I guess we can just pretend that commodity prices didn’t start tanking in the fall of 2023 and then continue downward after a big crop and huge carry over numbers in 2024. Tariffs ratcheted ip  against China in September of 2024, prices continued down, and it’s looking like a huge crop again in 2025. The supply is exceeding demand year over year over year and not even China can buy enough to offset that.

Not saying the current market chaos is helping anything, it isn’t, but it’s really reductionist to act like this just started recently. Soybean prices were under $10 last fall when Biden was in office.

From the time Biden entered office until the day he left, they increased by $2/bushel

In both Trump administrations, the overall trend was down.

So, just to kinda recap a little. The orange dude said he was right about everything and was going to fix it. I'm waiting.

Gas prices are right around where they were, prices are going up on everything and midwest farmers are fucked. But he doesn't care because his guy JD has an investment in acretrader, so when the family farms disappear, he can buy them all up. It's brilliant actually. Dupe a bunch of dipshits from Arkansas and Nebraska into voting for them, based on hating blacks and browns, and take their land. Knowing they will fall for it.

Oh well. Fuck all of those guys for being that stupid.

The Final Test?

Andrew Egger: “In a way, Donald Trump and his allies have spent their entire political lives preparing for this moment. The whole miserable decade of ‘alternative facts,’ of witch hunts, of flooding the zone with shit—it all amounted to a long, powerful education for his base. It’s a training in a certain kind of zen meditation, in which stories damaging to Trump pass from the eyes and ears directly out of the body without ever intersecting the brain. By now, the base has gotten in their 10,000 hours. They’ve become masters of the craft. They can perform all sorts of remarkable feats—the media-cope equivalent of lying on beds of nails while cinderblocks are smashed on their chests. These cinderblocks, they whisper serenely, are just a liberal plot. If I pay attention, the Democrats win.”

“This Epstein story might as well be their final test. They’ve clamored for years for more information about Epstein’s sexual-deviant associates—and here Trump is, wallowing in that muck of perversity, clear as day. Trump plainly thinks he’s got them well trained enough that he doesn’t even need to find a good cover story. They’re ready to excuse him all on their own.”

Well written but Egger misses the main point: We do not need the MAGAS to wake up.  We need some of the people in the middle and the MAGA curious.

“Jeffrey showing early talents with money + women!”, the letter reads. “Sells ‘fully depreciated’ [name redacted] to Donald Trump for $22,500.” A joke, obviously—but a joke referencing what, exactly? The “fully depreciated” woman, the Journal reports, was then in her 20s.

The question was not directed to Trump but to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who had just released the memo concluding “no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted” in the investigation.

The truth doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is owning the judges.

I agree there's lots of smoke, but I don’t know if Trump abused underage girls.  I do know he's lied repeatedly about his association with Epstein.  Which lends itself to believing he at the very least knew about Epstein's proclivities and had no problem with them.

I guess tariffs have no effect on prices. Thanks for the clarification.

I acknowledged they have effects not once but twice in my previous post. Beans were a little under $10 last October (in part because additional tariffs went into place with China in September, under Biden) which is pretty much where they’re at now. China is getting more of their beans from Brazil in part due to tariffs.

Was listening to an ag economist earlier on my drive and he talked about how we got out of the farm crisis in the 80s in large part by opening up new markets, China being a big one. But there aren’t any Chinas to go open up now and we are in a trade war with actual China. Anybody in the world that has the money to buy our products has a full belly. And the places we could open up to sell the products don’t have the money to pay for them. So we can argue all day about the effects of tariffs, but ultimately they’re just exacerbating a much larger issue. That problem being that we chronically overproduce because farmers are incentivized to do so by several mechanisms.

We basically are at an impasse now where we have to decide if we let farming become survival of the fittest and consolidate into mega farms or do we go back to some kind of a system where we take acres out of production to keep prices somewhat higher by matching production to demand?

I suspect there will be some kind of bail out or gesture of some sort made to the farming community before the end of this year. The I states aren’t in terrible shape yet but have been talking to some friends of mine that are in fringe areas and they’re thinking upwards of 30 to 40% of farmers could be on the brink of bankruptcy sooner than later.

Maybe Jobu is right and Trump is going to put them all out of business and buy their land for pennies on the dollar. We’ll see.

Trump wrote a beautiful birthday letter to his dear friend Jeffrey Epstein.

Hey Mn, you like Trump’s birthday letter to Epstein?
