For every extra 3 made, that’s a guaranteed extra 3 points. For every extra FT made, that’s (being very very very generous on the very high side) an extra 1.67ish points. 3 > 1.67, so yeah, 3 point shooting was the bigger problem.

If you are putting up bad 3s because you are behind due to less points through missed FSs, that's due to missed FSs. Put having to foul in this same category.

2) there were no games we clearly lost because of FT shooting that year.

There really aren’t that many scenarios where you can say with certainty that poor free throw shooting is what caused a loss. It’s not as simple as looking at the final score and then adding made FTs back to it and determining that would have made the difference.

That team was a really poor FS shooting team. It’s almost a certainty that it cost us at least one game, which is apparently the threshold for validity.
