Baylor will be probably be the dominant program of the next half decade or so. Who remembers when I got hammered for saying some years back that I’d be interested in Scott Drew?
-
Maybe you could compile a list of underappreciated AOTC slights & grudges to get it all in one place?

Please, please tell us every detail.

This is why the HQ award, currently in Q97's possession, is named after Tempo. I remember that he liked Drew, and Reggie Theus.

You actually remember that incorrectly. I “liked” Theus better than some of the other truly awful names that were being thrown around. The idea that I was in love with Theus is greatly exaggerated.
-
And Shaka Smart
Everyone wanted Smart. I was far from alone there. He’d have undoubtedly been better than John Groce. The book isn’t closed on Smart just yet.
-
Interesting that you don't mention who the fuck the player is. Literally all you give a fuck about is coaches.
Seems like your ultimate wet dream is to get eiffel towered by Sean Miller and Scott Drew. With Reggie Theus standing in the corner watching and jerking off.
Pretty comical. Probably. Sort of, or so.
Because the coach is 90% of the program. Any program. We’ve even seen the “blue bloods” crater when they don’t have a great coach.
-
And Lorenzo Romar.
Another case of “he’s better than some of the other names being mentioned.” Romar recruited/produced a lot of NBA players. Far more than John Groce.
-
Maybe you could compile a list of underappreciated AOTC slights & grudges to get it all in one place?
All I have to say is “Khalil Mack.” I won that debate when virtually everyone said I was crazy.
-
I don’t know if Lorenzo Romar would have won at a high level at Illinois, but he would have recruited well and put an entertaining product on the court. It would have almost certainly been better than post Dee Brown/Weber and Groce eras.
-
Specifically regarding Theus this is what I said: when they were throwing out some real reaches in terms of potential hires including I think Robert Smith among others, I said “IF (key word) we’re going to throw a complete dart just give me Theus..” And of course, as always, the HQ ran with that. Really really far.
-
And as far as Romar, I mentioned many times that Romar was no higher than 4th or 5th on my list (of mostly realistic candidates). But of course, the HQ ran with that one, too.
-

Thus, the use of "like" and not "love...."

Yeah, but the idea here that I “wanted” Theus isn’t true. I merely said at the time if we’re going to throw a dart on someone largely unproven, give me Theus. Plus, it also seemed you were using that as a dig. Which you clearly were. Which is fine. It’s been the MO for like 10 years.
-
At that time, some of the names being bandied about didn’t have have college coaching experience.
-
I feel terrible for all the straw men who are likely to be *pummeled* if this thread continues to move forward.
-
John Groce was near the bottom of everyone’s wish list. And he’d just taken Ohio within a whisker knocking off #1 UNC to go an E8. Theus was a full tier below the bottom of the wishlist.
John Groce’s period of time here was the definition of mediocrity. But his record looks good compared to Theus. So I don’t buy the “Would have recruited well and played a fun style.” (Which is what we always say about black coaches, of course)
But we probably would have been funny bad.

Bloomin’ idiot

Just because you were AOTC on the Mack trade does not mean you have won them all. No one ever does.

Is predicting something won’t work out well for the Bears even AOTC worthy?

There were MANY who ended up veering off the curve in that thread. MiniDitka even had an artist's rendition.

Maybe we should all fluff Tempo for a while, just to see what happens.
-
Tempo is, "well above average" when it comes to his predictions
-
I think Tempo is the best poster on here.
-
But even if he wasn’t, it wouldn’t surprise me either

We weren’t “funny bad” under Groce?
I’m not saying Theus would have been good here, but I’m not sure Cal St-Northridge is a place many people will be successful. I don’t think Cal St N to Illinois is a good barometer to measure by. Bruce Weber was a fantastic midmajor coach (at a level higher that Northridge). Doesn’t translate into “high major” success. And again, I never ever once “beat the drum” for Theus, just said if we’re going to go for the desperation hire, he’d have as good a chance as any. Huge difference between that and actually “wanting” him hired.
-
Again, Cal St Northridge to Illinois is not an apples to apples comparison. Theus’ record at NM St. is a more legitimate comparison.
-
Anyone know why Theus left NM after only two years? Probably a shithole place to live for a guy used to big city life, but I honestly have no idea. His 2nd year at NM State was a good one.
-
Oh damn, had totally forgotten he left for the Sacramento Kings. Which clearly means he can’t coach a lick. I mean anyone can get an NBA HC gig.
-
Tempo loves Reggie Theus. God damn.
I'm gonna guess nobody that posts on this board knows Reggie's coaching information in depth. Just a gut feeling I have. I wouldn't be totally shocked if someone did know tho.
Nah, I had to look it up to remember Reggie was an NBA HC. We could shift the discussion to how mediocre white guys have an overwhelming tendency to advance farther than most people though.
-
After 3 years, Mark Gottfried, a reasonably accomplished high major coach also has a dreadful record at Cal St-N. Much worse record than Murray St, Alabama, and NC St.
-
If you go back and look through all the threads with an open mind you’ll see that Tempo is right way more than he’s wrong.

Just look at all of us who post here. Case closed.

Is this a Jedi-mind trick? Well played.

Dude, just take the compliment and run with it. Occam's razor and all.

*hat tip*

That one is actually decent.
-
Last thing about Theus (I kind of hope). If you were a top Chicago area recruit, who would rather give the time of day to: former Bulls NBA all-star who happened to be an NBA HC, and has skin that could strongly resemble yours? Or mediocre bald white guy with a ladder and slogany wrist bands? I’m aware “neither” could be the correct answer.
-

I have to admit I actually yours and Jjs comments earlier. So I guess custard was just riding the train.

Missed this one, too. But ignoring you is almost never the incorrect answer.
-

Don’t think I’ve ever claimed “I’ve won them all.” Just ahead of the curve on most of the big ones.
