I loved their 2018 FF run, especially since they beat down the Fightin' Webers. I would be rooting for them if they played anyone else.
Illinois 68, Loyola 62
-
Loyola will keep this close enough but in the end we are simply too fast and too powerful for them.
-
I’m nervous as a whore in church for every tourney game but especially this one. I sure as shit don’t wanna see this story end with a loss to a goddamn 8 seed. I think we would win something like 8 or 9 of 10 against Loyola, but it’s the tourney, they’re under-seeded, and have an All-American level player.
They’ll play hard and smart and muck up the game. Krutwig hasn’t seen a guy like Kofi but not sure Kofi has really seen a guy with footwork like Krutwig either.
Assuming we make it past this one we will start seeing teams that have the athletes to force Ayo right and double Kofi the way OSU did in the BTT. If they indeed go down, I hope it isn’t with Ayo with the detriment of a mask forcing everything the last two mins. Use him to draw attention and then get it to one of any of our other capable clutch players.

committee totally did this for ratings

Georgi and Kofi battle constantly in practice, If Kofi can best Garza I'm sure he'll be fine unless they get some BS fouls against him

Who is AA level player??

Who is AA level player??
Krutwig - 3rd team AP

Krutwig - 3rd team AP
I suppose that qualifies.
-
High standards.
-
The only reason this game might be within 10 points is they will sit on it to keep the score in the 60s.
Their only chance. They play solid fundamental D. The secondary help defenders always looking to take charges.
They take decent shots. Krutwig isn't bad. Georgi would also be a star in the MVC. The scoring guards are ok.
They have exactly 2 quad one wins. Best wins appear to be Georgia Tech and Drake. They are a B version of a mediocre Wisconsin who beat them. We lose to them we should be ashamed.
Illinois 72-61.
-
Rumors of Porter leaving helps us. Krutwig playing against the best big in the country helps us. Our arsenal of guards will help assuming they play efficiently and hit some threes.
Hate the time. That's the only thing that worries me.
-
Only way we lose is:
Kofi gets in early foul trouble and ends up with 9 points and 6 Rebounds and goes 1-6 from line.
Ayo goes 4-15.
We shoot like shit overall. Like 38%.
We go 2-15 from 3.
We miss a shit ton of FTs'. We go 10-21.
We have 14 TOs.
We only score 65 points.
Basically your perfect storm of shit.
And they shoot great. Like 48%
They have 5 TOs.
They hit 13-15 FTs.
They go 7-11 from 3.

There’s a guy zooming from his car passenger seat
Shannon Ryan has oak finish and white appliances which haven’t been in style since she was doable
There was also a guy siting outside with a hippie looking mask on asking a question. Undy couldn’t hear him so he had to yell at the laptop
-
She's not at home.
-
On one hand, I’m super nervous about this game because they’re an under seeded team who has no chance to win it all, and this could be their super bowl.
On the other hand, we typically do poorly against teams with matchup problems, and I don’t see any here. Krutwig is good, but Kofi is better, and they don’t have any of the big, athletic guards that we have trouble with. We are a matchup problem for them.
I may just be talking myself off the ledge here, but I think we win comfortably.
-
I hope you guys are gonna be ok.
-

Marquette would be a nice transition for him.
-
Krutwig - 3rd team AP
That is such a name recognition pick from the FF team in '18. 15/7, and he wouldn't be a top 5 C in the B1G.
Although I wish we'd recruited him over whichever one of the PF/C busts applies from 4-5 years ago.
-
"Shannon Ryan has oak finish and white appliances which haven’t been in style"
Geez, are you my wife?

It's a joke. Decent midmajor center. That's it. Robbins outplayed him last year.
Kofi should abuse this guy on PnR to the hole.
-
Nerves are jumping.
Please, no nail biter.
-
Worst case scenario.
-
Loyola plays some D
-
Not the pace we want...
-
Man, we are struggle bussing out of the gate.
-
Well, we can't play much worse so it's gotta get better.
-
Loyola came to play
-
Lots of banging going on. Kofi should have used 2 hands on that missed dunk.
-
Loyola came to play
We can’t let them get a big lead because I don’t think they will collapse. They are not afraid.
-
Do we have anyone on the roster actually prepared for this?
-
Do we have anyone on the roster actually prepared for this?
Curbelo. Everyone else looks like they just woke up.
-
And Damonte has made a couple plays; but he can’t be the hero if we expect to win.
-
They’re letting Kofi play, could have easily been called for a foul just a minute ago.
-
On pace for 37 points right now: this reminds me of the Weber days.
-
Our half-court offense hasn’t been very crisp for a few games. It’s showing today.
-
Well, we can't play much worse so it's gotta get better.
Miller got robbed on that 3. Let's get going.
-
They're covering the passing lanes, have good spacing, and showing we can't dribble drive.
-
They're covering the passing lanes, have good spacing, and showing we can't dribble drive.
💯
-
7 TOs
-
We can't even run our offense. Loyola's D is pretty damn good.
-
Try the weave. Make them move on D.
-
Loyola is playing to the refs and we're not. Ayo cannot get traction and Kofi has 2 guys beating him up.
Also, Sister Jean is super obnoxious when you're in this position.
-
I’m thinking Curbelo is the key today. We’ve got to get creative on offense and collapse their defense.
-
We can't even run our offense. Loyola's D is pretty damn good.
They're guarding tight, getting away with small fouls, and we're not forcing them to foul us for real
-
We can't even run our offense. Loyola's D is pretty damn good.
Atta boy Giorgi
-
Might want to cover the 3 point line
-
We're getting worked.
-
Underwood being pantsed so far
-
Ok. Here’s a good time for Underwood show us he’s an advantage on the bench.
-
Let’s get this down to 2-3 points and then blow their doors off in the 2nd half. On pace for 40 points?
-
I told you be nervous
-
Underwood being pantsed so far
We're playing a technically better but less skilled basketball team and we have no idea what to do.
-
Ayo with more turnovers than points.
-
Ayo is getting abused
-
Feels like Loyola has 7 guys on defense.
-
Only way we lose is:
Kofi gets in early foul trouble and ends up with 9 points and 6 Rebounds and goes 1-6 from line.

