This floor is an eyesore.
I might have to watch The Egg Bowl instead

Yeah this floor is horrific! Like we’re playing in an And 1 tournament…

Let’s fucking go! Got it down to only 8 and they’ve dominated so far. We can pull this out if we get our shit together! This is basically a home game for UCONN…

They’re letting UCONN be way more physical on defense than the Illini…

Our lack of man-to-man defense ability is getting exploited by UCONN.

And I can’t stand Dan Hurley. The guy is so unlikable it makes me sick watching his antics on the sideline…

43-32 at halftime. Need to step up and play lights out in the 2nd half or this one is gonna get ugly…

All in All, lucky to be where we are 43-32

Less Mirkovic 3's, more Petrovic PG, Boswell plays just as hard/good in the 2nd half, and make Ball make some more 3's.

Play some zone more often back and forth to mix up the rhythm that Uconn likes to get into and we should still be fine overall. UCONN came out on fire and cooled and then got hot again....we play better 2nd halves than 1st usually. Big Z is playing well on D for us, really liked what Lee was doing on Ball also.

Rebound, rebound, rebound.

89-83 UCONN wins however. 13 vs 5 that is still a good showing.

Boswell with 13 and 6 and Mirkovic with 6 and 6. Everybody else with the other 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Personal Fouls are even at the half?????? 3's are literally the only difference in this game. They made a few more, we shot less (thank goodness) and that is the half.

Boswell with 13 and 6 and Mirkovic with 6 and 6. Everybody else with the other 13 points and 7 rebounds.

BU needs to find the Mirkovic lane and keep that guy in it for now....he has an immense overall skill set, however gets into look at me now shootin 3's too often. Use your weight/size/IQ mid to low post, that will open up way more 3's later on.

NO ONE, other than Boswell scores for 7 + minutes I believe they said, we cut it to 10 (fluke) and then chuck 3 missed 3's, a turnover, and fouls....damn with or without the entire team healthy and practicing, we ARE NOT who we thought we were YET.

March I still believe this team will be a very tough out before sweet 16, after that...anything is possible win or lose.

The reliance on 3's is smoke and mirrors, we just don't shoot them consistantly well enough to be that team that can rely on them.

Probably didn't matter but there's no way you can conclude that based on what was on-screen.

Didn't hit the rim at all, over the back, 2 seconds left, Smith dribbles back, NO WAY that counted in original shot clock....NO WAY it had any bearing on the outcome either though. Bad call, and more importantly Bad overall ILLINI loss

Boswell A
Lee A-defense only
Humrichous C
Big Z C
Tomi F
Wagler (F)reshman
Stoyokavic (was he even here today-F)
Davis F
Petrovic B-
Mirkovic D

Coaching staff D, can't keep doing the 3 dance, drive, get into lane, good things happen.

Zone today off an on, need more of this with Big Z being the defender.

Tomi had a double double.
Petrovic was 1-7 from the floor with 3 turnovers and we don't handle the ball well in the lane.

We don't handle the ball well in the lane.

The primary ball handlers do, they can still penetrate and dish, problem is our offense ONLY calls for the dishes to be 3's...we need back cuts/back doors, especially on over playing teams, along with some easy 12-15' shots. That with strong defense AND some 3's will win most games for us. 6-29 today is horrendous.

Would love to see a starting 5 of Humrichous, Boswell, Tomi, Wagler, Mirkovic, 2nd Unit Big Z, Andrej, and Petrovic, Davis and Lee sprinkled in with some mix. Andrej is really good in the lane/driving/short pull ups, but overall I think he is soft.

I’d like to try the novel concept of getting our 7 footers shots near the rim and not just from 3.

I loved that one possession where Bam got the rebound by the free throw line then just dribbled facing the basket instead of taking a wide open jumper or passing it to Wagler who was all alone under the basket. He then dribbled out and shot a 25’ fade away 3 as the shot clock expired. Game in a nutshell right there.

The 4 point slop shot play was a back breaker when they had been ice cold and we could have cut it to 4 point lead on the other end. But who am I kidding, we weren’t even drawing iron on 3s at that point.

Tomi got all of his when it didn't really matter, game was out of hand....that said, fine he got a double double, we all can get one at any burger shop. Petrovic may have had 3 turnovers, but him and Bam together is how this team will win/lose moving forward. He is a true lead guard that is JUST now getting minutes to make a difference.

