I grew up in a small farming community southwest of Chicago in the 60s.  Many of my high school classmates went MAGA.  Several colleagues at work did the same.  Some started out in college, while others went to work in factories or the trades.  They all listened to Rush Limbaugh and/or watched Fox News nonstop.  At first, they started out focused on small government, the deficit and economic issues.  We had no problems discussing those issues; in fact, we agreed the Democrats and Republicans in Congress were moving too fast with free trade.  But things started to fall apart towards the end of Clinton's second term.  And then many went over the edge with Obama.  It was hard to hold a discussion for more than 10 minutes.  They harbored all sorts of grievances towards blacks, gays and immigrants from Mexico.  They began to view these groups and the libs as the enemy.  They didn't want to talk about ways to address their concerns; just constant complaining.  I think that’s why Trump was so successful.  He tapped into their fears and hatred, and these folks saw him as the “chosen one” who would lead them to the promisted land.  I’ve cut off all contact, particularly on Facebook.  Everyday there would be a slew of crazy posts about this or that.  Just couldn’t stomach it anymore.

Yeah. I’ve lost some FB friends over it as well. Hell, I don’t even talk to my sister anymore. She moved up to the country in Wisconsin and went wingnut.

Couldn’t have been too far from where I grew up then. I grew up on the far west side of Aurora. My family were farmers from Luxembourg and they go back 140 years or so in Aurora. At Randall and Sullivan Road is the largest Hindu Temple in America. That used to be my great uncle’s farm. My grandparents lived on that farm for 35 years or so. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and lived there briefly after my parents divorced. My childhood dog is buried under that temple.

Across the street where the Illinois Math and Science Academy is was my  great-grandfather’s farm. He and his brother farmed right next to each other. I was the last person to live in a house he built around the depression era. A house my grandmother grew up in.

This is basically a wishlist of progressive policy priorities so I can see why this would get you excited. But it’s also why some people will actively vote against him.
