The Bears are 5 games into the rebuild. Why are they not Super Bowl contenders yet?!

It still looks like the Bear are in teardown mode.

He sucked ass at Arkansas.  He's won 3 games since November last year. He lost to Purdue, twice,  MSU, and Nebraska, three currently crap programs, in that time. He's beaten NU, Toledo, and Florida Atlantic. Not murderers' row.

Your last paragraph is what is most concerning. This is year 3. What the fuck has he been doing besides coaching up Lovie's guys? Where are his guys? Who redshirts guys anymore with the portal? Why didn't he use the portal to bring in linemen? Where is the discipline? This is Lovie Bad without Lovie's Kids as Coaches to blame. Is he going to talk to Lunney again? Lunney is going up tempo against the wind instead of ball control after the D was on the field forever? Why is he letting him do that? This has been a dumpster fire since last November.

He's lucky Eberlose has been terrible during that same timeframe.

The first 8 games of last season count the same as the last 5.

They went uptempo because the line can’t generate the push to actually run a ball control offense. The times we’ve actually moved the ball well this season were often when we went uptempo.

Redshirting still has value, the portal changes things but lots of other programs are after the same kids and there are plenty of other drawbacks to relying too heavily on the portal. Everyone is still figuring out how to build program continuity in this era, and I’m actually ok with developing preps and having a culture of continuity rather than trying to reload every year in the portal.

The first 8 games count the same as the last 5? Hmm. The problem is that the trend is not a good one and, as you noted,  lot of (Lovie's) guys from last year are gone.

The problem with up tempo is that it was not working. They got clobbered on TOP. The defense was out there way too much. Plus, generally, if the wind is an issue, you want to keep the ball as much as possible when the wind is in your face. You cannot go 3.and out with 3 incomplete passes against the wind.

Walter's Purdue Portals kicked Bielema ass last week. Purdue is lousy. Which means Illinois is even worse.

At the start, as it is Illinois and they usually suck after a 6+ win season,  I thought a 6 win season this year would mean he did a good coaching job. What we are seeing, and getting whipped by Purdue and Nebraska (the score should have been far worse), is extremely disturbing viz a viz the coaching staff and the development they are purportedly doing.

Your culture comment reminds me of when Belichick talked to Flus after the Bear Patriot game mast year....

I don’t think finishing weak last year really has anything to do with this year, given the roster and staff turnover.

This team can’t run the ball. Not sure what to tell you. The failure to put a competitive offensive line and a good running back on the field is a lot more concerning to me than the play calling with the bad players.

I actually had the flus culture thing go through my head when I was typing that, but it’s apples to oranges. There’s really no excuse to be this hapless on the field, but I don’t think he’s going anywhere, so he and Whitman better figure out a game plan going forward.
