Chattanooga did show the country the blueprint on handling Illinois offense.  Foul Kofi and run the 3 shooters off the line

That's not exactly news.  Illinois needs to counter with guard penetration, back door plays, transition offense, and mixing in some pressure defense.

Agree.  We do not even try to attack closeouts. Plummer and Trent sometimes.
Trent was a lot more earlier in year.

He needs to step up.

I'll defer to you, but it seems as tho most of our attacking closeouts is into a very clogged lane, because Kofi and the 3 guys defending him take up the space under the bucket.

I think we know what to do, and staff are telling them,  we are just not executing very well.
Having three or four guys with Kofi who can hit the three and have to be guarded is great but he has to pass out of doubles much quicker, and we have to hit shots.

I do think we miss Grandison being out there.  Damonte won't shoot, Curbelo can't shoot, and Trent is struggling..

Hawkins can't shoot, but he attacks the hole, runs the floor and is good offensive rebounder.

He might be key if we hang with Houston.

I wonder what status of RJ is?

Kid is a scorer and we need those options right now.

It would help if Kofi could occasionally set a screen and spot up for three instead of rolling to the hoop or posting up. We don't really have a true stretch big. Grandison? Hawkins has a nice looking set shot, but he misses consistently.

Has Kofj looked sort of sluggish since the concussion?

Yes and less explosive for sure. They said he had a bone bruise back before the Purdue game I believe. Something is def off.

Well, bottom line is we will need to hit about 10 threes to have a shot.

For the life of me, I do not understand the rotation yesterday. We absolutely sucked on offense but Brad insisted on playing 2 lead guards who played 62 minutes combined for 1-13 FG, 7 pts total. Grandison only 9 minutes, Goode and RJ 0. Trent's defense and Damonte's intangibles aren't THAT crucial against a Southern Conference offense.

A 6-man rotation with 3 scorers is not a successful recipe for success.

Watched the first half at a sports bar with some buddies. Left feeling pretty good about how we finished the half after being so awful for most of it. Then I had to go to a gala that I committed to weeks ago not knowing that the Illini would be playing.

It was in this old industrial building downtown that had been renovated into a place to hold receptions and shit like this and it never occurred to me they wouldn’t have any TVs in there.

So I was trying to socialize and also check my Score app without being rude. When it got down to around 4 to play I found a spot in a stairwell away from the crowd and watched the end of it on my phone. Not my ideal way to watch Illini tournament basketball.

So I didn’t see a lot of it but obviously saw the stats. I had people texting me and saying Plummer and Kofi saved us and Curbelo needed to be benched. 1-7 shooting, 4 assists, 6 TOs.

This is really a catch 22. I know we need what he can potentially give us when he’s right and everyone including Brad are hoping the light bulb suddenly comes on. But man 30 mins a game of this type of performance on top of Trent struggling is definitely not a recipe for a deep run.

I’d like to see more of

Trent

Plummer

Grandison/RJ/Goode

Hawkins

Kofi

on the floor at the same time.

Keep Curbelo and Williams minutes around 20.

Agree. I think Curbelo is just out of control. He was like that at times last year but shot better and had more assists so it was a net plus.
This year it is not and kills our ball and player movement.

A friend of mine heard from insiders that he had team disciplinary issues in addition to the COVID thing after he returned.

My guess is he moves on after this year. Not a good fit on this team, or the Big Ten slugfests.

After further review of the game, that was the worst performance by an Illini team in the NCAA tourney since they lost to Dayton in 1990. The gameplay in this win was worse than any actual loss they’ve suffered since 1990.

Illinois was far worse last night than the Loyola game.  If they had played a Loyola caliber team, they’d have lost by 20.

Chattanooga did show the country the blueprint on handling Illinois offense.  Foul Kofi and run the 3 shooters off the line

Still pissed about this game.  Hate when a favored team gets an undeserving win. Not that Chatt was good (they sucked too) but if you lead by 14 in 1st half, 11 in 2nd half, and for all by about 30 seconds of the game, you should win.

It was nearly a carbon copy of the Loyola game where Illinois never lead.

Imagine bitching about winning a tourney game.

Yeah.  That is some fucked up shit. Nothing is easy in the tourney.
