I think we absolutely should have beat Missouri. Losing that coin flip may have been the difference in that one. I expected to lose the Baylor game and today’s game. We do not match up well with either team.

When the rankings come out tomorrow, our losses will be to three undefeated top 15 teams, two of them on the road (by three points each) and one neutral site game to the #1b team in the country.

I think this ends up being a lot like the 2001 team (or a lot of MSU teams) that racks up more losses than elite teams typically do due to a brutal schedule

I was just gonna say that hopefully this helps us when it really counts. Much like the Michigan State teams of the past. They usually learned from it and it made them better in March. Let’s hope it goes that way for us.
Because FOX News told me so…

It was a fun game to watch.
Rutgers plays like grownass men.

Need to watch film of that game to teach our guys what toughness looks like.
They got a buttload of second chances and points on hustle, tipped balls kept alive, and blocking out so others could make a play.
They had 15 Offensive rebounds, 8 steals. and 8 blocks.
We had 10/4/0.

Again- we also get our ass handed to us on the X's and O's.
They were a nightmare last year also.

They are simply tougher and better coached.

We actually played better than we did in the Duke game. Duke was absymal.

Rutgers is good. We have a lot of work to do.

We shot 54% from the field and 60% on 3’s. Making 9 threes for the game and still got beat. Rebounding, defense, and FT’s cost us. Pretty incredible we lose a game shooting that well.

Rutgers had 15 offensive rebounds. Kofi and Giorgi were under the basket just watching a Rutgers player swoop in and grab the ball for a putback. That just can't happen.

The BS flagrant on the punchable flopping white kid completely changed the game.

That being said, we simply got outhustled and outplayed in the 2nd half.

Oh well..back to the Bears.
That kid has the formula figured out perfectly.

1. Be white. This is essential. Seriously, if you’re any other race, you can just stop right here.

2. Wear a headband. Not essential, but very helpful, because it will make you look “hard working” to old white guys like referees.

3. Throw your body around as recklessly as possible. The headband will help make sure you aren’t called for fouls yourself.

4. Flail your arms wildly any time you feel contact above the waist.

5. Be rewarded with free throws.

I think Underwood is still trying to dial in a system for this team and it’s flaws and strengths. We’ve got new pieces playing big minutes against high caliber competition. I thought this was a good chess match.

Illini came out and punched them in the mouth.

Rutgers tightened up the D, we picked up some cheap fouls, they make a run when we had Miller out there which was like playing 4 on 5.

Things kind of evened out for a stretch til we hit our customary second half coma for a few minutes.

Brad adjusted with the zone looks and threw them out of rhythm. He had Ayo bring the ball up and initiate the offense from the middle of the floor and we got back in it.

And give them a lot of credit because they hit big shot after big shot down the stretch against pretty good fundamental defense when we were making our push.

We started fouling fairly early which was probably was a good strategy given their struggles at the line, but they made their FTs.

Ron Harper JR is a beast.

This made my day. That kid was basically an amalgam of Aaron Craft, Jon Scheyer and Grayson Allen with a headband on.

Rutgers shot 39 free throws and made them at a 69% clip compared to their normal abysmal 56%. FT defense was a real letdown. Illini shot 15 free throws.

It wasn’t even really the free throw disparity that stands out, but how some very ticky tack fouls completely changed the way our guards could play defensively. That’s what I hate about inconsistent foul calls because it fundamentally disrupts the entire game. You have to expect to overcome some home cooking to win on the road in the B1G but I thought today was a little much.

I watched that flagrant play over and over again and I still didn’t see where Williams actually made contact in a way that could have possibly elicited that kind of natural reaction. Mulcahey to his credit scripted that out from the moment he was warned. He threw his head back and stood up and looked at the ref and touched his mouth in feigned disbelief like a little kid trying to get his brother in trouble. But give credit to him for crafting it and then selling it.

Last year DMW Griffin Feliz and Ayo crashed the glass hard from the guard position. This year especially when Kofi and GB are in at the same time I think we are relying on them to get the boards while the guards drop back to set up on D. Which is good if we can pull it off because it limits transition opportunities for the opponent but GB has never been a good rebounder and Kofi isn’t quick. We got out-quicked to a lot of those rebounds.

We miss Griffin and Feliz more than we realize here. I would like to see DMW start crashing the boards more like he did last year but again that takes away one of our best defenders in the transition game if we don’t get the rebound.

Plenty of things to work on that’s for sure.

The mizzou game and this game - the officiating drove me nuts. I fucking HATE when the officials call everything. It totally ruins the game and makes it frustrating to watch. Missouri game there was 51 fouls- ridiculous. Let them play

The zone was a disaster. We clearly do not practice it much. They just did a little screen on top and had their way.

They pretty much owned us after late in first half. I wouldn't say I ever thought we were back in it or would win after they got up about 6-8 points midway in second half.

The only match up we had any advantage over them was Kofi versus the skinny freshman center.
Miles Johnson handled Kofi easily.

Yeah- Harper is a man at this level. Great stroke and a beast driving.

WTF  is with Adam Miller? He is a mess. Underdog on his ass a lot and he saw a lot of pine.
This better not turn into a Mark Smith thing.

We were down double digits when we went to the zone. They made two defended threes and a 17’ jumper against it, but it also created some confusion and bad shots that we converted into transition points that cut the lead down 3 or 4 with plenty of time left. I think DMW made a three to make it a 3(?) point game with over a minute to go?

The back breaker was Adam Miller taking an ill-advised three with a man in his face before we even got in a position to rebound. RHJ got the rebound, was fouled by Ayo, and knocked down his FTs. After that we very nearly turned them over with the pressure D which very likely would have made it a one possession game with some time on the clock.

DMW's last three made it 6 with 1:36 to go.
Agree we kept plugging away but never were closer than 2 possessions after the 9:30 mark.
They were in control. The last three was meaningless.
The zone was different look, but I thought it was out of desperation to keep guys on the floor and to not have to play Miller who is in danger of being in the Mark Smith dog house.
