get offensive rebounds we can win.

Fran and Connor McCaffery will bitch a lot about every call. I think it could get nasty, but we need to get pushed. We have to get tougher.

I think a game in mid 80s and too close to call.

I don't like this match up at all.  Figure we will be near double digit underdogs.  -8 or -9 Iowa.

Bohannan coming off his worst career performance leading Iowa's worst 15 minutes of basketball in the last 2 years I feel will not bode well for us. I do agree their defense is pathetic, but Iowa leads the country in Pomeroy offensive efficiency.  Fran won't let that carry over into tomorrows game.

Ayo should without question be this teams best defensive player and unfortunately is not even close.  He has been lit up on the defensive end multiple times this year.  A kid with his length, quickness, and intelligence should be dominating the perimeter on the defensive end.  I may have unpopular opinion that he's only going 75-80% on the defensive end, only to then turn it up on the offensive end of the floor.  I know this because far too many times when we are behind and the game is coming down to the wire do then see him turn it up on the defensive end.   Just wish he would do it for a full 40 minutes.

I don’t really subscribe to the idea that playing a bad half of basketball means a team is going to come out and play better basketball in the next game. Guards missing tons of shots doesn’t have much to do with motivation. In my world they got exposed a little and maybe with a week+ to prepare we can exploit their weaknesses as well.

Also I don’t think Ayo is particularly quick or athletic. He’s smart, lengthy, crafty, and is great in transition. I do think he conserves energy at times and it feels like this entire team plays every game to try and win it at the end. Maybe because that’s what happened so often last year. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This team ranks pretty solid defensively although it may not pass the eye test at times. I really think and I’ve said it before that the new rule changes and officiating are starting to change the way the game is played. We were used to watching all these godawful rock fights for years and now we are seeing transition and scoring.

I’m more concerned about the offensive end where we stagnate for long periods. Teams have learned they can take away Ayo’s right hand and really limit him. Need more from Trent in particular going forward with continued improvement from Miller and Curbelo to do what he does but just play within himself a hair more.

I really don’t have the greatest feeling about tomorrow’s game...Iowa is the kind of team where if we come out flat we will get our doors blown off. Both games last year were intense and I expect this to be no different. Probably be at least one technical and one flagrant and lots of shit being talked. I really hope the defensive game plan is to not double Garza except for some quick digs and make damn sure we don’t let them kill us from deep. Kofi has to play smart and we need the zebras to remember we are in Champaign.

All accurate points above by both ^^^^^^.

Garza can pass out of doubles. Is high IQ player.
On offense he is an Ethan Happ with an arsenal of inside moves, with a legit jumper out to three point range. Kid can shoot.
Your basic nightmare at the college level. Too slow and not athletic enough to be big factor in NBA (looks like late first or mid second round), but very very good college player.
Not sure there is any good option, but I kind of prefer some doubles to make him think and work for his points.

It helps that Frederick might be out. That gives them one less legit 3 point guy.

We don't have an individual lock down defender, or very good team defense. Agree we seem to not turn it up very often.

Will be interesting.

I wonder if the NBA will get so positionless that it opens the door for someone big and highly skilled but not particularly athletic to become a force again?

I also find it interesting that Brad Underwood talked a lot about positionless basketball and then constructed one of the most traditional rosters in the country.

It kind of seems that the NBA has moved to more postionless as the big men have become more versatile, athletic, and able to shoot from out.
It is why Happ cannot break into a roster spot. Just cannot shoot from out and not athletic enough. These guys in NBA are freak athletes.

It is why Kofi will have trouble finding a spot. He is athletic, but not very good footwork or quickness guarding in space, and cannot shoot at all from out.
NBA teams are now averaging 35 attempted threes a game (a record) and hitting them at 36.5% clip which is near record high, and 12.8 makes per game which is a record.
The overall NBA eFG % is .532 and the highest it has ever been as we speak.

You have to hit the three to play in NBA.

 8)  (-2) Illini. O/U-161.  I still see us falling something like 90-82.  I'd imagine a lot fouls called this game given the history.  Refs will be blowing a quick whistle.  Kofi needs to stay out of foul trouble.  Need both Miller and Frazier hitting their jumpers to help open up that lane.