-
Ayo looks wore out
-
They really get back on D. No fast break easy buckets today.
-
Curbelo got bailed out there.
-
We're playing a technically better but less skilled basketball team and we have no idea what to do.
Krutwig looking far better than Kofi so far.
-
I’ll feel a hell of a lot better if we can get this down to 3 by half-time.
-
I’ll feel a hell of a lot better if we can get this down to 3 by half-time.
Experience matters in this setting.
-
Underwood is shit bench coach.
Getting schooled.
-
I’ll feel a hell of a lot better if we can get this down to 3 by half-time.
The way the Illini are playing, getting it to 3 by the half would be a huge accomplishment.
-
We’re going to get steamrolled if we don’t find some half court buckets.
-
Let's knock this to single digits at least.
-
How deep is their bench? Hopefully we can tire them out?
-
Krutwig just wants it more than our guys
-
They're doubling Ayo 25 feet from the basket. Somebody has to be open.
-
We need more of that from Curbelo. It’s the only way we’re getting half-court offense.
-
Felt like Krutwig walked
-
Yay, illini got it to single digits!
-
Felt like Krutwig walked
That's what I yelled. LOL
-
Let's knock this to single digits at least.
Mission accomplished.
-
Ok; at least a bit of momentum heading into the half. A lot of work to do.
-
See if Brad can make some adjustments.
-
Only 7 fouls called. Letting way too much go.
Did Traitor Judy steal your login? Suck it up, pansy!
-
Ok, Underwood. Impress me with the coaching chops everyone lauded you for when you were hired.
-
This is exactly the kind of game Loyola prefers. We gotta speed them up and maybe the refs can start giving us some calls.
-
Curbelo's got to run the offense
-
Ayo was straight up awful. Let’s hope the real Ayo shows up 2nd half.
-
9 turnovers.
NCAA site isn't showing individual turnovers.
-
How deep is their bench? Hopefully we can tire them out?
Deepest we have seen all season. Only 1 player averages double figures. (Krutwig). Then they have 7 guys averaging better than 7 pts. Per game. They are Wisconsin
-
Wisconsin beat these guys by 14....
-
They're doubling Ayo 25 feet from the basket. Somebody has to be open.
We don't move off the ball or move the 2nd pass quickly enough.
-
Go Curbelo on top and everybody else flat on baseline.
We are standing around two feet from each other allowing doubles and ice of all picks.
-
9 TOs
-
Haha, no. I’ve watched Loyola get away with this kind of shit all year. It’s their kind of game.
I’m not bitching about the refs. If this is how they’re calling it we need to adjust. But I think they’ll tighten it up.
Illini should be used to this type of officiating by now.
-
Refs are fine. We have made no adjustments.
-
9 TOs
And have not had a chance to miss free throws...
-
Wally at CBS talking trash about Kofis weak shit.
-
Obviously, both teams had to deal with the early start time; but I just had a feeling starting at 11 was a bad omen.
-
Ayo 4 shots. 4 TOs.
-
We don't move off the ball or move the 2nd pass quickly enough.
When the double on Ayo comes, open man has got to recognize to go to the hole
-
I’m not arguing. I said we need to adjust. Jesus Christ.
It’s not my fault they’re playing like pussies. God damn.
I wasn't arguing with you. Just making an observation. Man, are you on edge....
-
Wally at CBS talking trash about Kofis weak shit.
He's getting crap beat out of him by 2-3 guys.
-
This is where we are in trouble. We have a culture coach, not a X and O guy.
-
He's getting crap beat out of him by 2-3 guys.
He never passes.
-
Feels a lot like the first half of the Liberty Okla st game in the first half. Then Liberty opened the 2nd half with 7 fouls called on them to open the first 4 minutes. Game flipped from that point on.
-
It’s gotta be the Ayo/Andre Show in the 2nd half.
-
Run Curbelo and Ayo iso all day. Get the fck out of their way to make plays
-
Feels a lot like the first half of the Liberty Okla st game in the first half. Then Liberty opened the 2nd half with 7 fouls called on them to open the first 4 minutes. Game flipped from that point on.
Loyola is a superior team to Liberty.
-
Feels a lot like the first half of the Liberty Okla st game in the first half. Then Liberty opened the 2nd half with 7 fouls called on them to open the first 4 minutes. Game flipped from that point on.
Let's hope.
-
He never passes.
And Loyola knows that.
-
One of my buddies sent me this

