So JJ does not drive to Wyoming....
Week Zero (How is there a week zero? Makes no sense.)
Opponent: Wyoming
When: Saturday, Aug. 27
Time: 3:00PM Central
Where: Champaign
TV: BTN
Line: Saw someone somewhere [edit- VSIN] claim the line is Illini -10. I doubt the Illini are that good or Wyoming is that bad. Who knows? No one has played. It is week zero afterall.
Go Illini!
-
2 incoming transfer qbs for 2 teams who have been able to run the ball.
The Cowboys generally have a decent run defense.
Don't make mistakes, don't put the untested fg kicker into long attempts, and get a win.
Have a game under the belt and hit the road to play the Hoosiers in their 1st game.

Thank, PAMan. Gas is too damn expensive to make those mistakes.

LOL. Yeah, definitely true.

Spicy Tempo-ish take!

I think we could be pretty decent but it wouldn’t surprise me if we skid to 4-8.

Wyoming 27
Illinois 16
Illinois finishes 5-7. Not terrible. Not good. Just there.

Yeah Bielema will spring a few upsets in the Big 10. Last year most of their Big 10 games were close.

At the end of the day, this game is a toss-up; expect a game that could go down to the final few minutes.
Cannot say that article was reassuring in any way.

I am shocked.
I am too. Danny DeVito is 77 years old, and 4'10. If this is the best we can do at qb, we're really fucked.

If Danny can hit a tight end 5-7 yards downfield, it's a start.

Jobu, we are Illini fans. We have always been fucked. Even when they had good seasons, it was just so they could kick us in the balls the next season when we were least expecting it.

A good fisting will definitely get him prepared. We’re/He’s good.

Line has moved 3.5 points since opening. I don't know what is causing everyone to throw money on Illinois with 10 point spread over a team that's had a winning record 5 of their last 6 seasons, the exception was during COVID.
I feel like this game will be tight and low scoring and likely ugly. I would take Wyoming to cover the -13.5.

Well, when you have a quarterback like Danny Devito ready to fist a dog, you would expect the line to move considerably, I would think.
I don't bet on college football, especially in week 0, but if I did, I would take Devito to cover if it was -20.5. Piss my pants.
-
The other elephant in the room, that hasn't been discussed. How is Danny's driving record? Any chance he gets in a sportscar with a child and starts doing donuts on the highway?
I mean, if he's ready to fist a dog, who know what the fuck else he's capable of. I just hope he has a good grasp on the playbook.

Also, Sebastian Harsh is their best DE and not playing due to injury.
-
The Illinois offensive linemen average around 50 lbs more weight than Wyoming's defensive line.
Our offense should be ok. The defense just needs to not give up big passing plays to Wyoming's suspect QBs and we should be fine.

Don't know too much about Wyoming. I think the Illini take care of business today.

I was there too. It was really warm that day to boot.

84 degrees. The U S of A high temp for the day, I believe.
Not as hot as Neuheisel was that day tho.
It was all downhill after the tailgating and walking into the Rose Bowl.
-

Nice day except for the game, warm but not too bad. A friend from my hometown came out for the game thinking the Illini were gonna roll. I told him UCLA was hot going into that game and don't be over-confident. I had seen quite a few UCLA games on TV and they had it going good coming into the Rose Bowl.
I've been to a few UCLA afternoon games in September that were really warm.

Looks like McCray lost weight. Not sure that's a good thing.

He's listed at 235. Down from 240.

I don't think that helps, do you? He was a load with decent speed who was hard to bring down (when he didn't fumble).

Agreed. He didn't look overweight, he had decent speed and a good down hill runner.

It’s real early, but Danny looks like he might be an actual qb. Of course, we’ve been watching Brandon fucking Peters for so long, anything looks decent, I guess.

Lunney is not very exciting as a play caller. Nothing but short passes, no play action.
-
Lunney is not very exciting as a play caller. Nothing but short passes, no play action.
One would think he is not going to do anything unique or exciting against an opponent like this. He should be able to rely on his O line to dominate.
-
The Wyoming defense is playing soft, and not pressing receivers at all. Short passes are there, so take them. And run it down their throat.
It’s not complicated.
-
Wyoming should try another QB in the 2nd half

25 pass attempts for 100 yards.

Exactly. Super vanilla play calling.
-
Luke Ford should probably stick with his WWE contract. If you are a senior and a walk-on is starting over you I think the coaching staff must know he’s not very good
-
Should have grabbed the WY place kicker out of the portal
-
Maybe Bielema yelled at the half and hurt their feelings.
-
They'll get over any hurt feelings.
Hope McCray's knee is ok.

Bielema working the refs seems to have helped.

Not per Tempo

Devito does seem to get able to have some zip on those out patterns

Way to have some sand. Illinois!!!

Yet another example of why "recruiting Illinois" is not what it is cracked up to be.

That play to Reiman was nifty

Yeah the Luke Ford situation is baffling to me. Is he really that bad or just not been given any opportunities?! Reiman does look like the better TE though.

He freaking dropped another punt

They might be auditioning for punt returners this week.

Rose Bowl!!!

Pros: Clinical win against shit team.
Cons: We seem to have few guys who can catch a football cleanly.

Didn’t expect to dominate in this fashion, but Wyoming doesn’t look good at all. Not sure what we can really take from it other than it’s nice to not have to squeak out an opening week win against a small school. DeVito looked pretty solid, I think I read that 12 different players caught passes, D was stout, and Chase Brown will be playing on Sundays next season.

