Good thing we are not grading spelling and grammar here.

Definitely a lot of things that need to be cleaned up. Missing the toughness of Griff and Feliz. The fact that Grandison, Hutch and BBV haven’t panned out has shortened the bench dramatically. We really needed at least one of those guys to give us some quality minutes and that’s not looking good. I still expect a solid season and to be a team no one wants to draw in the tourney.

B, maybe B-. I was skeptical this was a top 10 team when we started there, but I imagine we're still a top 10-15 team in the country based on what else I'm seeing. Baylor is a legit top 5 and we played Mizzou on the road, so I can excuse those games a bit.

On a player level, Ayo and Damonte are doing mostly what they need to do, the latter being a nice surprise. Kofi is average and a victim of his own potential/expectations. Giorgi, and to a lesser extent Trent, have been disappointing in their development at newish roles. Curbelo and Miller are exciting, raw talents with freshman inconsistency/mistakes.

Really disappointing is that we appear to have no depth after the top 7. Grandison is yet another guy who was hyped but can't find minutes in his 4th year of college ball. I'm not sure Hutcherson's ever going to be fit to play at this level. Hamlin and BBV appear to be wasted scholarships. Brad has somehow had worse luck with forwards than Weber. This isn't to pine for guys who bailed, as other than Griffin (who takes minutes from Trent/Miler and probably shots from Ayo) and Ebo as a 4th year, I don't think any of them would see the floor this year, but man it sucks being so thin.

The good news is arguing about being a top 20 team vs. being a top 5 team. If it goes well, we're like an MSU team that coalesces in the last 3rd of the season, but it could also be really mediocre.

It's not fair to say that about BBV. It's not fair, for the same reason, to say that about Hutcherson. But because Hutcherson is a stick, I never had faith in his ability to survive the rigorous B1G.

Grandison's reverse lay-up attempt in Columbia was cringe-worthy.

Good point on those guys.
The development of Griffin and Feliz and their attitude last year was huge in creating more options for us besides Ayo trying to play hero ball and Kofi being asked to make actual post moves besides putbacks and lobs.
We were pretty tough and pretty good at end of year- like S16-ish or better with some luck.

Need Miller to get back on track as third scorer, and Trent and Giorgi to contribute more.
Maybe the Hawkins kid will develop if he ever gets more than 4 mpg.

We do not have the toughness and swagger we had last year in second half. Defense and intensity needs to improve. Too much Ayo. Good player but easily schemed for in halfcourt especially. Does not have the range to open up his mostly all righthand drives. He is not Buddy Hield.

Overall grades-

Team B-/C+
Underdog and staff- C-

Players
Ayo- B+
DaMonte- A-
Kofi-C-
Miller- C
Trent - C
Giorgi- C
Cubelo- B

In fairness I should clarify both are in the too-injured category than in the wow-can't-play category. If you have faith being around the team that BBV can actually recover to play at the B1G level, great, I hope he does, I just know it's rare for a guy to ever develop missing that much time early.

The first two games are not worthy of measure.  Ohio exposed our defensive problems, Baylor then exploited them for all to see.  Missouri simply just followed the script.  Duke is a very young team but has no backcourt talent to handle the ball whatsoever.  I'm sticking to my guns they struggle mightily to finish. 500 or better this year.

We have a lot of problems, but most I think can be corrected if Belo and Miller develop and reduce mistakes especially Belo.  Millers defense has been impressive for a freshman given the last 4 games, but Belo's defense is going to have to improve exponentially for this Illini team to break through any kind of sweet 16 barrier.  In fact this Illinois team defense has been rather disappointing this year.  We play no where near the intensity as we did at the end of last year.

Kofi struggles in the half court and pick and roll game. When his back is to the basket on offense he is even worse.  He needs to learn to stay on his feet on defense.  Kid jumps at every shot attempt often putting him out of position on the rebound.  Missouri and Baylor slaughtered us on the glass, might also be due in part that we seem fatigued in the second half of games.  We are not winning the lose balls and boxing out after the miss.

Da'Monte has been solid on the defensive end every game.  Granted he's often giving up 4 to 5 inches on the guy he's guarding, but when he is own someone his own size he can dominate.   He has improved his shot, just like the signs we were seeing from last year but still lacks any type driving to the basket ability, but that's okay we have others that can do that.

Team Grade C lots of room to grow.  Illinois is going to have to figure out how to replace what Feliz brought to every fight game, if not we will never make it past the first weekend.

B+ Ayo
B   Curbelo
B   Miller
C+ Gorgi
B+ DaMonte
D   Frazier
D   Kofi
C+ Hawkins
D   Grandison

BBV is a stick?  Has he lost muscle?  He looked kinda beastly for a kid his age last year.  Admittedly, haven't seen him this year.

And why does Giorgi get such an average grade?  We've played 4 meaningful games, 2 of which I thought he was a real bright spot - coming off the bench.  What are people expecting of him?
