I think there's some kayfabe going on.  The retaliation seems telegraphed to me.  I don't think Iran wants a wider regional war any more than we do, but after their embassy complex being bombed, they had to make some sort of response.

It seems like that is the case. But there are also reports of attacks on US bases in Iraq.