Take away the 4 point play and we would have had a chance to cut it to 4. Tomi had his points by then by then and maybe his rebounds.

I unfortunately (or fortunately in this case) was not able to catch this or the Bears game due to work obligations.

Sounds like it was more of the same 3 point brick contest with a John Groce special moral victory comeback at the end to cap things for us.

But let's not lose sight of the important things: Bradislav Underwoodivic knows how to rock a tracksuit!

Also agree we should rotate in Petrovic more if he's fully healthy now, possibly starting over Wagler or Mirkovic depending on opponent.
Title: Re: Illini vs UCONN

Have to be careful with Petro in rotations because he’s small and can’t guard anyone but does some nifty stuff on the offensive end. Like all the euros, needs to learn that the speed and physicality on defense isn’t what he’s used to. Has a tendency to drive it all the way to the cup and jump and hope like hell he finds a guy he can pass it to.

How many layups did we miss in this game? Reminded me of the game against them in the tourney and a game at northwestern that same year I believe where we looked sped up and just missed bunnies like it was our job.

This wasn’t a game where I felt like we were outclassed or didn’t belong. Make wide open layups like we usually do/hit wide open threes at the normal clip and we win, perhaps comfortably. We’ve got a bunch of new guys figuring out how to play together and two key players just back off injury so there’s some rotation question marks.

I didn’t love seeing Davis in there so much late but I guess that lineup was kind of working despite him not doing anything useful.

UCONN just took over one of the #1 seeds in current bracketology....this helps our loss to them. However in this projection we would be in a BRUTAL bracket imo.

Our losses are to three top 15 teams. Two of those were as close as they get and one was a 7 point game late when we got fucked on a crazy ass 4 point play instead of getting the ball back to cut it to a 4-5 point game. We’ve beaten two top 15ish teams. Does help those teams that beat us and we beat keep winning.

Good luck but if you're not watching the games, cough cough, it's difficult to say.

Down by 2, you miss the front end of a 1 and 1 and they get the rebound and hit a 3.
So down by 5.
You foul, they make 2 at the line. Down by 7.
You get the ball back and miss a 3. They get the rebound and get a bucket. Down by 9.

All because of 1 missed free shot.

And I don't know why I did this for ThePAMan other than he was right then and he's right now.

The 2022-2023 team had the worst free shot percentage since the 2007-2008 team, which was horrendous.

One could probably say 'that's a problem.'

But they couldn't shoot from 3 either. 339th out of 363 teams for percentage.

You can watch the games, probably for the 1st time!, and see which games were impacted by failed one-and-ones. The rest of us were watching contemporaneously and noted the problem.

We were tied at Purdue with 1:17 to go.
We missed 3 free shots and fouled 4 times in the last 1:17.
Purdue hit 7 free shots in the last 1:17

Miss free shots and you're forced to get a stop or foul. We fouled.

I guess technically, Rodgers could be called a guard, though he played a combo role. Regardless, you’re picking nits. It was inexperienced players doing all the damage to the FT % for that game.

For every extra 3 made, that’s a guaranteed extra 3 points. For every extra FT made, that’s (being very very very generous on the very high side) an extra 1.67ish points. 3 > 1.67, so yeah, 3 point shooting was the bigger problem.

If you are putting up bad 3s because you are behind due to less points through missed FSs, that's due to missed FSs. Put having to foul in this same category.

There really aren’t that many scenarios where you can say with certainty that poor free throw shooting is what caused a loss. It’s not as simple as looking at the final score and then adding made FTs back to it and determining that would have made the difference.

That team was a really poor FS shooting team. It’s almost a certainty that it cost us at least one game, which is apparently the threshold for validity.

ThePAMan's post asked if free shots were going to be a concern off of what he had seen.

Somehow that became 'the bigs missing free shots in a 30 point win wasn't important.
Which is completely separate than whatThePAMan posted.

Somehow it then became a guy who doesn't watch games wanting to know which game we lost.

Someone simply asked if free shot shooting was a concern.

Yeah, great example of a game we’d have won if we shot better free shots. This is like playing pickup basketball
against 5 year olds.

Yeah, had we made those two FTs at the end could have lost by 4 instead of 6. Probably cost someone a cover somewhere.

Yeah, had we made those two FTs at the end we wouldn't have fouled 4 times to give up 7 free shot points so we would have won by 3.

The 3 missed free throws probably had nothing to do with it.
