But since he’s black, I’m guessing that would be a popular misconception…

Get Billings back, add a FA and a 1st rounder to the Dline; give Austin Booker, Dexter, and Pickens another year to develop. Should be pretty serviceable, if not a strength.

Get a proven FA guard or two add a 2nd round center (probably add a 2nd round guard); better scheme, better coaching. No reason the Oline can’t be vastly improved.

Good take!

Quote
Per Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, the Indianapolis Colts were set to fire Eberflus from their defensive coordinator position after the 2021 season. Eberflus wasn’t a candidate for other defensive coordinator gigs around the league in the 2022 offseason. Still, Poles entrusted him with overseeing a roster rebuild in Justin Fields’ critical second season in the NFL.

What a shocker that Poles looks like a big dummy.

Never ever understood that hire. Definition of uninspired. Hiring the defensive coach of a bad team who was about to be fired is the most Bears thing ever.

Jacksonville was set to hire Eberflus as HC when the Bears hired him. That’s why the Bears gave him a 5 year contract.

Eberflus had George written all over him. Mild mannered, was going to bring back hard work and discipline. They came in getting complaints that practices were too hard and then we never heard about or saw accountability since then.

Not according to that article.

Not according to that article.

And that article is the be/all end all? Everyone with a functioning brain knows Polian and George gave Poles a list of 3 to choose from. With Polian and Armstrong in the mix it was basically an arranged marriage.

Having said that, I think Poles genuinely liked Flus. But it was definitely an arranged marriage for the most part.

In Poles' defense, he was hired just two days before the Bears hired Eberflus back in 2022. Poles didn't get to conduct his own search for a head coach, rather he was handed three finalists: Eberflus, Dan Quinn and Jim Caldwell.

Flus was hired 3 weeks after the season. That’s a long time to wait on firing a coach if you’re looking to do so. So skeptical as to the veracity of this report. Who waits until a month after the season to fire a HC or DC?

I'll await Mike Florio's input. That Eberlose was on the way out on Indy makes a lot of sense.

It’s possible, but I’m not sure how many coaches are fired weeks after the season. Usually that’s done by Tuesday after the last game.

Definitely a lot more holes to poke in Poles over the last 6 weeks, but I think most of the outrage is an overreaction. What was Ryan Pace's biggest weakness? Not hitting on day one and two picks. Ryan Poles has hit on every 1st and 2nd round pick he's had in 3 years. And that's 7 picks, 4 of them 2nds. Caleb, Rome, Wright, Dexter, Gordon, Brisker, and everyone thought Stevenson was good until his mental meltdown in Maryland.

It's too bad he traded for Claypool (although you can justify why he did it).  That pick could have been Joey Porter (and was for Pittsburgh). I'm stil convinced that with a better coach and an off-season addressing some obvious needs (which they have the resources to do), things could be looking bright again.