-
So much for feel good stories about a 101 year old woman of the cloth. lol
-
Well, at least Underwood saw what we all saw....
-
And right back to allowing that same lob shit.
-
Ayo gonna go Ayo?
-
Getting the whistles you all wanted, except going against the Illini
-
Miller!
-
I feel like we're on the verge of going on a huge run.
-
Miller!
Are they starting to wake up?
-
Going to have win this with defense.
-
Pass the ball, Kofi
-
Nobody could tell Kofi about the triple team from behind ?
-
They have an answer every time we look like we're about to go on a run
-
Going to have win this with defense.
No foul on 12 for pushing Curbelo?
Big shot from Ayo
-
Easily Ayo's worst game on defense. He's been getting abused all game.
-
More Curbelo, plz
-
They're now calling fouls so hopefully we can hit free throws.
-
And every time they answer, they add 1-2 pts to their earlier lead.
Gonna take some stops on D.
-
Not looking good down 10 with less than 12 to go at this slow ass pace.
-
In bonus. Use it dumbass
-
They're now calling fouls so hopefully we can hit free throws.
Nope
-
These fuckers can't miss
-
This is brutal
-
Almost time to panic.
-
Almost time to panic.
It is time to panic.
-
How about pressing?
-
If we're a championship caliber team, we come back and win this
-
Almost time to panic.
It's not close enough to panic. Might as well just lay back and enjoy watching a great basketball team.
-
It is time to panic.
I’ll wait until the 7:00 Mark
-
No crowd not helping us.
-
Bad foul by Ayo
-
These fuckers can't miss
And then we go inside to Kofi and he makes a smart pass to Williams and he can't get the basket. Our luck the whole game.
Finally a basket for Frazier
-
Ayo is an idiot
-
Bad foul by Ayo
Yeah, then he goes all Bohannon on the call.
-
Dafuq are we doing offensively?
-
I didn’t think our half-court offense looked good recently and it’s really showing today.
-
We're on offense. No movement.
They're on offense, they're all moving
-
Yeah, then he goes all Bohannon on the call.
Loyola's hounding defense is getting to him, physically and mentally.
-
I sure hope we won’t be in need of an Arizona level comeback with 4:00 to go.
-
Stats are pretty even except for steals and turnovers. Story of the game.
-
Getting dominated
-
Try something different on offense having Kofi setting ineffective screens 30 feet from basket isn’t doing shit
-
Ayo's defense lacking again.
-
Uh, how about pressing???
-
We’re getting schooled.
-
Ayo's defense lacking again.
Ready for the NBA
-
Trent 1-8
-
Krutwig is taking Kofi to school.
-
No offensive rebounding.
-
Run a press or something. We can't sit back and bleed the clock down.
-
We need to start going under the screens instead of trying to go over them because they’re just getting downhill and getting layups.
-
Completely outcoached.
-
Welp, an Arizona level come back it is. We’re effed.
-
Krutwig is destroying kofi
But so many here told us he was just an average center!!
-
Please, Kofi. We need these FTs
-
Gotta make shots to press.
Gotta get stops to break.
We're not doing either
-
Is it time to panic yet?
-
Shaka not looking so bad right now. ;D
-
Quick going over screens! Give them the 3, not the layup!!!
-
Is it time to panic yet?
💯
-
On the upside, we get to see that frumpy AT&T chick often.
-
On the upside, we get to see that frumpy AT&T chick often.
I'd hit it
-
They will make the 3
Right now it’s a layup line. I’ll take my chances.
-
Really disappointed with the effort.
-
All of a sudden the rest of the games today seem a lot less interesting.
-
All of a sudden the rest of the games today seem a lot less interesting.
Yup
-
Really disappointed with the effort.
That's the thing. No one showed up ready to play this morning. The time sucks. The draw sucks. But our guard effort is not even there.
-
What the hell kind of press is that? We just backed off and let them run more clock.
-
Why’d we back off on the press once they got it in?!
-
All of a sudden the rest of the games today seem a lot less interesting.
I might be done watching any more games honestly. This just sucked the life out of me.
-
We need a couple of 3s. Maybe Miller can be the hero.
-
That's the thing. No one showed up ready to play this morning. The time sucks. The draw sucks. But our guard effort is not even there.
Coaches didn't show up yesterday either, it looks like.
-
We need a couple of 3s. Maybe Miller can be the hero.
First we need a couple stops.
-
Next game, Aug 28 vs Nebraska.
-
Why’d we back off on the press once they got it in?!
Makes no sense at all
-
Brutal.
Like it wasn’t even a game to watch. Our offense was basically one of our guards 35 feet out being double teamed
-
But so many here told us he was just an average center!!
He is. Kofi is way below average defensively.
-
Where you at, Ayo?
-
First we need a couple stops.
Quit fighting through screens and force them to take the 3! Otherwise it’s just layups. They run it to perfection. How many more we need to see?! Make them take the harder shot!! Fuck, it’s not hard to see!
-
Effort has been there Loyola is just taking away everything we do on the ball screen offense and clowning our defense with their screens and cuts. Credit to them.
-
Loyola was ready.
Maybe their coaches didn't spend yesterday drinking beers and eating wings.
-
Welp, it was fun while it lasted. Best of luck Ayo.
-
He is. Kofi is way below average defensively.
Stop it. Dude is an All-American.
-
There's the token pressure again. Really guys?
-
Effort has been there Loyola is just taking away everything we do on the ball screen offense and clowning our defense with their screens and cuts. Credit to them.
Looking.forward to your review of the Winners and Losers in the Underwood thread!
-
Layup bcuz our defender is trailing.....
-
Get someone open for a fucking three Jesus
-
Kofi is hitting his FTs. There's that at least.
-
FTs have been good at least....
-
If you showed me Kofi’s free throw line I’d say we won by 30
-
Where will this rank in Illini Tourney losses?
-
Refs want to keep it interesting!
-
More half-assed pressure
-
What a kick to the nuts.
-
Where will this rank in Illini Tourney losses?
With all the choke jobs in Illini history, that would be a tough call.
-
Where will this rank in Illini Tourney losses?
Every previous #1 seed has at least made Elite Eight. So.....
-
Where will this rank in Illini Tourney losses?
Right behind Austin Peay
-
Lost this game in the 1st 10 minutes. It was 19-9 and we played lazy ass cavalier bullshit.
-
With all the choke jobs in Illini history, that would be a tough call.
This probably has to be #1 among “chokes.” Assuming we don’t witness a miracle.
-
How good would overtime feel. FML
-
Right behind Austin Peay
Loyola is better than Austin Peay; but that Illini team wasn’t a consensus choice to make the Final.
-
Loyola is a good team but damn losing to them on the biggest stage is just brutal.
Disappointing end to a season where we had much bigger goals outside of just making it in the tourney.
-
Middle aged white guy just picked Ayo.
-
They are too fundamentally sound to choke.
-
Ayo picked the worst time to play like dogshit
-
This probably has to be #1 among “chokes.” Assuming we don’t witness a miracle.
Don't think so. Playing a team with 2 guys who went to FF. Illini have lost to some real shit teams in the past.
-
We’re just not that good of an offensive team if we’re not getting easy baskets.
-
A good chance to win it all down in flames to an in-state mid-major.
-
I suppose Ayo could have been paying attention, but why start now?
-
Don't think so. Playing a team with 2 guys who went to FF. Illini have lost to some real shit teams in the past.
Name me another Illini team that was a consensus final favorite that lost to a mid-seed.
-
Right behind Austin Peay
I'd put it third maybe - the year we lost a 6 vs. 14 in the 2nd round is worse IMO.
This is still fucking embarrassing.
-
A good chance to win it all down in flames to an in-state mid-major.
Because...Illinois.
-
Never got closer than 6 points in the second half. A complete beatdown.
-
Thoroughly outperformed in all areas today.
-
Well I'm done watching anymore games.
A lot of fun moments this season, but it all just went to shit now.
Have to accept it and move on. Nothing you can do.
-
I'd put it third maybe - the year we lost a 6 vs. 14 in the 2nd round is worse IMO.
This is still fucking embarrassing.
No way. Can’t compare a loss as a 6 seed to the loss as a champion co-favorite in the 2nd round.
-
Jimmys and Joes watched Xs and Os for 40 minutes.
-
Only thing that eases the sting is an announcement both Ayo and Kofi are coming back.
-
Thoroughly outperformed in all areas today.
Man to man
-
Only thing that eases the sting is an announcement both Ayo and Kofi are coming back.
Haha
-
Name me another Illini team that was a consensus final favorite that lost to a mid-seed.
Loyola was under seeded I thought.
-
Burn all my Illini shit
-
I don't know about you guys, but I will root for Loyola now. Great team effort. They deserved the win.
-
17 turnovers. 12 steals.
Our 2 AAs may as well come back.
-
Man to man
And coach to coach.
-
No way. Can’t compare a loss as a 6 seed to the loss as a champion co-favorite in the 2nd round.
But that's how the tournament works. Sometimes you're overseeded at 1 and run into a 4-5 slotted at 8th and lose.
Sometimes the bracket opens and gives a middling team an easy path to the Elite Eight.
I really don't care about being a 1 seed. This team isn't more talented than the Austin Peay team or any of Frank's teams.
-
I don't know about you guys, but I will root for Loyola now. Great team effort. They deserved the win.
Yeah, I’m torn. But after I get over the bitterness the next couple of days I probably will. Think I’ll see if Sister Jean needs a side-piece.
-
Well I’m done watching games. This is fucking depressing. Let’s hope Kofi comes back. Ayo can go and I think we’ve got a shot next year if that happens.
Loyola is just a well-coached and fundamentally sound basketball team. They have two guys with Final Four experience. They are a damn good team.
-
But that's how the tournament works. Sometimes you're overseeded at 1 and run into a 4-5 slotted at 8th and lose.