The odds would be quite low I suspect.
You should have attended. Was a great show and now I'm hung over.

Those Husker players think that N on their helmets stands for knowledge.
That's one program I never root for, over 50 years of hating them. If they never, ever win another game I'll be fine with it.

Don't get too excited. Dick Cheney spiked their gatorade in revenge for Liz
-
Possibly the worst play call in football ever. Perhaps the stupidest decision in any sport. Just scored 2 straight TDs to go up 11. Nine minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Frost tries an onside kick.
-
Frost making that decision just screams of desperation. He feels the heat and will be fired much sooner than later.
-
I'm not sure it was in desperation, but it was flat out boneheaded. Even with no belief whatsoever that they could stop NU from scoring, just outscore them the rest of the way. They were up 11.
I thought ........
Don't think.
-
Desperation is trying an onside kick when you are behind in the 4th quarter, you are out of tos, and there is little time left. Trying it when you are ahead in the 3rd quarter with lots of time left and you have momentum is insanely stupid.

From everything I have read, it was. But what do you expect from Guenther Jr.? Everything remains on the cheap in ECI and no one down there thinks anything of it. Illinois AD office remains the worst elements of the Cub, Sox, Bull, and Hawk organ-i-zations rolled into one.
The damned stadium was not even 2/3 full.

-
I would imagine the issue was that they were short on employees
Because they cannot find employees or Guenther Jr. did not want to pay for them? I will go with the latter based on history. A big part of the story is that none of the scanners were working properly at the entrances or the concessions. Maybe Guenther Jr. had them buy some some cheap Soviet hacker knockoff software.
-
Sounds like they also ran out of water by like halftime or something. Which is pretty hilarious.
-

Another issue is that people don’t download their e-tickets beforehand, they wait to pull them up at the entrance and it crushes the cell bandwidth for the area. So you have people trying to pull up e-tickets blocking the way for others who are ready to go. Saw this happen at college World Series back in June.
There’s no excuse for running out of water. It’s not the first time thats happened, which is absurd.
I’d imagine they’re having personnel issues like every other food/concessions/venue in the US. I doubt it’s because Whitman won’t pay them.

Your faith in Guenther Jr. actually spending money on stuff like this is your weakness...especially since they did not have enough $4 bottles of water to sell. Champaign County unemployment rate was above 4% as of June.

That's actually a good point. Although, I actually drank one of those at a Rockies game last weekend, and remarkably enough, I found it refreshing.

Probably true, but it sounds to me like they just weren't ready, in many facets.
There are places that hold over 100,000 people. It will be interesting to see if they have the same kind of problems.
As far as concessions. There are tons of organizations around that will be happy to volunteer to run a concession stand. No excuse for having stands closed. And, surely the athletic department can pony up for more scanners, more people and better internet around there. Basically, they need to get their shit together. Come up with a way. I'm sure there are experts out there that can help them handle crowds.
Sounds like it wasn't just the stadium experience, either. The tailgating, parking, everything was basically fucked. It's like they never had D1 football there before. Embarassing.
-
Elitist!
I know. I hated to do it, but when in Rome...
They didn't have Natty light.
One thing I found charming. A Coors Light tall boy was 12.50. For a ballpark, not bad, I guess. So, I bought one for myself and one for my son.
The charming part was that they actually charged tax, on top of the price. So, it was 27.00 for 2 ice cold Coors light tall boys. Colorado loves charging tax on stuff, being up front about it, and saying, what's up, bitch?
Anyway, I loved that ballpark. I watched Evan Longoria hit a grand slam, putting the Giants up 6-2, only for the game to go into extras, with the Giants winning 8-6. It's neat how a nice, easy swing sends a ball out of that place. I felt like I could hit 30 home runs there.

Didn't they used to do this all the time?
I know they did for basketball games. Not sure how they’re doing football now a days.
In the early 90s, when they were actually half way decent, they didn’t seem to have these kind of problems.
-
Shouldn't have had concession problems since the crowd was rather small. It was only 37,832 on an 80+ degree sunny afternoon. Last year's opener vs Nebraska had 41,064. UTSA following week had 33,906.
-

There's employee shortages in the US for most convenience store jobs. Places that used to be open 24 hours a day are no longer open. It appears the pandemic took people out of the workforce that never came back.
I'd still think ushers, concessions, parking attendants could still be found for events though. Maybe need to hire HS kids to do it

Where are all the illegals, er undocumented, that Sleepy Joe is letting in working? Not Memorial Stadium from the sounds of it.
-
I’m probably wrong but something tells me a university located in the state of Illinois probably has a bunch of stupid ass restrictions and red tape associated with hiring people to do menial tasks.
-
Maybe the bus load of migrants Abbott sent to Chicago can be sent down to Champaign to work for the Athletic Department on game days. Get on it, Guenther, Jr !
-
The university could reciprocate by sending a team of Chinese engineering and IT students to Texas to help Low Energy Greg figure out how to harden the state’s electric grid.
-
Nebraska is a totally delusional football fan base

They are wacko. I don't mind some devotion, but they lost me with the "Saving the Big Ten!" crap a couple of years ago. Do better than 4-8 and then talk smack.
Also, did they forget they got smacked down by Kansas and Missouri before they ran from the Big 12? I get it -- Texas was a bully, blahblahblah. But again, don't come crawling to a new league, be mediocre at best, and then try to dictate terms.
-

Dim Bulb Greg.
