I know we had such huge fans of Lovie here, so I wanted to make sure he is recognized for this extraordinary feat!
Lovie Smith is the first Illinois football coach to oversee 5 consecutive losing seasons in the entire 129 year history of Illini football!
Yes, you read that right
Congrats Lovie!
I get your point (sh*tty football is sh*tty football), but I'm going to asterisk this one.
If the 1937 Illinois team (3-3-2) had been eligible for a bowl game, Coach Zuppke might also have finished his career at the UofI with 5 consecutive losing seasons. His teams finished with losing records from 1938-1941 (3-5, 3-4-1, 1-7, 2-6 respectively). Under Coach Smith, the Illini finished 6-7 in 2019 after losing 35-20 to Cal in the Redbox Bowl, very conveniently played -- for the Bears -- in Santa Clara, CA.
Also, back when Zuppke was coaching, a tie was a possible outcome, so it was much easier to avoid losing a game. Teams tended to play for a tie rather than risk losing a game. During the 1937 season, Illinois played DePaul & Notre Dame on consecutive weekends, with both games ending in a 0-0 snooze fest. A tie hasn't been an option in college football since the 1995 season.