I really don't care about being a 1 seed. This team isn't more talented than the Austin Peay team or any of Frank's teams.
But we weren’t over-seeded. Also, Loyola was under-seeded.
-
Loyola was under seeded I thought.
Yep. That team today finishes 3rd-5th in the B1G at worst. That's what Wisconsin used to look like every year.
-
Just no way a loss as a 6 seed compares to losing as a co-National Chamiponship favorite IMO. Especially in the 2nd round, to an in-state MM.
-
Welp, glad we had the national audience all to ourselves. FML
-
Just no way a loss as a 6 seed compares to losing as a co-National Chamiponship favorite IMO. Especially in the 2nd round, to an in-state MM.
Like you said in YOUR opinion. Not mine or others. Move on.
-
Stop it. Dude is an All-American.
Go back to where you were hiding for the last year. He sucks on D which is why he is bench player in NBA at best.
He is a bear on skates away from basket.
-
We did plenty wrong. Edit. Almost everything wrong.
Loyola made very few errors. On either end. They came to play, and played well.
-
But we weren’t over-seeded. Also, Loyola was under-seeded.
The B1G appears to have been way overrated.
-
Ayo was harassed all day, which is why we needed someone else to step up. Trent is the glaring problem. 1/10 and 0/5 from 3.
-
Nah. Ayo can go.
Curbelo, Miller, and Kofi is a good core and should make the tournament easily.
Thanks for the memories, Ayo and Trent.
-
Tough way for Trent to finish.
Participant sport season starting earlier than planned.
-
Well, nobody ever accused Coach Hulka of being a good game planner.
He got punked. Badly.
-
I am mad, in shock, and disappointed. We finished 2nd in the country with two all-Americans, and could not fucking beat loyola.
I felt like we were not prepared at all. I guess we have another shot at the final four in 15 years or so. >:(

Co-National championship favorite. Losing in 2nd round to in-state midmajor. You’re welcome to your opinion. It’s just wrong. A loss as a 6
Seed just doesn’t compare. Sorry.
-
I am mad, in shock, and disappointed. We finished 2nd in the country with two all-Americans, and could not fucking beat loyola.
I felt like we were not prepared at all. I guess we have another shot at the final four in 15 years or so. >:(
IKR?
I'm 67, and my chances to see a Illinois NC are limited.

Well, that was uh... something
it resembled this great Chicago landmark

No energy, poor ball handling, poor paint protection, lack of adjustments and so much more. Shame.
I think Adam Miller was the closest to winning his matchup. He played hard.
-
Underwood should have made some adjustments yes but this falls on the NPOY candidate picking the absolute worst time to play like dogshit on both ends of the court. Ayo was making freshman-lite decisions with the ball and getting beat like a drum for lay ups by his man all game long. I'm most disappointed in that.

He hasn't made good second half adjustments,.why would he start today? But if you bring it up, you are just a cynical Chicagoan.

Big ten was definitely overated.

