Title: AYO
Post by: Lkdog on February 13, 2021, 10:54:38 AM
I have never been a huge Ayo fan, but he has learned to work within his limits, only shoot wide open threes, and is really maximizing what he does best in midrange and when there are open lanes.
Passing better, rebounding better, getting to his left better, better crossover, guarding a little bit, and even dunking.
TOs are still an issue, but will take it as part of the other improvements in last few weeks.

I think he gives us a shot to go deep in NCAA as he draws fouls at high rate now even when they know he is coming.
I think he will be in NBA and play.
All credit to the kid.

Ayo has improved a lot as a passer and a ball handler this year, which gives him a shot at the NBA. He still has to improve his shooting some more, but I think he will.

Yeah, one thing you can never say about him is that he isn’t a hard worker. He has worked his ass off to get where he’s at.

Even as an Illini fan I never really quite understood the hype he got until recently. Maybe it was all the hype out of HS expecting a one and done type talent.

Garza kinda the same way. There’s not much wow factor to their respective games then the announcer says they have 25+ points and a pile of other stats and I’m thinking whaaaaat..

Both are great college players that have big NBA question marks although Ayo seems to have worked hard enough to be playing himself into a decent draft window.

I hope Ayo cements his legacy and draft status in the late season and tourney like Deron did, although Ayo’s draft ceiling certainly isn’t that high. Hopefully we can parlay the Ayo and Kofi success stories into some elite replacement recruits.

Yesterday on the Scorat Boar, one of their faceless moderators wrote that Frank Williams, while good, was never "in the same zip code as Ayo."

The rest of the community took turns whipping him.

Prior to this year I would say there was really not much to discuss. Ayo was a pretty nice college scorer with no left hand who couldn't guard.
Ayo has shown a lot more game in last few weeks actually. I believe it was OSU and MD who totally took away his right hand and he had to adjust.
Somewhere in last month he developed both a crossover and the ability to dunk in traffic in games.

His O numbers are quite a bit are better than Frank's across the board. His Royal Frankness was waaaaay better defender on ball and off ball. Better passer. Better ballhandler.
Better BB IQ. Played in an era where college BB was stronger. Frank was just fucking money in crunch time.

Ayo will be a 1st team AA on most lists.
If we make EE I would call it a wash. Otherwise- advantage Frank.

Multiple replies in this thread talking about Ayo being a hard worker.

I'm going to look into the archives to see if I ever hear that said from the cheap seats about Frank

Although I remember the flak Frank took for coasting/dogging, I don’t know much about his work ethic. I think it’s safe to say he was a more naturally gifted basketball player than Ayo.

They both have a lot of natural talent.

Frank was lazy in the same way that Amanda Knox conspired to kill her roommate.

People project their ideas and fantasies onto others. It's not fair, but it happens. And sometimes you spend a year in prison for it.

It feels gross just to be involved in a conversation where someone says Amanda Knox is anything but a victim of idiocy, bad policing and conspiracy trolls on the web.

That said, it wouldn't stun me if you were actually serious.

I was in my first semester of law school when hte OJ case concluded. We were all let out of class to watch it, in the big atrium. All the black students cheered.

OJ had means, motive and opportunity. The LAPD had a history of abhorrent & unlawful treatment of black people; including violence, murder and manufacturing evidence. The lesson of the OJ verdict is that if you want to allow your country to be "policed" by tribalist warriors, you'd better not allow any out-group members on the jury.

And yet here YOU are, spreading conspiracy theories yourself. Seriously can’t make this shit up. Like you legitimately play off your opinions like they’re facts. And then anyone who has a different one than you, you belittle as if they’re somehow beneath you. It’s quite comical actually. The sad part is you have other trolls on this board who side with you.

Yes, I’m sure Amanda Knox killed her roommate in a Satanic sex game and then removed her own DNA from the scene, just like the prosecutor said.

It definitely wasn’t the guy who had a history of armed break-ins, whose fingerprints and bloody palm print were found at the scene, who fled the country immediately after the murder, and was tried, convincted, and imprisoned for the murder.

Kind of hard to believe, but Ayo is serious contender for POY in college BB if he keeps this up. He is at a totally different level now.
We have real shot for deep run if we D and reduce TOs.

Title: Re: AYO

It's hard to see through the smoke screen if its there, but as of yesterday Brad said Ayo was day to day but did not indicate anything other than a Broken nose.  If Ayo only other injury suffered was from a moderate or minor concussion from the MSU game, typical protocol is to sit out a week, which could make him eligible to play tonight if that was indeed the case.

