We shall see if this was a distraction or not. That is my concern with this.

I think nobody probably cares too much beyond the two fanbases getting riled up for a couple days. I was more pissed off before I found out Whitnit supported this twice at least.
Now- it sort of let's move on.

I think if we play UM in final of BTT or in FF it only helps us as a little more motivation.

I don’t have a problem with Whitman penning a letter. But man, show some perspective.

He was definitely behind the curve on that take

We don’t fully know what he voted for and supported or what all was discussed. Why do we automatically assume two Chicago writers citing anonymous sources have it correct over the bronze tablet former NFL attorney who actually put his name on what he wrote?

C'mon, he would have denied it because it is damning in light of his letter. Don't give me this Bronze Tablet former NFL attorney bullshit. He was Groce's buttbuddy when he should have axed him and he hired his buddy to be women's bball coach. I'm cautiously optimistic with football and am waiting to see if Underwood is no longer Underachieving. Football season tickets are still going for, what, less than $10/game? Until someone, somewhere, actually does something with a revenue producing sport (not fucking golf, tennis, or cricket), he is still Guenther, Jr.

At the end of the day, there are a million reason$ why football was treated differently. This decision regarding win % is not going to cost the B1G $$$$ like shutting tO$U out of the college football playoffs would have.

Chump edit: Actually there is a distrinction on the "peace" vs. "piece" thing, so I can't say one was right or wrong in this instance.

Huh? He kept Groce one more year rather than replacing football and basketball coaches within 6 weeks of each other as the brand new AD. And Groce seemed to be turning the corner on some program changing recruits, two of which play huge roles on this team. Another who was released from the LOI he signed with Groce and has had a nice career at Mizzou.

If he’d have fired and hired both Cubit and Groce that first 6 weeks and both had failed/were failing now I have no doubt you’d complain that the Division III Guenther Lite should have gotten his feet under him before hiring and firing both revenue sport coaches.

But most importantly, whether Groce stayed a year or 3 too long, it all seems to have worked out quite well.

I mean Whitman got the BOT-and-faculty-pleasing hiring of a gay person and a black person out of the way early. So, like Brad Underwood, all his future hires will be evaluated solely on their actual merit rather than checking a diversity box. And he should be held accountable first for giving them the tools and resources to succeed, and then their subsequent success or failure.

But my point still remains that there is no way he would publicly call out the B1G with no perspective having voted 2-3 times for winning percentage with no caveats. That would be insanely idiotic. I’ll take Whitman at his word, you can believe the anonymous sources that support your Guenther Lite theory.

Fair enough on what preceded this, except that he was brought in to clean house and many were pissed Groce was sticking.

As for this paragraph, I think you overestimate a) Division III Guenther Lite (I like that name!) and b) the Illini (and, to be fair, most teams') fan base. See, e.g., Judge Judy.

He was brought in to make our athletic programs and facilities better. Do you think as a whole we are better off now or in the fall of 2015? There are 13 other teams in the conference spending big money and trying to win too.

As to the second paragraph it’s kinda always this way. We are good once in a while. Most of the non-Chicago Illini fans embrace it for what it is and revel in the moment.  The Chicago people, being in a pro sports town, make extra sure to be cynical and throw a wet blanket on everything.

Yeah...I believe the journalists on that one.

Whitman's letter was a fine idea poorly executed. Illinois got boned, but it appears to be the rules everyone agreed to play by.

I have no clue what anyone else is doing facility wise, but I hear NU has a nice one for football and I'd be willing to bet Illinois remains in the lower third of the B1G

As for the second paragraph, ergo why the Illini never seem to get over the hurdle to be a real college program of consequence.

Why is that? One put his own name on what happened and the others cited an anonymous source. Whitman clearly alluded to caveats in the letter he wrote. The caveats were touched upon very briefly by the journalists. I think that’s kind of important.

Illinois’ new practice facility (planned and announced by Whitman and funded by Whitman’s efforts) is considered to be elite. Ranked 11 in the nation by 247 in 2020.

And are we back to blaming the fans for Illinois only being periodically good?