He was terrible. Got beat backdoor. Had 2 or 3 fouls on jump shooter at end of shot clock which were worse than TOs. And then there were the 6 TOs.
And can't really run a PnR.
This game cost him a lot of money.
-

He is awful game coach. Is decent motivation guy. He just rolls the balls out.
Antigua and Coleman got him some players.
We are back in the weeds again assuming Kofi leaves for G league to improve his shot and defense.
-
I recorded the game. Maybe I won't watch. Appears both Ayo and Trent had tough games. Looks like we did not get the transition game going.
Had a bad feeling about this. Deja Vu. I still remember the last time we played Loyola in the tournament. Also, didn't like the early start. Seems like that tends to favor underdogs and the more structured, half court teams. Or not.

Those who ignore Illini history are doomed to getting their nads crushed.
I'm pissed, but at least I was.wearing a cup and still have my nads.
This sucks.
When does football start?

Been saying this all year. Good chance only UM and Iowa only teams advance to S16.

This sucks.
Really? With all your posts it’s almost like you enjoy it.

Go back to where you were hiding for the last year. He sucks on D which is why he is bench player in NBA at best.
He is a bear on skates away from basket.
I was referring to Krutwig. But news bulletin: neither suck, or are even “average.” There isn’t a program out there that wouldn’t be thrilled to have either.
-
Well, nobody ever accused Coach Hulka of being a good game planner.
He got punked. Badly.
He was billed as an Xs and Os advantage when he was hired.

Go back to your bookclub or whatever you do in your angst ridden life.
You have never understood basketball.
Baylor up by 13 at half vs a shitty Wisconsin team that beat this Loyola juggernaut by 14.
Kofi sucked on D today. Krutwig has to be rested constantly because he is slow and out of shape. Yes he did great job making uncontested 8 footers and layups.
We got outcoached because we have one note Coach Hulka at the helm.

No he wasn't. I had coaching friends laugh their ass of when he tried the d3 pressure shit when he got here.
His offense is nonexistent.

Loyola's offense was a thing of beauty today... but our defense was also fucking garbage, they ran that double pick screen all fucking day for layups
and on their defensive end they cut off the passing lanes all day and not once did we back cut on them... like seriously?

Well “coaching up” generally indicates a good understanding of the intricacies of the game. If he wasn’t the guy who gave us an advantage fundamentally and Xs and Os wise, what was all the excitement about? You’re delusional if you don’t think Underwood wasn’t pimped as a “coaching” advantage.

Again, maybe try to answer the question. If he wasn’t billed as a major step up in “coaching” What was his appeal?
His record as a recruiter in ONE YEAR at a major program???
-
So is Krutwig grad transferring to us next year because I'm very much down with that addition.
-
That was the most piss poor effort I’ve ever seen. At no point in the entire game did anyone look like they gave a shit. Loyola ran the Michigan State game plan on us: be physical with our guards and collapse on Cockburn, and it worked. Ayo goes into a shell when he gets bumped a lot, and Curbelo gets angry and sloppy. If the refs were calling it tighter, it wouldn’t have worked, but we failed to adapt. Just like the MSU game.
-
Right behind Austin Peay
1990 5th seed lost in the 1st round to 12th seed Dayton. That team had Gill, Liberty, Bardo, Ervin Small, Andy Kaufman. If I recall correctly, we rallied from a big deficit, but came up just short. Henson's teams had some close losses in the early rounds.
-

There is also practice coaching. I always thought Henson was a better practice coach than game coach. So far, player development seems to be a plus.
Don't know the word for it -- program coach(?), but Underwood has done a good job of building up the roster and creating a winning atmosphere. It took Henson 9 years to reach a similar level.
-
Tempo isn’t wrong here.
Underwood was hailed as a hardass Huggins/Martin guy who ran a dynamic spread offense and hard nosed pressure D. It worked extraordinarily well at SFA.
He was also praised for how he adjusted his scheme to high major basketball at OSU and had them on a tear at the end of his sole season there.
All the question marks were around recruiting. That’s why he went out and hired OA and Chin.
He’s changed his philosophy on both ends of the floor here to fit personnel and competition. He’s done pretty well. Today was a huge disappointment. Got beat by a tough disciplined team. Missed a ton of layups and bunnies. It happens. We knew this team had some serious flaws and each and every one of them were on full display today. There has been *some* continuity in his four years, but this team was playing two freshmen a ton of minutes, and Grandison was in his first year playing at this level.
Yesterday I said that (after today) athletic teams would force Ayo right, double and triple Kofi, and make the other guys beat us. Welp. Frazier 1-10...were Grandison and Williams even at the game? Miller was kind of ok. Curbelo had some solid moments but spent most of the game looking rattled.
I don’t think Brad Underwood all of a sudden sucks as a coach any more today than Chris Holtmann did on Friday. I expect him to learn from this and continue to adjust.

I think all of this is reasonable. And I will say that I don’t think this team had quite the experience you’d want for a national title team. Ayo and Trent were experienced players, but really this was the first time under the microscope for this group. I think that showed today.

