Kid in a candy srore with money in his pocket approach to GMing. That’s one way to do it, I guess. You’re free to your opinion. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong. I just wouldn’t go that route. Can we talk about the game the Bears are dominating?
No, it's the "opportunity cost" approach to GM.
Here we have two options at QB.
One is a guy with 35 starts in the NFL who has yet to show any level of consistency as a passer. He's extremely explosive with his legs, but also has bad tendencies - bad picks, turnovers at inopportune times, indecisive with the ball, fumbles too often. He very well could turn into an elite QB, but has not shown that ability thusfar through 35 starts. After next year they will likely have to give him $100m to be their QB, and also cut severely into the Bears' cap space - you've brought up Mahomes a bunch of times, but even Mahomes' play has kind of fallen off as the Chiefs have had to cut other talent because of his contract (which he definitely had proven he deserved, obviously). You like to complain about how the Bears haven't had enough talent around Fields, but when we have to pay him a big contract it will be that much more difficult to put talent around him.
The second option is an incoming rookie. There are questions about him, as there are about any NFL QB prospect - but most of them aren't "on-the-field" type questions. On the field, he's been consistently very good and if he'd been eligible a year ago, he'd have probably been the top QB taken at that time. You have him on a cheap contract for 4 years, during which you can continue to spend that extra available money to build around him. They will also likely have another pick in the top half of the first round if not higher to give him a weapon, or improve the defense. There are definitely risks involved, as there are ANY time you spend a high draft pick. The ceiling in terms of how good he can be relative to Fields is higher, but the floor is also lower. The financial/capital risk is not nearly as high as it will be to keep him and hope you can figure out the most important position next year in a make-or-break year for Fields with 9 figures on the line.
Since you were flippant about my view ("kid in a candy store with money style of GM", lol), I'll call your view the "Beanie Baby Collector style of GM". You know the thing hasn't been worth all that much thusfar, but you're holding out hope that if you just give it a little more time it'll end up being the winning lottery ticket.
