The problem with him demanding a trade is that no one will give you anything for him when he’s a total mess as he was. So you’re trading a guy you gave away the world for for at best a 7th round pick or cutting him. If Caleb demanded a trade now, he still has value.

Mark Grote played some clips that give the impression that Waldron was instructed to kiss Caleb’s butt and that didn’t go over well with some vets.

A lot to chew on after yesterday’s headlines (that actually didn’t really reveal anything that new). Tons of blame to go around:

Trace Armstrong: I’ll start with the man who was the Bears “shadow president” the last two plus years. This guy held way too much influence within the organization, and as a former Bear I’m sure George loved him and thought he could help turn the franchise around. Armstrong is the primary reason we ended up with Flus and Waldron, and probably even Poles.

Flus and Waldron: Sure, there were some definite red flags with Flus, but with the defense looking poised to be a top unit and Justin Fields to blame for the offense, you could make a case to keep him. And again, I’d be shocked if George didn’t mandate Flus stay. Can’t see George paying a coaching staff for 3 years not to coach when they were “making progress.” Waldron (I’d blame Armstrong for this mostly) was a complete disaster. How did this guy survive two years under a HOF coach like Pete Carroll? Even if he wasn’t the main reason, he “oversaw” Geno’s turnaround. He wasn’t Ben Johnson coming in, but he certainly appeared “qualified” for the job. The coaching on this team last year was completely derelict in every way. I guess it’s not that uncommon that coordinators are inattentive for lack of a more succinct way of putting it. Alex Smith apparently said the same thing happened to him. Could go on for another two paragraphs easily here, but I don’t guess I need to.

Poles: Sure, Poles isn’t as terrible as PAMan likes to paint him out to be, but not bringing in a vet to mentor Caleb was a huge mistake. It was a primary concern of mine going into last season. I didn’t understand going into the season with just Caleb and Bagent at all. This is one of Pole’s bigger mistakes IMO and it was a pretty glaring error from the get go.

Caleb: Yes, the kid was horribly mismanaged, but he needed to go to other coaches for help
If he didn’t know what to look for when watching film. He should have started with Waldron and Flus. What the hell were these guys doing last year? The negligence is criminal. There are zero excuses for Caleb this year. He’s got everything he could possibly ask for; time for him to take a significant leap forward and look like the best QB in his class.

I don’t blame Caleb’s dad for having reservations about Chicago. Sure, I said a case could be made to keep Flus, but I also said if they were drafting a QB they should change head coaches. Credit to Caleb for not wanting to “nuke the city.”

Flus: No doubt PAMan will claim AOTC on Flus but this is a guy who was out on Flus like two games in. I try to be objective and judge a guy by what I actually know and see on the field. Most of my concerns with Flus were of the game management variety. Coaches usually get better with that with experience. He was supposed to be the “work them hard and hold them accountable guy,” and he was anything but that, particularly last year.

Outside of actively considering ways out of Chicago, I don’t think any news was “broken” yesterday. Cowherd’s comments proved to be 100% accurate. PAMan, you should write Cowherd a letter apologizing.

Could have easily written more, but I’ll wait to respond to other comments should there be any.

I think Caleb will be fine, maybe even really damn good, but I’d have probably traded the pick. Especially when Poles knew they were looking for ways out of Chicago. Although, I think that can be argued either way (Poles moving on, or sticking to his guns on Caleb). Seems like they possibly didn’t do their due diligence on Jayden Daniels. TBH though, personally I was worried about his slight build.

There is an 'excuse' for Caleb this year - basically it is his rookie season again. New coaches, new offense, new focus on fundamentals, new film studies (since last year's were non-existent), new (hopefully competent) line. Know you do not want to hear it, because you wrongly claimed last year that he was walking into the best situation for a number 1 pick, but he is starting from scratch.