Is there a way to read this without having Facebook
A lot of information revealed in this article by the Illini Inquirer's Joey Wagner. The keyword: "drop coverage", which Coach Underwood admitted in the postgame press conference as something he didn't quite expect.
In ball screen defense, drop coverage is often used counter the on-ball screen offense where the screener doesn't have a mid-range game (that is Kofi, he can roll to the basket after setting up a pick but no way he would take a 15-feet jumper).
Drop coverage can be separated into two separate categories: "deep" drop (which Coach Underwood specifically mentioned) and "aggressive" drop. "Deep drop" is used if the ball handler can drive to the basket but does not shoot the ball well from the distance. The on-ball defender move under the screen to stop the ball handler's dribble penetration. Loyola played deep drop to stop Illini's screener (that's Kofi) from moving toward the basket and to limit the ball handler (Curbello)'s ability to penetrate deep, because Curbello has been good at drive to make layups, making passes to Kofi the rolling screener, but does not have range.
Loyola also mixed "hedge and recover" or "aggressive drop" defense if the ball handler is Trent Frazier. By playing "hedge and recover", Loyola's defender of the screener (often Cameron Krutwig, who is an AP All-America 3rd team selection) will move out to chase the ball handler and wait for the on-ball defender to chase or to "recover" his original defensive position before moving back to guard the screener. This "hedge and recover" would form a temporary pocket surrounding Frazier, and took away Frazier's ability to make offensive decision after the screen - we saw that Frazier would be forced to dribble back out and pass the ball to the other side. "Aggressive drop" would have Krutwig to temporarily guard Frazier, using his length to disrupt Frazier's attempt to shoot from distance.
Defensively, Loyola also had traps in the low post, in anticipation of Kofi's hard fights for low post position, so we often saw that Illini's entry pass to Kofi being disrupted and Ayo was often the victim on the "turnover" column. Loyola also was able to disrupt Illini guards' move to catch-and-shoot by making them run harder.
On the offense, Loyola's players can execute that weak-side, high post double screens with all advanced options and at 120% precision. That setting fully utilize Krutwig's capability to pass or to shoot from high post, to cut to the basketball, or to make a low-post, back-to-the-basket scoring move.
Loyola can do any one of the following options:
1. Krutwig on high post, with the ball, make a mid-range jumper or floater because Kofi did not guard him closely;
2. After the point guard pass to Krutwig who is at high post, Krutwig could make a bounce pass to one of the screeners, who rolled to the basket after setting up a screen for the weak-side wing player running a curl;
3. Krutwig could also give the ball back and make a backdoor cut to the basket, and the Loyola guard timely made a lob pass for Krutwig's layup;
4. The weak-side wing player running a curl can eliminate his defender (often Frazier or Adam Miller) using the double screen, create an open three-point shot;
5. That wing player can also dribble drive to the basket, either attack the rim himself (there was one such play in the early game, and Kofi caught him and blocked the shot), or pass to Krutwig who can either shoot or move to the hoop to catch for a layup - that option may also be one of the screeners, who can either shoot or cut to the basket.
6. That can also create mismatch for Krutwig down low, allowing 6-9, 255lbs Krutwig to go against smaller players such as Jacob Grandison who only has a 6-6 and 205lbs body frame but was often the second tallest Illini player on the court.
With all those possible options, Loyola-Chicago as a team can read Illini's defense stances and react quickly to counter Illini's defense. This made Illini's defense suffering, as we often saw that Illini players had to chase their defensive assignments from behind.
Because Loyola can make high percentage shots, that also took away Illini's transition game and limited Ayo's firepower in open court - it's surely difficult to get running if your opponent shot 57% from the floor and you have been chasing from behind.
All these indicate that Illini's pre-game preparation was somehow, somewhat insufficient.
Compare that to Krutwig's post-game statement "no one was doing anything out of their body, out of their mind, we just stuck to the game plan”, and Porter Moser said that “. . . it wasn’t just the last 48 hours . . . a lot of stuff we’ve done was hard work in the summer, hard work in the offseason, this just wasn’t something the flips just switched the last 48 hours. These guys have invested in what we do and they believe in it." I'd say that is highly respectable, in terms of adherence to strict disciplines in defense strategies.
Loyola doesn't want to be Cinderella - they are sending the signal to the remaining 15 teams in the field: this time, they are the Goliath, the Prima Donna.
Based on the above, I think the right reaction from fans should be this: "Despite under-prepared against a very strong and respectable opponent who may well be Final Four worthy or title contender worthy, these Illini kids on the court were only 3 possessions behind Loyola throughout the bulk of the game, and despite Loyola's perfect execution of their game plan, Kofi still managed to score 20 points in the paint, Curbello still managed to make plays on pick-n-rolls, Adam Miller as a freshman and a third or fourth option still managed to score in double digits with high percentage, and the entire team held their composure till the end, and did not collapse like Kansas Jayhawks 24 hours later - should we not blame these kids for not playing harder?"
In the world of college basketball, especially in the Big Dance, coaching staff's pre-game preparation, strategy and counter-strategy, based on season-long efforts, is often the key to success, and this is what makes college basketball worth watching, even from the other side of the Pacific Ocean.
Coach Underwood is certainly responsible. That is a painful lesson for him, which I wish that should have better happened last year this time, instead of this year. No coach is born to be a championship-caliber coach - Coaches are just like us ordinary persons, we are all fallible mortal beings, and we need to learn our lessons, improve, come back and be a better person. Gregg Popovich is now widely regarded as one of the greatest who's ever coached the pro game, but probably not many remembered that when he first took over San Antonio Spurs in 1997, he was often stymied by in-game improvisations from seasoned veteran coaches like Phil Jackson or Don Nelson, and lost winnable games occasionally.
Coach Underwood is also equally responsible for turning around the Illini basketball program, and it was not just recruiting better players to come. We all witnessed the improvements of individual Illini players and team operation on the court, which is real.
I have met Timothy Killeen, President of the University of Illinois System and Robert Jones, Chancellor of the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in person. If they ever come back to Taipei to meet alumni, I would tell them, "don't listen to that guy on Daily Herald because Coach Underwood has been good and deserves to kept."

Here are the relevant parts:
1) They knew Kofi can't shoot beyond 2 feet so took that away before it could develop.
2) They knew we didn't have an actual PG except for Curbelo who could actually read different ball screen defenses quickly enough so they switched them up.
3) They knew Curbelo will not shoot and score from 3 or even midrange for that matter.
4) They have a post who can actually shoot from 15 if has to, passes out of doubles, or score 1 on 1 (you know... your basic stuff a modern post does) so created really awful unsolvable problems for us.
5) He stated we did not bother to guard this said post beyond 3 feet for some unknown reason using a strategy of forcing him to take really difficult uncontested 8 footers.
6) They were better coached and prepared for months implying we fucked the dog since last summer.
7) Our staff did not prepare at all and fucked the dog especially this past week.
8) He says we should be happy and applaud our players for competing so well considering our staff were deer in the headlights and did fuck the dog in question.
9) He also somehow equates being down 9-13 pts the whole game is only 3 possessions.
10) And finally, he reminds everyone he gets an audience with the President and Chancellor of Illinois and you don't.
In summary - This rich expatriate guy says we should try and enjoy this loss. Coach Hulka will be like fine wine aging to perfection from this experience of learning about such complexities in life and basketball.
The shorter version is:
Jobu had it right all along.
Our staff got buttfucked.

