Illinois renames football venue Gies Memorial Stadium after $100M gift https://share.google/mCW80fqIBE7q0Rdm4

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said the donation, which will be given over several years, will be used “to support the football program with a focus on this stadium.”

Some of the early payments will go toward planned renovations. The university announced this summer $9 million worth of upgrades, including a wireless internet system and a new sound system, video boards and LED lighting. Illinois will bring in an architectural firm to advise on how else to use the resources for a stadium that has been renovated multiple times.

Whitman called the stadium “one of the most majestic, important buildings in our state.”

Gies Memorial Stadium to see major renovations with $100M donation from Illini alum https://share.google/ujkGMqbdCa7zXgdSE

"Some of the things that we've talked about that the new video board Package, which includes not just the premier board in the south, but I think, another 17 or 18 boards spread out throughout the stadium, a new sound system, new lights. Beyond that, we've engaged an architecture firm that will help us evaluate different optionality here within the stadium," he said.

Throughout the years, some people have wanted changes to the south endzone. Such as improving the exterior and moving the seats closer to the field.

Currently, Whitman says they plan to change up the parking lots nearby to add more green space and make it more fan friendly during tailgates.

"But we'll see ultimately if, if we do some sort of dramatic renovation in the South. The question will still be determined," said Whitman.

And finally, Josh Whitman was asked if the $100 million could be used to pay and recruit football players for Bret Bielema’s program.

Whitman said, "The money is not restricted within use of the or for football or the stadium, and so Larry trusts us to use those dollars as we think is most appropriate. But sitting here today that is not the intent."

There’s a lot of pretty speech in there, but this is the meat of the whole thing:

The biggest problem right now with the NIL thing is that payments to the players are cannibalizing donations to all the other things that make the athletic program run.

Having 100 million pumped into your program, regardless of how it’s used proportionally, allows all of that money that flows in from other sources to be directed towards players and not facilities and other shit.

We shall see. But the first thing that money should be used for is better players. Who gives a damn about the stadium if the team sucks? We've seen that movie before.

Exactly. When players are being paid, the facilities thing isn't near as important.

I mean, we’re in complete agreement here. No one beats the drum louder here than me for everyone who can to donate to get better players. We are way behind the top echelon of the Big Ten on NIL dollars for football. And then people wanna bitch about the coaching staff or the fans or whatever. It’s a new era, put up or shut up. Gies put up.