Title: Re: AYO
Post by: Custard on March 02, 2021, 10:11:36 AM
I’m not sure I’d play him if I were Underwood unless he’s feeling close to 100%. Otherwise he doesn’t help the team much and he’s at risk to aggravate the injury. Seeding committee isn’t gonna punish us too bad for losing @MI and @OSU without the potential NCAA POY able to play. On the other hand sure would be nice to have him lead us to 1-2 huge wins this week to solidify a 1 seed. And I am sure he’s dying to play.

My thought FWIW is that if he plays it will be score based.
If we are within 8-10 points he goes 25-30 min.
If it gets out of hand, he sits in second half of second half.

I don't see a scenario where he is cleared to go but only plays 10-15 minutes.

Who knows. It's good he is warming up as we will have him in BTT and NCAA

I don’t really see much argument for Garza over Ayo for NPOY, yet even today many seem to be saying Garza leads. Missing a few games hurt Ayo’s momentum, but he did come back to lead the team to a 1 seed clinching win on the road at #7. Ayo’s season, Illinois resurgence, his story, his historic stat line, the triple doubles is just too perfect...plus Garza got it last year. Only reason I can think of to justify giving it to Garza is to spread the wealth a little. But then again Kofi is getting completely hosed in most of these lists.

I could see some weird splits between BTPOY and NPOY and one of the Gonzaga guys playing D3 teams sliding in.
I like Kofi a lot, but he has a lot of competition at his slot in BIG and nationally.

Ayo has made quite a case down the stretch and Garza has been just pretty good.
If UM loses today we are ranked #2 in country and best team in BIG which is arguably a notch above the B12.

Ayo didn't even play last game.

We know you love Ayo. He was very good here.
We could be better team this year for a lot of reasons.
Doesn't make him a bad player.
You seem to be taking this concept very personal.

I’ll be completely honest. I don’t follow nearly as close as I used to, and didn’t follow the off season at all. Who are these 5 new shooters?

I think referring to Plummer who is a proven threat from 3.
And then Hutcherson who is supposedly a shooter.
And then the 3 freshman who are supposed to be able to shoot.

Will see how this plays out.

Deadly. Certainly more than makes up for the loss of a Wooden Award finalist.

Especially looking forward to seeing Shooter McGavin play for the Illini.

Can’t wait to watch him chip with two fat naked bikers having sex in the woods off of 17.

We added a bouncy big in Payne which we desperately needed for help with ball screen defense.

We needed a proven 3 point shooter that can get his own shot and make contested threes. Plummer is a veteran who has done that in a P5 league that smoked the B1G in the tourney last year. He replaces Ace Puppy.

National sports writers have been in to see practices and think Hutcherson is the real deal. He had a very good, highly efficient exhibition the other night (admittedly against a horrible opponent). But he looked like a star on a team with two likely AAs. He’s probably the guy that most makes up for the loss of Ayo due to his length and athleticism.

The guards will have to replace Ayo’s production by committee. Frazier will step back into a lead scoring role whereas he took a backseat to Ayo the last few years. We already know he can do it. We saw it his freshman year and when Ayo went down last season.

DMW and Curbelo will almost certainly score more ppg than last year.

I don’t expect much from the freshmen other than spot minutes , garbage time or if we get into foul trouble.

Put this with enough depth to play 40 minutes of defense. I'm good.

Ayo does appear to be earning more meaningful time. The 6-6 game has to help his confidence and he hit 2 threes. His stroke looks a little better.
They play him off the ball which is key as he is never going to be a lead guard, so his TO's are down which is good.

He was struggling before the last game (5-20 overall) but maybe this will help him.
Questions were could he score a little bit at this level, not turn it over, shoot the three enough to keep them honest and open up the drive on closeouts, and guard anybody.

So far not bad for him.

So in other words, the questions were “could he play at this level?” I can’t imagine anyone thought they were going to have him playing with the ball in his hands at this point in his career.

Our staff and his people and he did. We were doing an NBA marketing tour for him all year. Part of the reason the Miller clan was pissed off. He wanted that also. The 2020 team was better overall as Feliz and Trent played on the ball more, Ayo off more in the second half. We were a really good team down the stretch.

He wanted to be seen as a combo guard at next level and is certainly working on his game to try and be able to do that
to increase his value. Does a lot of things fairly well. He works hard and he could stick around.

Well I never posted on this board but I said he’d never be a 1st rounder.  He wasn’t.