Yeah. It is like getting a job interview for the position you have wanted your whole life, it was pretty much guaranteed you would get it if you just didn't do anything really stupid or showed up drunk, you would then be set for life, but you then started crying in the interview and couldn't answer any questions.

Yeah, I skipped thru all the sugarcoated bullchit.
Bottom line is their best win is still Drake, so I don’t give a damn what their metrics are and that’s that.
Good team? Maybe, but they were seeded #8 for a reason and it’s because they beat goddamn nobody. The excuse parade from most is enough. Underwood got outcoached and outclassed, the end...

While I do agree with most of this, Loyola can only play who is on Loyola’s schedule. They might’ve beaten an Illinois or anybody else in the B1G if they played them. Same can be said about Gonzaga. I understand they played a tougher non-con than Loyola, but there’s always teams that are better than what you think at a lower level. Hence the upsets in the tourney every year.

🤣🤣🤣 Come on now. I analyzed their schedule. If they were so great they would have went out and played a Gonzaga type Non Conf schedule.
They played at Wisconsin and that was it and got rolled and also lost to Richmond and yes I know what the excuse will be it was December. So I guess they got a ton better beating up the MVC and beating Bradley by 7. Effing BRADLEY. The excuses are getting stale at this point.
Scouting report was simple. Guard the 3 point line and handle Krutwig and what happened was Krutwig killed us and they didn’t need the 3 as they killed us from the mid range on in to Krutwig. Underwood got smoked...The end

Those of us that know Underwood crapped the bed in epic fashion.
Then you’ve got everyone else doing the following. “Ball screens” “something and recover” “Loyola’s metrics” “Loyola should’ve been a 3 or 4 seed” and the list goes on and on and on.

Almost none of you here are interesting enough to write more than two small paragraphs. Knock it off.
Here comes Mr. Buzzkill to save the day🤣🤣🤣
-
Maybe we should ask him if he's having trouble at home. Probably shouldn't inquire about deaths in the family, tho.

Fuck off, dirtbag. Is that better?
-
I don't think dirt will mind. It's as dumb as Judy.
-
Jeez. Someone is angry tonight.
I’m fine. You guys literally have me LOLing
-
I kinda don’t care. He can either get over his little temper tantrum or he can go fuck himself.
Doesn’t affect me either way.
The fact that you don’t care about my feelings has really hurt me...
-
You are an embarrassment to the moniker.
I don’t know that I’ve ever been too concerned with the moniker.
What I do know is that I’ve made valid points concerning Ayo and Underwood that have yet to be countered other than the typical, but, but, but Ayo is an All American and Genius brought him in.
What did it get us besides arguably the most embarrassing College basketball program in America right now minus maybe Ohio State.
-
Damn, h.q. is back. Was looking somewhere to vent about the crapfest of a game. Still in disbelief and anger. Probably been hammered with posts about the gameplan. I didn't read the thread. But what the hell were the coaches doing? Not a single adjustment anywhere i really seen. And why the hell wasnt kofi guarding the krutweg dork? Get out there on him and dont let him make a easy pass especially when the guards were getting beat back door over and over again. It was baffling to say the least. Still pissed about this game and the tournament now is pretty much unwatchable. Just a shit show.

Let’s be honest here. If I were the coach hypothetically I would’ve just fed Kofi the entire game, but that was the problem all year. Too many mouths to feed led by the ultimate mouth feeder Batman and half the time he was just doing that And 1 streetball stuff. So to me this isn’t on Kofi. It’s not on Miller or Curbelo either.
Put it where it belongs. Underwood. Ayo and Frazier shooting a combined 5 for 20 and the guards for the most part played zero defense. Kofi can’t do it himself.
-
Never blamed Kofi. More on Underwood and the gameplan. Im saying put Kofi on that dude out high and dont let him get easy passes to wherever the wanted to go. It was a stupid defensive gameplan. At least change something at the half.
-

You mean your “we’re better without Ayo” theory based on two games?

Most of the people I talk to in the Peoria area won’t come out publically and say it, but they’ll say it to my face that Ayo is a team killer. He buzz killed this team first half of the season. He gets hurt and they play better without him. He comes back and they’re still winning, but it just didn’t look quite right and the reason is the “team” aspect was gone when he’s in there. I get it he’s a great athlete and enjoy the NBA, but I’m not exactly going to miss him. If Kofi comes back we’re fine. If not welcome to the NIT.
-
You mean your “we’re better without Ayo” theory based on two games?
Prove it wrong then.
They sure looked good against Nebraska and Wisconsin. Manhandled #2 on the road by 23. But again I get it. Because it’s Ayo the “savior” he gets a pass. Shoot another 40 times chasing 20.
I’ve yet to see one poster give me a valid response other than. “But he’s our all American” “he’s Batman!”...
-
You mean your “we’re better without Ayo” theory based on two games?
And let’s be honest. The Maryland game was the last one I watched until the Michigan game as I just happened to want to see if it was for real without Ayo. Rewatch the Maryland game and you’ll see why people stopped watching and I’m sure some stopped well before that. Baylor rolled us. We couldn’t win the border war. Took a last second shot to beat Ohio.
That’s the reality here. They sold us on a Lamborghini preseason and gave us a pinto. By the end of the season it was upgraded to a Corvette, but not quite Lamborghini status.
Go watch that Maryland game again and you’ll understand why people wanted to throw their TVs out the window.
-
You mean your “we’re better without Ayo” theory based on two games?
But I’ll admit that I bought into the “hype” late in the season even though I should’ve known better. Rather than trust my instincts like I have over the last 15 years with the miserable mess I call Illini basketball, it sucked me back in for a few weeks only to punch me in the nuts again.
But all the warning signs for a “Loyola” like performance were there early in the season, so at the end of the day it didn’t surprise me, I just expected Genius to make some adjustments at some point, but he showed he’s incapable of doing that and yes I heard he said he tried everything 🤣🤣🤣, which is lip service for I got owned and don’t want to own it.

