UCONN
They do not do well in fast break points, or fast break defense.
They are not any better than us really with rebounds per game.
We actually have a better scoring offense, per game.
They are better FG%, very half court driven though.
We foul more, they are not great at FT% per game, we actually make more.
They have a much better scoring defense, not in the open court.
Scoring margin they are better, we are in the picture, even really.
They don't create a lot of steals, we don't either.
They are not that great at 3pt defense.
They do turn the ball over, we don't force a lot.
ILLINI push ball play inside, cause fouls, UCONN not deep, that is the Kryponite!
92% winning % to ILLINI @ 78%
If the ILLINI push the ball, in turn speeding up UCONN, and rebound well with them, shoot our normal 3pt% in this game, we will have a very good chance of winning.
If the ILLINI do not play defense with the same passion, crash the boards and get TSJ out in transition (UCONN) will have major issues here, then I am afraid our season will end. Final Four dammit, here we come!

COACH UNDERWOOD, please watch the film of ALL 3 times St Johns played UCONN this year. 3 losses by a grand total of 18 points and 13 of them was the 2nd meeting between the 2 schools.
We are WAY better than St. Johns, we match up better, we have a better offense, we CAN play better defense, obviously Pitino figured out something against them, just not all the way.
Clingan can be put in foul trouble at 7'2"
The key however it seems is keep Newton off the boards, and Castle from taking over as a freshman.
Overall UCONN is no where close to being a deep team, we can get them in foul trouble if we don't fall in love with the 3 pointer by itself.

I agree with Brad that I really like this team. It was a pretty sedentary day for me after the late game and pressers afterwards. That last night-cap didn't help this morning either. So I listened/watched a lot of local and national sports chat. It's pretty amazing that practically nobody is giving us much of a chance against U Con. I disagree and think that, if we stay loose and focused, we've got a legit shot here. For those of us in the 4th quarter, it sure would be sweet to see a champ once during our time here. I don't give a shit if it comes with an asterisk either because of our star.

I would game plan the drives still has they already have, with one exception. Once they get Cling On to engage...step/drive back a step or two draw him ever so slightly away from the rim and cut baseline against guys ball hawking. If he doesn't draw out or get caught up, then simply push back out and work set plays for 3's or Domasketball!!!

That is probably the absolute worst Illinois tourney game I have ever seen, and perhaps the worst performance I have ever seen by a team in the elite 8.
I was ok with losing this game if it was competitive. I mentally prepared myself for that. But in true Illinois fashion, they took that away from me and still managed to piss me off.

No question the in game adjustments to gameplan were questionable and lacking. Staff and team looked indecisive and tentative when the run happened.
On the other hand staff had excellent prep for ISU and won a game that easily could have went the other way, and they won first two games which is actually never easy no matter who you play.
I give staff a solid B for the tourney and an A- for the season with the development of the team to a higher level in February and March.
Hopefully this will draw continued success in portal and HS recruiting and enhanced roster construction.

Maybe we weren't going to beat them, but we got away from what we've been doing.
And played like it.
That guy is money from 3 and shot ONCE from three.
So many times I was like "ooh great pass to set up a layup FUCK that guy is too big". It was like they had muscle memory of beating 6'8 guys and could not shake it despite getting blocked OVER and OVER and OVER.
Guerrier passed up a bunch of open threes then finally took a contested one. I think Underwood must have yelled at him so then he overreacted.

Honestly I was more depressed about the Rose Bowl vs USC because I had a few more moments to be hopeful, Mendenhall ripped off a TD at the start of the 2nd half. Not scoring for what seemed like half of the 2nd half - holy shit.

30-0 is just another example of someone having a 'career' once in a lifetime game against us. Usually it is an individual in this case it was the defending National Champions.
A fan can push blame to players, a coach, etc and usually does. In this case however, it simply was the NCAA repeating buzz saw that not only we ran into but many others have and will for some time.
The blue bloods themselves are not quite all blue bloods anymore, there is one king out there now....UCONN owns that designation.

Yep. We looked sped up and uncomfortable from the tip. The threes Coleman was taking from the top of the key he always makes I could tell weren’t going in before they even left his hand because his entire rhythm was off.
Airballing layups. Missing free shots. Throwing the ball damn near over the backboard with wild shots. Going right at a guy who was taking our lunch money left and right and refusing to make adjustments.
Fought back and made it a game at half then inexplicably came out of the break with Rodgers on the floor again which allowed Clingan to clog the lane. Two minutes or so later we were cooked.
You absolutely cannot have a 6’7” guy who won’t even look at the basket running the point against a team like UConn. They didn’t even guard him unless he got inside 10’ and even when he did get to the rim I think he missed them all.
TSJ a total no-show, Castle matched up with him physically and with Clingan camping in the lane and no real motion going on for him when Clingan was out, he was fucked.
Even with all that said, the offense managed to get a TON of open looks, but we didn’t take a lot of them, and missed most of the ones we did. For as old as this team was, I wasn’t expecting them to wither under the bright lights the way they did.
Sucks, but still overperformed expectations for the season, scored a TOTTM banner, made second weekend, overperformed our seed for once in getting to an E8, and was one of the best 5-6 seasons Illinois basketball has had since the tourney expanded in 1975.
Was a fun ride this year and I’ll always wonder what could have been if we didn’t have the entire mid season TSJ debacle. If the team had continued to grow together rather than going through that train wreck, who knows what our ceiling would have been?
This run will give the program some ammo and NIL money to go out and reload. On the whole, it’s definitely a big step forward for the Underwood era and something to build on. I have thoroughly enjoyed being nationally relevant again.

Well, staff has taken a lot of grief over the way they lost, but this was only the 5th EE in 40 years, and maybe the least talented or likely group of those five to do it.
Will just chalk it up to these players and coaches got overwhelmed in the moment against a lot better team. It happens in sports at all levels.
None of the players or staff had any real deep tourney NCAA experience to draw upon. Staff will adjust better and prep better moving forward.
They developed well in late season, and beat a strong #2 seed to get there so all credit to them.
On to the rebuild/reload and hopefully we have more nice runs in the future.

The free shot shooting started collapsing against Iowa State and just continued through Saturday. The second half against Iowa State was shaky (granted made big plays at the end) and that seemed to continue into Saturday. Just odd how this all went down.

I don't blame the staff one bit against UCONN, the staff identified a glaring problem in Clingon, and tried to get him in foul trouble.
Could they have adjusted in the 2nd half and went more towards 3's earlier or back cuts/picks etc, maybe but they didn't. BU probably thought we would start getting some of the calls while initiating, we didn't and then we did shoot 3's we were cold and probably a little dejected in how the game was turning out.
FREE THROW shooting has got to improve across the board though.
Lack of experience across the board, playing defending champs (only 2 teams hadn't been beaten by more than 30-both B1G ten teams), they could have but didn't, and UCONN was just a better team. Simple, lick your wounds, relish the Elite year that was had, recruit in the portal, and start building Who got NEXT team for another run.

Illinois is now the proud owner of the longest scoring run in NCAA tournament History. :-[ Its happened a couple of times in the regular season. I think Ohio has the biggest run overall without a team scoring. 44-0. but as for the NCAA tournament in of itself. We got that now.