I think his niche is what he’s doing with the Bulls.  Off the bench, play defense.  His ceiling is a guy like Iman Shumpert. He’ll never be an All Star, but he’s a guy that can contribute.

Ayo really makes Coby White look like an absolute bust

4 month old article on Ayo that seems pretty accurate. Talks about a  "hypermodern pass, dribble, shoot wing" replacing the "traditional 3-and-D player" and predicts that role for Ayo..Hybrid 3&D and point forward?

Says: "Ayo is a fantastic decision-maker who was able to master advanced concepts while still playing at the college level"

Ayo reminds me of guys like Lavert, KCP, Shumpert where they aren’t great at anything, and if you give them a big contract it’s going to look stupid, but are still good enough pieces to be in the rotation of NBA teams.  Defend, dribble, be a threat on offense, fairly long wing players.

Then you compare those guys who have long NBA careers to more hyped guys that flame out such as Romeo Langford and wonder why they make careers and others don’t.

The guy I missed on was Lamelo Ball.  I thought he would suck in the NBA based on his lack of athleticism, his average play in lower leagues overseas, and he’s on his way to possibly the Hall of Fame

I was way wrong on his potential in the NBA. I still don’t think he has a super high ceiling but it sure looks like he’s going to be a really solid player. He has absolutely transformed his body and his skill set by focusing strictly on basketball. He doesn’t even look like the same player as a year ago.

It looks like he actually grew a bit

he looks taller and longer than I remember him here, his conditioning has obviously been A+ while focusing full time on basketball

glad to see him having success for the hometown franchise and that's always a good thing for the Illini program as well, couldn't have a better ambassador, he's such a good kid

Ayo is shooting 42.4% from 3.  I doubt anyone thought he’d be able to do that at the NBA level given his low starting point on his form and his primarily midrange game in college.

Playing nearly 20 minutes a game on a good team, as a 2nd rd rookie is a phenomenal accomplishment.  I don’t pay much attention to numbers put up on bad teams but Ayo is doing it on a playoff team.  Very impressive.

Just watched the highlights. Oddly enough, my takeaway is how much college ball retarded the speed of both Ayo and Malcolm’s growth.

Ayo was always awesome in transition and in the half court he was able to use his length, talent, and IQ to get to his spot with the ball, even if it looked clumsy and awkward much of the time. But he did it because he could and that iso became his game.

Watching him now the ball doesn’t stick, he moves great off the ball, he’s chiseled, bouncy and quick, and his shot mechanics look much better. All in a matter of months. If you look back at film and photos of him from as recently as March, he looks like a kid in comparison.

Malcolm also doesn’t even look like the same guy as college. He essentially played the 4 a big chunk of his career here and carried a lot of a extra mass to do so. Dude is cut up now and moves completely differently.

He’s had a great rookie year, but would have to blow the doors off the rest of the way to get it or even have a shot. He’s currently like 12 or 13th in odds. Mobley is the heavy favorite for ROY.

Old News, this was reported during season, and to my knowledge hasn't been publically reiterated since by Ayo. That said I would still tend to think he would feel this way, as it has worked out for him very well. Most had doubts about him as well....he proved them wrong.

Yeah. Coby had a lot more especially with that stretch in second quarter where he scored like 7 straight and Caruso keeps eating up minutes. Throw in Patrick Williams being healthy and thought different position it pushes Ayo further down the bench.
Title: Re: AYO

Donovan said he was gonna rely on veterans in the playoffs is a dumb move. Ayo still needs the tick he was getting because Caruso definitely isn’t gonna get it done now or in the future. He’s on the team for his leadership and experience. Let him do that from the bench and in spot minutes.  Dumb move by Donovan.

DeRozan lost them the game with his terrible shot selection and shooting. He literally shoots the dumbest shots I’ve ever seen and at dumbass times. Frustrating as hell.

Well, to be fair the injuries they have had have hurt.
Ayo is not really a full time starter level NBA guard yet.
He can hit the three in selective takes when wide open at OK clip.
When defenses contest more he is struggling.
He is not, nor ever was a natural PG.

He has worked really hard to his credit and is valuable minutes guy off the bench.
Honestly has surpassed what many thought he could do so far.

They need Ball back and they need shooters.

Didn’t like the Vuc trade when they made it. He was already like 30 or 31? You guys know how I feel about giving up 2 1st rounders…

Vuc’s numbers are really good looking, but it’s deceiving. The Bulls have 3 really good pieces but they just don’t go together as a team. DeRozan, Lavine, and Vuc on paper stats-wise looks tough, but not near enough in today’s NBA. You’re not gonna get very far with that as your core and they’re stuck in pergatory. Lonzo Ball isn’t gonna change that either in my opinion. Just a poorly constructed roster that isn’t gonna go anywhere.