Have you seen Kofi try to guard people more than 10 feet from the basket? It’s not that he didn’t guard him...he couldn’t guard him. This is exactly why the NBA has gone away from behemoths in the middle.
Kofi is our rim protector and defensive anchor. He’s great within 5’ of the rim and borderline useless anywhere else. Krutwig pulled him away from the basket and they gashed us on easy cuts to the rim because he wasn’t there to erase them. It also wore Kofi the fuck out guarding him. And Krut straight up backed Kofi down and scored on him a couple of times early.
So the staff tried Giorgi and that didn’t work so they had Kofi sag off and Krutwig took advantage of that, too. And when they got penetration off the pick and roll, Kofi got caught several times hedging and they found Krutwig on the lob.
Kofi hadn’t seen a guy with that skill set being used in that way in his college career. Versatility is the name of today’s game and Kofi’s lack of versatility is fairly well documented. Kofi is truly dominant at what he does, but he’s only been playing basketball for five years. The other day he got abused by a high basketball IQ versatile doughy balding white guy with a porn ‘stache. Shit happens. That’s kinda the beauty and the fuckery of the tournament.
The biggest problem is that since the offense runs through Krutwig, we didn’t have a way to hide Kofi defensively and we couldn’t do without him offensively. And there’s simply no long athletic lockdown defender on the roster we could throw at Krutwig. Giorgi clearly wasn’t up to the task. If you throw Grandison or DMW at him he’ll back them down and score at will. He’s a great passer and they cut well so doubling is a problem.
Truly a horrible matchup for our personnel on the defensive end. I was more troubled by our inability to adjust and win matchups on the offensive end. Obviously they’re statistically a great defensive team and it showed.
Watching Kofi trying to pick and roll 22’ from the basket as Ayo got iced over and over and over again was absolutely maddening. Kofi got his 20 but they made him work surprisingly hard for most of them. Missed quite a few around the basket that normally go down. Trent had a guy in his pocket all game but had some good looks that just didn’t drop.
Even though I thought the team did a fairly good job of not panicking, it makes you wonder how seeing those misses combined with their relentless efficiency affected our guys mentally down the stretch.

IMO, the choke job by #1 seed Illinois was more embarrassing. Most self-proclaimed experts had Illinois in the Final Four and the championship game. A few even had the Illini winning it all. No injured players. Illinois is a basketball school, right? Clearly the football program is nothing special.
OTOH, no so-called expert had Ohio State winning March Madness this year. A few delusional individuals might have picked the Buckeyes to make the Final Four even without F Kyle Young. Apparently those individuals forgot OSU is first and foremost a football school. Basketball is merely a diversion until spring practice starts.

We could have played any sort of Half ass matchup zone and stopped their backdoor layup drill at least and had Kofi just stand in the middle. We don't have a zone. We are real men. We only play man. Total joke.
Ayo got beat at least 3 or 4 times on simple backdoors. He also fouled a jump shooter twice at end of shot clock who was forcing some desperate shit. He alone cost us 10-12 points on bad defense. It wasn't just him being exposed as not a legit lead/point guard.
Dirty little secret. He is pretty medicore defender. Started shooting the passing lanes late in season, but otherwise not much on D.

I can’t. It’s unprovable either way. I just know that it’s likely nonsense.

Has the "we play man defense only" approach done anything good in the last 30 years? The team we played Sunday ran a clinic on how to beat an average man defense with a post player who can pass.

No, it’s unprovable. I said “it’s unprovable either way.” We’d need more than a two game sample size to reach a definitive conclusion.

Sick of hearing about Loyola. Fucking Underachiever. Getting completely pantsed by Porter Moser. Bullshit. Where is that fuck Guenther Lite's apology letter to alums for the embarrassing performance on Sunday? Fucking same old stuff in Champaign. Focusing on the wrong stuff (oh, we should have won the B1G title even though I voted to use a standard that would work against us!). The whole school, from top to bottom, continues to be run by morons who don't get the role of sports. Better sports = more cash for the school as a whole. Dumbfucks.

Abilene Christian claims they made $ 121 million from their NCAA appearance.
We sort of lost three recruits from ours. LOL.

its no coincidence that sports have been an afterthought since Blago decided to change the board of trustees to be politically appointed rather than any sort of democratic process...
all you have as trustees now are these complete morons who could give two shits less about the school, most of the time they didn't even go there, making big decisions about it
and in pure Illinois politics fashion, its a fucking dumpster fire ripe with corruption as usual

The switch from elected trustees to an appointed position took place in 1996. You can blame former Governor Jim Edgar, who led the efforts to pass the legislation that changed the governance system. Blagojevich, who was in the Illinois House of Representatives at the time, voted against the trustee appointment bill.

my bad, it was Blago that was using the university BOT for clout admissions

In addition to Blagojevich (remember Tony Rezko?), other state officials implicated in providing special influence over admissions were John Cullerton, Michael Madigan, Alexi Giannoulias, Tim Johnson, Bill Mitchell and Chapin Rose. Definitely a bipartisan affair.
And most of the students who benefited from political connections came from elite and affluent high schools.

Give him another 15 minutes and he'll be ready to blame all of 2017-2020 on the DemoRats. Just like his people did with Obama and TARP.

I think people are too busy blaming the Refugee influx completely on Biden even though it has been federal policy and law since 1980.
