So, one more thing about Pontiac. When my kids were little, we would take the Amtrak from Pontiac to the city for the day. You could get a round trip ticket for like 11 bucks, and it would take you right into Union Station.

Well, one time, we were on the tracks waiting to leave, and right before they took off, a car pulled up fast, and let out 3 guys. All in matching gray sweatsuits, with shoeboxes. Right before they got on the train, the guy that drove them there gave them each some cash. So, we saw these dudes getting released from prison, and getting shipped back on the Amtrak to Chicago.

They came into our car, and they just sat quietly, and talked amongst themselves. When we got to Union station, they got off the train, and were absolutely baffled. They just were looking up at everything, and they honestly did not know what to do. I actually asked one of them if they needed some help, and they just said they're trying to figure out how to get home.

I took them outside and showed them where the bus stop was. Said, hopefully you can figure it out from here. I was taken aback by how these guys were from Chicago, but they could absolutely not navigate Union Station, or figure out how to get home.

Reminds me of one of my favorite “stupid lines” in the movies. Slingblade when Billy Bob gets released from the mental home and the kid asks him why he’s “carrying all them books.”

I visited Pontiac too. I went on tours to both with my college psychology class/professor. Both it and Statesville were extremely intimidating and scary. Very dingy places and couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life there.

So our state of Illinois elected officials are actually trying to close Statesville (it’s a max security prison). They want to transfer/disperse all of the inmates (max security inmates) to other prisons in Illinois that are not max security. Seems like a pretty good idea, huh! All in an effort to save money. Gotta love your elected officials. Not only that, but it’d put a lot of people out of work in that area!