Agreed with Tempo and Judy. This is on AKME for assembling a roster full of poor fits. The Vuc trade was a disaster when it happened. He just hangs around the 3 point line most of the time. Lavine is frequently hurt and is mostly a garbage time stat padder when healthy. He might have the emptiest 21PPG you’ll ever see. The Bulls were being carried by Derozan playing at an MVP level. To me, AKME isn’t looking like much of an upgrade over GarPax right now. They ran it back with the same core hoping for better results.

I’m not gonna blame Donovan and I liked the hire when it was initially announced. Seems to me the players checked out since the 2nd half of last year.
Maybe getting the fuck out of Chicago would be best for him.

They don’t play above the rim, they don’t play defense, and they don’t shoot 3s. That’s the wrong trifecta in today’s NBA.

The LaVine situation was a tough one. He’d “earned” the contract, but you kinda knew you’d regret giving it to him.

Yep this is spot on. Bad decision giving it to him knowing he wouldn’t take you anywhere significant. But you can see why they would “reward” him.

Damn, that’s sad. No idea what would wanna make someone do that but he had it made. Guessing there’s gotta be some sort of chemical imbalance in his brain or something to cause stuff like that. Hope he gets the help he needs. That sounds bad and definitely no joke.

Whatever he is trying to do doesn't seem to be working as it seems to be an ongoing issue.

I have been in MH field for decades. Most psychotropics are prescribed by family doctors-not psychiatrists. They have minimal training.
Psychiatrists are in short supply, do limited medication monitoring, and are kind of "I have a hammer (favorite med) so everything looks like a nail". It is a real crapshoot to get high quality psychiatric care.

They can be, for sure, if there is adequate accurate diagnosis and monitoring.
Another interesting view is that regular exercise has as good or better impact for many for mental health issues.

It is a complicated interaction between emotional and physical for overall well being.

Which is why places like this are helpful for a few laughs which are also very important to mental health.  ;D

I don't come here for mental health advice.  ;D
Sometimes it takes someone else to convince the person that the drug is not helpful or that it's got side effects and contacting the doc should be the next step.
Too often, 'it's what the doc prescribed, so I take it'. Or they stop taking it entirely.

The traditional medical model is limited.
I always recommend other support resources or therapy in conjunction with any medication.
The research is pretty clear that meds alone are not as effective.

Bulls end their season, and Ayo ends a shitty 2nd season.  He cost himself a lot of money this year.

Rookie year:
27 mpg
Shot 52/38/68
3.3 asts/ 1.4 TO

2nd year:
26 mpg
Shot 49/31/81
2.6 asts/1.4 TO

Cost himself lot of money

Ayo gets a qualifying offer from the Bulls. If I were the Phoenix Suns, I’d be extending one as well. The style they wanna play with those weapons on the wings would be a good fit for Ayo in my opinion. Tons of transition opportunities. They also need a PG.

Phoenix Suns would do well in trying to get Ayo and Meyers both with what little $$$ they have to go around. They need to get quality players that are established and can bring something to the table.

I think Leonard would fit in very well in Phx.

The Suns need 3 point shooting. Ayo can't shoot. He sure as heck cannot run any point.

He can help a team in NBA, but really is kind of a fringe guy until he develops a 3ball.

Fringe is exactly what the Suns can afford first off, and as far as 3pt shooting goes....Durant was 31dt in %, regular season, Booker was 3rd in playoffs, and Craig was 18th, Payne was 24th and even Shamet (now gone was ranked).....I think they can do just fine with having those guys as well as having Booker lead the playoffs at 33.7 per and also58.5% FG overall in playoffs, and 50.8% 3's in the playoffs.

3 pt shooting is not what the Suns are missing....they need reliable players, proven who can contribute and not cost them max contracts to go with their big 3 of Booker/Beal/Durant. Ayo/Leonard would fit needs and be very functional without breaking the bank now. Leonard would also add some rim protection, some athletic ability and also some 3's as well.

There are a ton of guys like Ayo trying to stay in the league. He is just a guy.
He isn't going to make a big difference for anybody except as a usable guy on second unit for a few minutes a game.

Suns only made 11 3 pointers a game and were 17th in the league by the way.

He's a top 10-15 player in his draft class so far, plus he's durable so far. Granted that's a large pool but market for that sort of bench seems to be worth like 3-5M/year. If someone wants to overpay so be it.
